Athanasia - the Spell Chronicler

** Champion Type**

Mage/Support

** Champion Concept **

Athanasia is meant as a versatile mage who chains combinations of smaller spells rather than bursting targets down with a single strong spell, while increasing her damage without the need for items. Aside from just causing damage, her spells are meant to assist in zoning and weakening targets, allowing her allies to finish them.

Thematically, I wanted to make a play on the classic image of a master mage. Instead of a hunched whitebeard Athanasia is an eternally-young sorceress who tries to behave as if she's older than she looks. Instead of casting spells of awesome ruin she casts many small spells at once. Visually this would be represented multiple runes appearing near the sight of her spells, and in her magics themselves appearing more as interwoven layers of different spells working in concert.

** Lore **

There are many mages in Runeterra who achieved fame through great magical power or through developing potent spells, but nobody ever became famous by becoming a living magical library. Not until Athanasia.

The youngest of eight daughters born to an ancient and famous family of mages, Athanasia became something of a disappointment when she demonstrated little innate magical skill. Any other individual might have been stymied by their lack of inborn talent, but Athanasia's drive to succeed was merely bolstered by it. Where she lacked natural ability, she had ambition, and she decided at a young age that she would learn every spell that she could. She would replace quality for quantity.

However, the life of a single person is far too short to learn every spell known to man, so one of Athanasia's first undertakings was to find the means to give herself the time to accomplish her goal - no matter how long it should take. How she managed it is a secret she will never divulge, but Athanasia somehow cut herself off from time while still a little girl, giving her all the time she would ever need. How long she spent in tireless study is a secret to all, but what is known is that the fruits of her research has been chronicled in a single massive grimoire that seems to have a mind of its own, and follows Athanasia wherever she goes.

Athanasia's grimoire is a treasure to modern mages, but she comes and goes like the wind, and her movements are hard to track. She goes, always, to where there is the most for her to learn.

Abilities

Passive: Eternal Learning

Once every 3 seconds, whenever Athanasia or an ally champion kills an enemy within 1200 units of her location, she gains 1 spellpage (2 for large monster, large minion or champion kills). The killed enemy must be visible to Athanasia.

Notes: The 1200 units is how far a champion can see in the fog of war, which means she has to observe the kill with her own allies. It's the enemy has to be within 1200 units of her. It doesn't matter where the ally making the kill is.

Note: After casting her basic spells, Athanasia "turns the page" of her spellbook, bestowing her a passive effect for a brief period afterward. While her passives are ready, she's enshrouded in an aura of fire, ice, or lightning. The passives of her skills rank up alongside her ultimate.

Q: Spells of Flame

Cost: 80/90/100/110/120 Mana Cooldown: 14/13/12/11/10 seconds Range: 800 Active: After a 1 second delay, Athanasia unleashes a line of fire in a line ahead of her, dealing (80 / 120 / 160 / 180 / 240 + (.8 AP)) magic damage to all enemies inside and reducing their Magic Resistance by (.10 spellpages) for 3 seconds. Passive: For the next 1.5 seconds, Athanasia's next basic attack will deal an additional (20 / 30 / 40 / 50 + (+.10 AP)(.40 spellpages) magic damage.

W: Enchantments of Frost

Cost: 90 Mana Cooldown: 15/14/13/12/11 seconds Range: 900 Active: After a 1 second delay, a chunk of ice drops from the sky and strikes the ground in a 250 radius circle, dealing (60/90/120/150/180 + (.6 AP)) magic damage and snaring them for (1 + (.01 spellpages)) seconds. If the victim was under any slowing effects, the previous slowing effect is refreshed once the snare ends. Passive: For the next 1.5 seconds, Athanasia's next spell will refund (6/10/14/18 + (.10 spellpages))% (max 50%) of its mana cost after completion.

(Note: As you can see, even with tiny page scaling this thing could snare for a RIDICULOUS length of time late game. If we take the suggest 150 at 20 minutes or 300 at 35, that leaves us potentially with a 3 or 5 second snare.)

E: Magics of Fulmination

Cost: 70/80/90/100/110 Mana Cooldown: 12 seconds Range: 900 Active: Athanasia fires a bolt of lightning in a line, inflicting (70/100/130/160/190 + (.4 AP)) magic damage to the first enemy hit and slowing their movement speed by 30% for (1 + (.01 spellpages)) seconds. In addition, a small burst of lightning will erupt after 1 second at the spot where the bolt of lightning struck, dealing the initial damage again to any enemy standing with a 100 radius circle. Passive: Athanasia's movement speed is increased by (5/7/9/11 + (.05 spellpages))% (max 25%), decaying over 1.5 seconds.

** R: Grand Arcanum**

Cost: 100/120/140 Cooldown: 90/75/60 seconds Range: 450 Active Athanasia creates a great runic circle around herself for (9/12/15) seconds. Allies within the circle gain the effects of Athanasia's three passives, once every 4.5 seconds.

(Note: As Athanasia's allies do not have spellpages, her ultimate will apply scaling equal to half of hers for them)

Really cool idea, I'd buy her

Greeting, The concept is good but she scale too fast too well. She can build full tank and deal a ton of damage. The W have to much range for a rooting version of name bubble. If we think of the late game her stack should reach easily 300 to 400 page at 35 min. Her Q offer a sheen effect which does hit harder than Sona passive which is considered a very good poke already. The ult that grant a sheen effect without cd for free is too strong. She is too overtune for now. Anyway good Q and E concept. PS: To not reward AP build just make ppl build tanky and stack magic pen. Her CD is also quite short for the damage she deals especially the E that deal double damage and combo with he W. Afterthought: good concept, overtuned but keep it up.

I'll change her Q to only be base AD, would that be better?

Her E only deals double damage if you can't move. The range is really short, you would have to hit them while they're already under a CC to land the second part.

Greetings,

Based AD would be much better (still need test to check up how it goes since AA steroid should turn around Janna shield, Nami steroid, or lulu pixy to not be too overbearing^^) The E range isn't really short. 925 is further than any AA range. Twitch with ratatata has a 850 range and Tristana level 18 has 703. Moreover, being a skill shot missile type, you do not have to hit the center of the hitbox to connect. Ryze Overload is a short range spell 675 if I remember well. There is a great article on Range on lol wiki that you can check for number.

Anyway long story short she does scale too well for being passive. Think about thresh passive who put the player at risk for collecting soul or even Veigar last hit doesn't ramp up as fast (due to the CD and he has to last hit not just sit back).

PS: I haven't mention the other utilities she brings in addition of her being a support scaling at least as hard as a mage. ** Afterthought :** It is a good concept don't take it wrong but she is still very overtuned. Try to keep in mind that the more utility you bring , the less damage you deal EG: Syndra or Zilean they are equipped with a lot of utility but doesn't have the same damage as lissandra or ahri for example. The CD are also too short for those number and promoting a passive play style with her passive decrease the interactivity between champion (low risk high reward). I hope it helps.

Okay, thank you! I'll think it over and have another look at her numbers :)

Dragon Skylight2 votes

I think you under tuned her support aspect this time lol.

She mostly scale on page and her ap ratio are weak. I imagine her spike around 35 min which is an average for late game champion.

Calculation for an overall passive idea Now lets see if she lane non stop without shopping (ideal but impossible situation) her max page would be from 33 min 30 sec ( laning time). A wave spawn every 30 sec which result in 67 waves of 6 minions (3 casters and 3 melee) add to it 1 canon every 3 waves the result is 424 minions. This number would be impossible to reach in real game due to harass shopping time team fight ect... A very good player manage to last hit 95% of the time but if he get harass the number can drop around 75-80%. Which gives around **320 minions **at 75% hit rate. I simplified the real calculation to get an overall estimation.

I believe the average player (Midlane) should hit around 150-200 pages from it.(Taking into account some double page and possible jungle farm and push)

Now why I believe she is is too weak to compete against other midlaner: -All of her abilities have medium CD the shortest with max CD (40%) are Q and E with 6 sec

  • Her ultimate isn't super strong to kill anyone and is more support oriented
  • She doesn't snowball as easily as other champion since you rely more on collecting page than being able to punish enemy. Worse case scenario Athanasia become Tankier. -Her utility are not as game changing than Zilean or Lissandra.

Overview: Reducing the page stacking speed was a good choice. I thought to understand she was a fast casting mage with plenty light spell. To balance it you just have to decrease the damage/effect of the spell to decrease the cd accordingly. As a medium range mage she shouldn't be rewarded to build exclusively tank (playing with the AP ratio and Page scaling should allow that eg: low base (+0.7AP)(+0.8 pages). Keep in mind that utility mages tend to have their utility boosted by AP. Also other flaw is that her ult movement speed is too stong if it last longer than Sivir ult. 500 range for the ult is also I believe enough so it force a positioning and does not affect the ADC+ the tank at the same time if fight breaks else it is too strong for 15 sec. For example Taric ultimate last 10 sec (weaker boost) while sivir last 6 sec (and it is just the movement).

Suggestion: According to the champion concept, I see her as a supportive fast medium ranged casting champion squishy. A bit like Ryze casting speed but with weaker tankiness and mostly soft CC. To do so I ll try to make her spell with 40% CD turn around 2-3 sec. You could make her AP scale with her utility and make them strong with a lot of it and have low base which result support deal as much dmg than the mid but the CC is weak. By doing so you can make that the ally CS also grant her a page. She will have the damage to be relevant but crappy CC.

I think you under tuned her support aspect this time lol.

I did some of what you suggested. I kept her cooldown on her Q the same but I buffed the damage, dropped the cooldowns and damage of her W and E. I also nerfed her spellpage ratios and upped her AP ratios.

Dragon Skylight2 votes

Looking at the number it just feel like you randomly put them lol. Anyway, why not just put normal AP ratio on the damage to make it like a classic mage and make her utility scale with her page.EG:

**Once every 3 seconds, whenever Athanasia or an ally champion kills an enemy within 1200 units of her location, she gains 1 spellpage (2 for large monster, large minion or champion kills). The killed enemy must be visible to Athanasia. **(I restored the passive effect of it since it will not be as overbearing damage wise and allow player to play her as the first late game scaling support)

Notes: the cooldown assures she and her allies can't just cheese her getting dozens of pages by AOE killing minions. The 1200 units is how far a champion can see in the fog of war, which means she has to observe the kill with her own allies.

Cost: 80/90/100/110/120 Mana Cooldown: 14/13/12/11/10 seconds (18 sec for first rank is way to long since it isn't an escaping tool ) Range: 800 Active: After a 1 second delay, Athanasia unleashes a line of fire in a line ahead of her, dealing (80 / 120 / 160 / 180 / 240 + (.8 AP) magic damage to all enemies inside and reducing their Magic Resistance by (10% of page) for 3 seconds. It becomes a normal AP spell which shred up to 30 MR Late game meaning she doesn't need her team to build Magic pen Passive: For the next 1.5 seconds, Athanasia's next basic attack will deal an additional (20 / 30 / 40 / 50 + (+.10AP)(40% of page) magic damage. lower base but keep in mind at 35 min she may reach 300 stack leading to a bonus of 200 magic damage

**Overview: Buffing her AP base leads player to intuitively wanting to stack AP and going toward a mage direction but her natural stacking ability power allow her utility to always be strong making her always useful either as a main mage or a support charater **

I believe the concept is good. The number are a bit up to me but it's not that bad. Morgana root 3 sec is considered a lot so aiming it for 35 min is good. BTW the ultimate is somewhat too powerful. great overall idea tho

Thank you, I'll rework the numbers on her ult later :)

Raxistaicho1 votes

Okay, I've thought it over and made a few more changes to numbers :)

Raxistaicho1 votes

As you suggested, I increased the cooldowns of all her skills, nerfed the range of her W and E, and reworked her passive. Now she can only gain a page once every 3 seconds, and she herself has to make the kill. In the bot lane this should make her have to choose between occasionally grabbing a cs or focus more on building utility. In general she'll need some more AP building to meet her prior damage.

I've also reworked her Q passive to make it closer in numbers to Nami's own steroid. Keep in mind hers is good for 3 shots and also slows. I still have it scale with AD, mostly because I have to keep her ultimate in mind and that not everyone in the team will build AP.

How does she look now?
