Champion Type

Skirmisher, combo mage sub-class

Champion Concept

A sword-mage wielding magic skirmisher who constantly moves both herself and her mana crystal, the focus of her powers, around with her skills. While befuddling the enemy, she strikes true with her magic sword, dealing magic damage on-hit after separating from and reclaiming her crystal. However, she's squishy, her she'll need to build damage to keep laying down the hurt, and her only utility is to be found in her ultimate. Her abilities offer her the safety she needs, but overusing them, especially just to reach a target, will leave her with nothing but unempowered basic attacks to defeat her enemies with, and no way out.

Skillful Lyra players will keep enemies on their toes, poor ones will leap into the enemy team, dart around ineffectually, and then die in short order.

Short Lore

When she was a little girl, Lyra Melania Angelis learned that Demacians valued honor and valor above all else. When she was grown, she learned that honor and valor were a commodity not all could afford. The latest and final head of a once-prestigious noble family brought low by the political machinations of Demacia's highest families, Lyra has sworn to do anything to save the legacy of her family - even defect to Noxus. Taking the family relic - a sword that draws in mana to carve enemies asunder - and something new of her own invention - a crystal of pure mana that acts as both a focus and a source of power - with her, Lyra wields magic and swordplay in tandem, darting across battlefields and striking down her foes to make a name for herself. It was impossible for this heiress of a fallen family to restore the honor of the Angelis name in Demacia, but in Noxus, nothing is beyond the reach of those with the will and ability to grasp what they desire.

Gender: Female Birthplace: Demacian Capitol, Demacia Residence: Noxian Capitol, Noxus Occupation: Noxian Soldier Faction: Noxus

Friends: Darius, Katarina Rivals: Riven Enemies: Garen, Lux, Jarvan IV

Appearance

http://i.imgur.com/xGlLbd6.jpg

A fit, short-haired woman wearing a uniform that appears to be put together from bits and pieces of other articles of clothing. While moving normally, she holds her sword reverse-grip behind her back, spinning it around when she enters combat and returning it to its normal appearance when moving out of combat.

When her passive is ready, her blade glows blue, and when a 3rd empowered attack is ready, it instead glows red. Triggering her passive with a critical strike adds a splash of appropriately-colored magical energy to the impacts of her sword. Her crystal floats in her left hand as she moves around (she holds it similarly to how Ahri does with her orb) but while standing still it drifts around as if it has a mind of its own, with Lyra occasionally stopping it and beckoning it back to her.

Abilities

Innate: Arcane Armaments

Lyra carries her Crystal and her Spellblade into battle with her, each granting her a separate benefit.

Crystal Attunement: When being moved, Lyra’s Crystal stops after passing through the first enemy champion, where it will remain on the field. Lyra can pick up the Crystal by moving over it, and it will automatically snap back to her location if she moves too far away.

Spellblade Strike: Lyra gains 2 stacks of empowered auto attacks, up to a maximum of 6, for 5 seconds every time she reclaims her Crystal except through leaving its maximum leash range. Each of her basic attacks consumes a stack to deal modified magic damage with increased attack speed. Every third modified attack within 10 seconds instead triggers Spellblade Surge.

Spellblade Surge: Lyra's attack deals double Spellblade Strike's damage with the same bonus attack speed and reduces the cooldowns of her basic abilities. Spellblade Surge is treated as a critical strike for purposes of triggering item effects.

Lyra's critical strikes trigger Spellblade Strike without consuming a stack, regardless of whether or not she has any stacks stored, but are not treated as critical strikes for purposes of triggering item effects.

Spellblade Strike magic damage: [10-40, based on level] + 90% AD + 50% AP Spellblade Surge magic damage: [20-80, based on level] + 180% AD + 100% AP Bonus Attack Speed: [20/25/30/35/40 at levels 1/5/9/13/17]% Cooldown Reduction: [15/22.5/30 at levels 1/7/13]%

Q: Focal Shift

Cost: 50/55/60/65/70 mana Cast range: 700/Pulse aoe: 250 Cooldown: 9/7.75/6.5/5.25/4 seconds

Active: Lyra moves the Crystal either away from her or toward her, depending on whether or not she is holding it. The Crystal deals magic damage to enemies it passes through and, after stopping, lets out a pulse of energy after a brief delay that slows nearby enemies and deals them magic damage again. The Crystal will still emit its damaging pulse even if Lyra picks it back up first.

While holding the Crystal: Lyra throws the Crystal toward the target location.

While not holding the Crystal: Lyra pulls the Crystal back to her location.

Magic damage: 60/75/90/105/120 + 40% AP Total magic damage: 120/150/180/210/240+ 80% AP Slow: 30/35/40/45/50%

Focal Shift has no cast time and does not interrupt Lyra's previous orders.

W: Mana Absorption

Cost: 60 mana Cast range: 850/Absorption aoe: 162.5 Cooldown: 27/24/21/18/15 seconds

Passive: Lyra's basic attacks deal 10% AD bonus magic damage.

Active: Lyra generates a wall of energy around the crystal for up to 1 second that absorbs the first incoming enemy ability or instance of non-turret damage. If Lyra successfully blocks an enemy ability or instance of damage, she generates 2 stacks of Spellblade Strike and gains movement speed and becomes ghosted 1.5 seconds.

Bonus movement speed: 20/25/30/35/40%

Lyra can move, cast abilities, and attack while maintaining the wall. Mana Absorption will disable any ability that would apply its effects to an area in which the Crystal is located, whether or not Lyra is holding it.

(For example, if Malphite's ultimate has Lyra's crystal within its area of effect, he will complete his dash, but the damage and knockup from it won't be applied to any units he would have damaged. Note that this only applies in an area-by-area standard. If Vi is using her ultimate and passes through Lyra's crystal, she will not knock-aside, knock-up, or damage enemies while touching the crystal, but once she has passed the crystal's area of effect she will still apply the effects of her ultimate to other enemies she touches.)

E: Phase Slip

Cost: 40/45/50/55/60 Mana Dash range: 350 Cooldown: 18/16/14/12/10 seconds

Active: Lyra dashes, her direction depending on whether or not she is holding the Crystal. If she dashes through an enemy champion she gains a shield that absorbs incoming damage for 1.25 seconds. After .75 seconds, Lyra can reactive the ability within 4 seconds to dash a second time at no additional cost, refreshing the shield if she dashes through an enemy champion again.

While holding the Crystal: Lyra dashes a fixed distance toward the cursor, leaving the Crystal behind at her starting location.

While not holding the Crystal: Lyra dashes toward the Crystal, stopping only upon reaching the Crystal or reaching the end of her dash distance.

Shielded amount: 80/105/130/155/180 + 75% AP

R: Arcane Explosion

Cost: 100 Mana Cast range: 850 cast range/Explosion area of effect: 350/Mana Radiation area of effect: 250 Cooldown: 110/105/90 seconds

Passive: Moving the Crystal or triggering Spellblade Strike overcharges the Crystal for 5 seconds, up to 4 times.

Active: Lyra sends a surge of magical energy into the Crystal and detonates it after a .66 second delay, dealing magic damage to nearby enemies and reforming it in her possession. If the ability was activated while the Crystal was overcharged 4 times, damaged enemies absorb and begin radiating the excess magical energy for 10 seconds, causing Lyra's critical strikes against them and enemies around them to trigger Spellblade Surge without consuming stacks of Spellblade Strike.

Magic Damage: 150/250/350 + 100% AP

Long Lore:

In Demacia, families are elevated to the pinnacle of society, to the nobility, after generations of valor and service for the good of the nation. These families quickly learn to jealously guard their prestige, for it takes only one moment of weakness to see all crumble and turn to dust in the wind. For the Angelis family, that moment of weakness came when the sixth head of the family, Achillios Makarios Angelis, shamed himself and his unit for retreating in battle against a superior Noxian force.

When word got back to the crown of Achillios' actions, he was promptly executed for his "cowardice", and a shade fell over his family. Partly due to the disdain of the crown, but mostly thanks to the machinations of the other noble families, House Angelis soon saw its prestige, honor, and wealth stripped further and further away by the year, until the family was just a shadow of its former glory by the time of the death of the eighth head at a relatively young (suspiciously so) age.

The late Lord Angelis had managed to leave three offspring behind despite his youth, two strong lads and a girl, and the family affairs passed into the hands of what few aids he had until his heirs were of age.

Those two boys were dead before winter's end. Some whispered of poison, especially when the aids that were to look after them vanished, but nothing could be proven, and few were interested in searching for justice for the broken family. And of the girl? Lyra Melania Angelis was a bright child and gifted with magical arts, but she was still a girl, and nobody dreamed that a female head of the family would amount to anything. Not in Demacia. She was protected but also limited by her gender.

Having been raised by and taught the family history by her mother, Lyra grew up both enamored with the fallen glory of her heritage, and holding bitter anger for those that had stolen it before she was even born. Determined to bring her family back into its golden days, she spent every day of her childhood self-teaching herself to control her latent magic while also practicing swordplay with the last relic the family had managed to hold, a useless sword that could cut through nothing, no matter how well it was swung. The only reason the blade wasn't stolen was because it held absolutely no value to anyone - aside from sentimental value to Lyra herself.

When her mother died she immediately applied to the Demacian military, but the dimensional magic she had taught herself required such rituals that they were useless in the heat of battle, and she was forced to wield an ordinary longsword in place of the family sword she so treasured. Lyra endured her first year amongst the new blood of the military, forced to carry out the menial tasks of a common soldier. By all account she fought in small skirmishes against beasts, bandits, and occasional Noxian squads with honor, but who would notice one soldier's exploits out of thousands? Her deeds went unsung, save by the few she served with. She was forced to admit to herself that she'd never restore the family name by herself. Resentment toward the nobles that sought to destroy her family just to increase their own prospects festered within her alongside detestment for the crown that had let it happen. And eventually, she woke up in the middle of the night, drenched with sweat, and abandoned the barracks to steal back into her old home.

When she looked back on those days she wasn't exactly sure what had possessed her to do it; perhaps desperation, perhaps anger, but she locked herself in the cellar of the home of her youth, where she had spent her days practicing magic and the sword, and began experimenting with her dimensional magic once more. She worked without rest or food, determined to make some final breakthrough in her magic that might get her somewhere, and by the time a third sunset had come, a floating, glittering crystal of raw magic floated at her work station. She stared at it, enamored by her own creation, as the crystal floated closer to her like an uncertain but intrigued animal. It shuddered as she raised her hand, and flew toward it, as if drawn. Lyra flinched, knocking aside her chair, but the crystal did her no harm. Instead it cast a warm glow, a warmth that touched her heart.

But Lyra had no more time to be awed by her achieved, for she heard footsteps approaching. She remained where she was, expecting the Demacian soldiers that were no doubt coming to apprehend her for abandoning her post. Instead, a trio of robed women burst into her "lab" - Noxian women, Lyra realized in an instant. Her heart pounding, Lyra reached instinctively for the only weapon she had - her useless family sword, and swung it. It glowed with energy in her hand, and it cut through the first assailant without resistance. Lyra stopped, stunned, just long enough for the other two to grab her and restrain her with magic.

Forced to her knees, Lyra fought to free herself but privately understood that her long struggle with the family destiny was about to meet an undignified end. A fourth woman, one dressed more ornately than the other four, stepped forward and let down her hood. She introduced herself as a sister of the Black Rose, and informed Lyra that she and her assistants had been drawn by her experimentation - and that they knew of her and the history of her family.

Lyra glared silently at her at first, unwilling to listen to anything told to her by a Noxian, for the words of the Black Rose were nothing but lies, she had been told. But she found herself more and more unable to ignore the woman's words when she said that, in Noxus, Lyra would be allowed to fight with all her ferocity, and would be able to win glory for her family back. Noxus cared little for the circumstances of one's birth or their gender, she said. It was simply a question: what held Lyra's loyalty, her family, or her country?

Lyra sat there in her bindings, her heart pounding in her throat. Treason? Was that what it would come to? What if the Noxians just tortured her for information and then executed her? Everything she'd been taught growing up told her that this would be the case...

But she'd also been taught that Demacians valued honor, loyalty, and pride. She had held all three, and so did family save for Achillios in a single moment, so... why were they being made to suffer?

In a fit of desperation, Lyra agreed to the Black Rose's invitation, and stole away with the three remaining agents in the dead of the night. After a few day's travel - by night as a rule - Lyra finally found herself before the gates of the capital city, and shaking like a leaf in a windstorm. Surely the Noxians would recognize her and stone her to death before she made it even a few yards? But no such thing happened. The passing citizens merely regarded Lyra in her magical bindings (only her wrists, and only as a precaution) as a momentary curiosity before going on their way. The Black Rose sisters simply told her that people in her shoes were not so rare in Noxus, for Noxus would accept any who were willing to vow loyalty. It was simply Lyra's turn to choose the sword or the knee. When she was brought to the Noxian high command, she naturally chose the second, and was accepted with less fanfare than she would have imagined.

And that was it. Lyra sat in her room that night, stunned into sleeplessness at the events that had transpired. It had all passed more easily than she could ever have dreamed.

The Noxian military - at the behest of the Black Rose - allowed Lyra a month to further explore the capabilities of her crystal and family sword - which she dubbed a spellblade - before pressing her into battle. During that time, Lyra learned that the spellblade had interacted with the energies the crystal gave off, turning it from a useless blade to one that pierced the hardest armor like soft butter, and that the crystal itself both absorbed and bled her own magical energies like some kind of sponge that was constantly overfilling itself with water. Her dimensional magic was easily attuned to the crystal, turning it from a useless art to one that would interact with the crystal with ease, allowing her to move both it and herself with inhumane agility and speed by using the crystal as a focus for her power.

The month finally ended, and Lyra was pressed into a skirmish with Demacian forces at the head of an outnumbered Noxian squadron. In that battle, Lyra, her sword, and her crystal danced across the battlefield, striking down her former countrymen in a flurry of sorcery and swordplay. And the battle was one, and the soldiers cried her name, much to her numb surprise. That night, a small celebration was thrown in honor of her first successful sortie.

Lyra sat through it all, her eyes brimming with joyous tears and her crystal dancing around at her side.

House Angelis' restoration finally lay within her sight.

Someone's been playing Vindictus.

Skylarke11/3/2016, 2:48:16 AM2 votes

Hi, thought I'd come leave a review.

Passive: It feels nice - it's some basic synergy that works with her crystal. Main concern here is how, like Ori she has a proxy mechanic - though different from Ori is melee. This would likely affect the builds very strongly, and because of the way its built and scales would likely fall off very hard. As to the archetype and the theme, both are very spellblade-like in nature. While that's not inherently bad, what does concern me is how difficult it is to balance that class - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6AF-xCUV7Xg is a good source to read regarding it

Q: I would assume the distance that you can throw the crystal is variable, so that it's not hard-locked at 700? If it isn't then that's fine. Damage numbers feel fairly in line, and I felt that there could have been a little more creativity regarding placement of the crystal. Admittedly it might just be my 'over-complexity' senses tingling, but if there was like a chance for there to have a duration in which you could move around the crystal, well that would be quite interesting.

W: Might want to fix the wording a little bit - it implies that the AA must be triggered in order to get the bonus effect, which I feel is not what you're looking for with the W second cast. As to that the damage does feel a little bit high - with a Lich Bane you're hitting for 115% of your AP which is kinda nuts (empowered by your passive raises that to 140%) and as a result could cause there to be overwhelming damage with even moderate AP buys. It is kindof a boring ability imo - its overshadowed by the Q and E in terms of novelty.

E: The shield is actually kinda weak, and to be honest I think that the dash that is located on this ability fits the kit much better than the dash on W, which feels a bit clunky. This instead feels like something that would have real gameplay behind it, unlike the W which just feels kinda dull imo. Does she also gain the shield on the second cast though? It's not explicitly stated but I think she does not so a little clarity would be much appreciated.

R: It's functional, but boring. It's also a bit counterintuitive - why have an ability that stops you actively moving and attacking when the rest of the kit is designed to do just that? It doesn't work for me. Additionally, its very small in radius, which combined with how easy it is to play against it would mean that its not going to be very useful in the first place. It's not good for a fallback pattern either as it's too short ranged and requires standing in enemy fire if you want to successfully manage to use it - thus not doing well. It's also not very thematic at that - I would say ultimates are hard since they contribute strongly to defining a character, but there could be improvement here.

Overall I like the idea, but I think that there could be improvements made. They are relatively small since the crux of the idea is sound, but could use a little refining.

My concept: NM-8, the Shadow Strider

Candurill11/16/2016, 11:45:59 AM1 votes

Hey, Candurill here :D Thanks again for giving me feedback on Khai ^^ I'm here to return the favor. As always, please just take what you wish from my feedback. I'm no game designer or anything and I'm just speaking out of my own experience with champion creation.

First of all I'd like to point out that you made an awesome theme for you champion :O I love the part that she comes to realise that honor and valor may be held high, but deep down are only for those that can afford it. Really unique and strong sentiment there. I'd love to see more of it, though you only added the "Short Lore"...PLEASE GIVE ME MORE...Feed this forums resident Lore junky ^^ I feel like at least her growing up can be built upon...How exactly did she realise the corruptness of Demacia? What happened to her? Or what did she see? Also, why did she go to Noxus? Was it just curiosity? Did she go on a mission? Was she captured? I'd really like to see the more fleshed out version (I saw that it says short version...). Also: Add quotes, I've read good quotes from your side :D Maybe some unique interactions with demacian champions...maybe comment on the fact that all (or most at least) demacian champions in the game are either royal (Jarvan) or of noble birth (Garen, Lux, Fiora, Vayne).

I'd also really like to know how she got the crystal. It's such a big aprt of her kit, but nowhere in the lore does it say just how she got it (only that its her own invention, which then begs the question, what is her profession? A scientist? A mage?). I'd like to see some witty or interesting story about how she acquired it. Maybe it came with the family relic sword?

As for the kit:

The passive works very well with the vision you have of her just dashing and bounding through a fight. I have a hard time visualising it in game, but for as far as i can tell, its pretty balanced as it is. One quick question though: do the stacks wear off per 2? Or does the timer reset every time you get new stacks? (So you get 2 stacks and after 3 seconds you get 2 more stacks, resetting the timer for all stacks to 5 seconds). The last version would seem the best to me.

Her Q is the basis of her champion for as far as I can tell. It's her way of moving the crystal around. I do have a question though, It says here that the crystal deals damage when it moves through enemies, but in the passive it says that it will stop at the first enemy champion...Will it deal damage to that champion and stop behind it, or stop in front of it? And if it stops in front, does it deal damage?

Her W is very interesting and definitely unique. It just strikes me as not really in line with what your vision was (darting around the battlefield). Having a movable piece of terrain (essentially) seems a bit cumbersome for someone that is supposed to move around a lot, since it invokes the need to stay behind it. Maybe if the shield was like an area she can stand in, it would make more sense, allowing for last second ability evasion. I'm not going into the fairness of the ability though...I don't think I have enough knowledge of the game to accurately say anything about that. the absorption of abilities is fine, just like the generation of stacks. It makes sense.

Her E is a nice and clean dashing ability with an interesting recast element. I don't think it's in the game in any form yet, so good job :D Nothing else to say about it really ^^

Her R is essentially an old Fiora ult...Which is fine, since it isn't point and click and requires good placement of either Lyra or her crystal. It fits her well, but while reading it, I realised that Lyra's theme is VERY similar to Fiora's...(Demacian from birth, Sword fighter, stuff like that). Though I know that Lyra is more of a "Dashy stabby" kind of gall and Fiora more of a duelist, the ult seems just a tad bit too duelisty...It's good and it fits her very well, don't get me wrong, but I would have expected something more of a special ability of the crystal or an ability that would allow for more movement (not just dashing to her crystal, which she can also do with her E).

In the end I really dig what you already made so far :D ITs solid enough as a champion and only needs some clarification here and there and a more fleshed out lore. Like I said back in my own concept, I already had a look at Lyra but thought it was pretty damn good already. I did my best to try and pry some tips out of it, but it might just sound nit-picky. Still, I hope you can use this information and I wish you the best of luck in the CCOS this month :D

I was kind of disappointed when I saw where you went with the concept. Not because it's bad, you did an excellent job, but I had hyped myself up for a different idea that sounds amazing when I saw "Flashing Sword Witch". I saw that title and the first thing that came to mind is a mage that conjures magic swords which float around and her stab at enemies at a range. They could fly in all sorts of different patterns just making the entire laning phase an insane dodging game for the enemies. I don't know why but I just really loved that idea and when I saw it was just an AP Ashe + Fiora mixture, I was kind of saddened.

Feel free to check out my champion concepts! Terros, the World Breaker This one is in the CCOS>Krok, Ruler of the Skies

I remember you critiquing my yordle thief last month so I figured I'd see what the Sword-Witch was all about (even if it's late in the game.)

The Passive: Has a lot going on, effectively being two passives with one of them having an empowered effect once it's condition is met. Still, I actually really like the way you're centering her abilities around her Crystal.

The Q: I like this a lot. Some might accuse you of ripping off Orianna or Shen, but honestly I think this is different enough to warrant its existence.

The W: I think this is a very interesting take on a spell-shield type of ability, one we haven't seen before. i do think that the cooldown is way to high for the super short 1s duration that the 'wall' lasts.

The E: It's interesting that this spells targeting changes based on whether or not she's holding the Crystal. I'm not sure any ability in the game does that. It goes from being a ground-targeted dash to an automatic dash toward her Crystal. Good use of this ability alone would distinguish master Lyra players from noobs. Dashing twice seems really strong, and I wonder what the rational behind it is (as opposed to having a single dash on a shorter cooldown.)

The R: An AoE magic damage spell that can be empowered if certain conditions are met. Not super exciting IMO but it works. IDK how necessary the empowered effect is but it does support her AP / Crit affinity.

I think her kit sounds pretty fun and frantic. Kinda like a mix between Yasuo and Orianna. I'm less sold on her theme and character art. I wonder what her silhouette and model would look like and whether she'd stand out amongst the gals like Fiora and Kat. I like how you're trying to merge AP and Crit, it's a combo I'd love to see done.

I kinda feel like her title is misleading and some of her ability names could be better. 'Phase Slip' in particular comes a little too close to Ekko's 'Phase Dive'. 'Mana Absorption' might make sense, but it doesn't actually deal with mana which, again, is potentially misleading. 'Arcane Explosion' is kinda generic. I really think that as would-be designers we should try to make our champs' title and ability names (and ideally their ability icons) as cohesive as we can. I'm not concerned about numbers or ratios because those can be changed to whatever feels fair and balanced.

I'm also curious about her Crystal. Why does a 'sword witch' have anything to do with crystals? IDK but I haven't read her lore because it's 3 AM and I'm dead.

It's probably too late for you to change anything but I think this is pretty good, her having 100% AP scaling on her ult isn't though. You should lower that down a bit, otherwise I think this is a solid design. Her passive is fairly overloaded, and her crits are too, but overall it seems okay.

Regarding her ult "Active: Lyra channels for .75 seconds and, upon completion, blinks to her crystal if she is not carrying it, and then" what happens if she IS carrying it? different effect or just no blink?
