@RiotKateyKhaos: Why does Ahri only get cutesy skins?

Don't get me wrong, skins like Arcade, Academy, and Popstar are pretty neat and fun to see, but I feel like you guys are seriously missing out on some cool angles with Ahri's skin lineup. The creatures she's based on are notable for being completely f***ing vicious and evil if crossed, and with her backstory and presentation in Stray Fox (where she goes from not wanting to kill people to being willing to viciously and remorselessly kill people that endanger her or her countrymen) there's a lot of room for you guys to explore darker skin concepts for Ahri, like ones that present her as more of a demonic fox specter, kinda like what Elsword does with Eun and her host Ara.

That's probably a stereotype that Riot want to sustain, rather than squash. It's no secret sex sells, and the reason why Ahri has gained a lot of cutesy/sexy skins in recent years (and why most of her darker/more serious skins are older) is most likely because the cute skins sell well even outside of Ahri mains.

I mean yeah, let's say we have an Evil Ahri skin that makes her appear menacing. Not ugly at all, but less alluring than a cutesy skin. Ahri mains would probably buy it, but I can't imagine a lot of people outside that group would.

Now compare that to something cutesy like a Pool Party Ahri skin. That shit would sell like hotcakes if you mained Ahri or not. Because there's a "sexually liberated" woman in skimpy clothing making seductive comments.

You tell me, which of those two skin ideas would Riot (who I remind you likes money) make when they have the choice? The one that will sell more. The sexy skin.

As long as cutesy Ahri skins sell really, really well, Riot is going to continue making them. Both to the detriment of Ahri (the skins often portray her as slutty) and to other champs that could have used a skin more (Ahri has a whole closet of outfits at this point, while some champs only have one or two skins total).

Look at this way: At least your champ is getting skins. Yes, they may be cutesy, and yes they may portray her in a less than celibate way, but at least you get something.

There are mains of champs that just don't get skins. Not because Riot put them on the "Do not make skin for" list because they have outdated rigs or something, but because there's just not enough money made by the mains that buy them. Taric skins don't seem to sell well. Ryze skins don't seem to sell well. Fiddle probably doesn't sell well, or Heimerdinger. Rek'sai might have some fans left. TF maybe could break even. Skarner might not even exist as a champion anymore, let alone have skins designed for him. (Been a while since I've seen the guy) Remember when Sivir was important during the Shurima event? Well, that died out quickly.

Be thankful for what you got as an Ahri main, because some of us don't even get that much attention from the skins team for our main.

They came to be pretty similar way, only difference that Zyra directly put herself into the human body but Ahri got it pretty much by an accident. It's also why people asked Rioters about their relationship to each other and while I don't exactly remember what Ahri thought, I'd guess she wouldn't want to take Zyra's soul because she respected her for her similar origin, but for Zyra

I wouldn't call Zyra a remorseless killer, although she practically is. But it's too easy to judge someone who did never actually live in society and in fact had no brain before. It's not her fault she did not ever even think about it, it's just natural for her to test (and taste) her newly discovered environment since she couldn't see nor move before. Her new body floods her with new things which were very far behind her comprehendion. I might actually make a post here about how actually deep her character is...

Anyway, it is all up to if Ahri ever thought about this, but according to what Rioters said about her potential relationship to Zyra, she would, because she knows what it is to be a "lower life form" (I hope it doesn't sound offensive, it's not supposed to).

That's a fair point. She's essentially still in Ahri's earlier stages from before Ahri became human enough to develop a sense of morality. In fact she's probably even worse off since she was a plant and not an animal.

The problem is that they specifically chose Korean's variant of Nine Tail Fox myth, who is entirely about wandering around in the forest seducing unsuspecting victims (usually little boys if I'm not wrong) with their appearances and consuming them or just their vital organs, while Chinese version and the Japanese variant involve far more dynamics and shades than just that; which they for some reason avoided to use when she was still on the drawing board.

In the Chinese and Japanese folklores, fox spirits could be either male, female or gender-neutral; their general alignment could be either good, evil or neutral; and they enjoy the statuses from random mindless monsters, to intelligent entities that live among humans or their own, and all the way up to become local deities of some sort. That would make for far better material to work skins with.

Unfortunately they went with the most appearance dependent and sexually oriented version of the fox spirit myth, and the result is well, Ahri and her mostly cutesy or beauty focused skins.

It really upsets me that they chose the Kumiho variant rather than the Kitsune variant. I feel like it was only because of the relevance of Korea in League.

That's a fair point, but the latter 3 are her earliest skins and the first is more just a skin with a darker primary color than anything else.

Yeah they are her original skins really but still they weren't made cutesy. Just some of her newer ones are. Could use darker skins like them again though.

its moreso about the appeal of a dark fantasy rather than a dark color theme. If Ahri had a vicious evil skin I'd be more inclined to try her out instead of the skins she has now that just seem like mostly fanservice

most of Ahri's skins are meant to show how beautiful she is (Arcade, Popstar and Academy are some examples) since Ahri is a Kitsune (based on the Korean myth)

also Challenger kind of fits the theme of "darker side"

And I'm not sure Challenger necessarily counts. Sure it has darker color schemes, but that's about it.
