[Champion Concept] Samuels and Estabaan, Host of the Shadow

Lore: "Estabaan, where are we now?" "Don't worry Samuels, this will only take a minute"

Bodies. Estabaan surveyed his handiwork neutrally, lifeless black sockets shifting slightly as his gaze turned to and fro. The blood of these unwary travelers and adventures stained his beautiful grey stone walls, painting them a brilliant crimson. With a swipe of his hand the shadows had devoured it all, leaving no trace of the carnage that had transpired only minutes earlier. All that was left was him.

Broken. Almost lifeless. A long, jagged wound ran the length of the man's armored chest, a black mist-like substance leaking from it. It snaked it's way across the floor to form Estabaan's feet, his arms, his head. His entire being.

Estabaan hated being dependent on something as weak as a mortal to subsist. But such was the nature of the Shadow; he was ancient and strong, just as strong as the next self proclaimed "God" on Runeterra. Such strength, however, came at a price; he needed a host, one that could handle the burden of the Shadow and ignore the whispers of the darkness.

Samuels was just the mortal.

He'd started off as an adventurer; strong, brave, and handy with that Halberd he carried around. But Estabaan had fixed all of that; now he bent to the Shadow's every beck and whim, obeying every command Estabaan gave him. For too long had Estabaan lurked in the darkest corners of Valoran, waiting for an opportunity to emerge with a host and garner a foothold. The only foothold to be gained, however, was in the Institute of War. And Estabaan planned on gaining a very good foothold.

"Samuels my boy." "...Estabaan?" "Can you stand?" "Yes Estabaan." Samuels got to his feet, face expressionless behind the wrought iron mask he wore. "Are you ready to go on another adventure my dear Samuels?" "Sure, Estabaan."

All of the shadow in the room was sucked into Samuels as sunlight streamed in through the open window. Armor clanking, Samuels hoisted his royal halberd and began to walk. He didn't know where; Estabaan was the one who did all the thinking. But it was better that way.

Name: Samuels and Estabaan Title: Host of the Shadow

Role: Fighter (Primary)/ Tank (Secondary)/ Mage (Optional) Type: Melee

Health: 526 (+83.4 per level) Health Regen: 8.162 (+0.675 per level) per 5 Mana: 320 (+30.37 per level) Mana Regen: 6.93 (+0.492 per level) per 5 Attack Damage: 57 (+3.5 per level) Attack Speed: 0.649 (+1.36% per level) Movement Speed: 370 Armor: 20 (+1.47 per level) Magic Resist: 25 (+0.64 per level)

Abilities:

Samuels [Passive] - Lingering Shadow: A giant shadow creature lurking out of your back is sure to cause some unrest in whoever you're fighting. Enemies standing within 500 units of Samuels begin to rapidly aquire stacks of Gathering Dusk every second they remain in range. Stacks fall off quickly 3 seconds after they leave the area. The ammount of stacks gained is 25, 35, 45 per second, and once an enemy reaches 100 stacks they become immobilized for 1, 1.5, 2 seconds out of sheer terror. At this time, Samuels' next attack against them within 5 seconds becomes a 650 unit range smack that deals 20% bonus damage plus 3-9% of their missing health. This effect can be triggered on minions.

Estabaan [Passive] - Paralyzing Fear: The first autoattack or spell cast Estabaan makes that deals damage to an enemy will fear them for 1, 1.5, 2 seconds. This effect cannot occur on the same enemy champion more than once every 6 seconds. For minions and neutral monsters, the duration is doubled but the effect can only be triggered once.

Mana Cost: None Cooldown: None

Samuels [Q] - Writhe: Samuels gathers shadowy energy for 0.75 seconds before unleashing a mass of dark tentacles towards the target location. Enemy minions and neutral monsters hit will be knocked back 100 units and take 45, 60, 75, 90, 105 (+80% of AP) magic damage, and the tentacles will pierce to hit anything in their area. If the tentacles encounter an enemy champion, Samuels pauses for another 0.75 seconds whilst the tentacles ensnare the champion, halting the skillshot and rooting them for 2 seconds. The champion hit takes 60, 80, 100, 120, 140(+50% of AP) magic damage and has their resistances lowered by 30% for 3 seconds afterwards.

Estabaan [Q] - Pulse: Estabaan slams his fists into the ground, sending out a shockwave that damages all enemies it comes into contact with and marks ground. Every 1 second afterwards, one randomly marked area (in a ring formation) will erupt outwards with shadow energy. The shockwave deals 70, 80, 90, 120, 150 (+50% of AD) physical damage whilst the eruptions deal half of that in magic damage and knock enemies up. Enemies hit by multiple eruptions will only be knocked up once, but take all instances of damage.

Mana Cost: 50, 55, 60, 65, 70 Cooldown: 16, 14, 12, 10, 8

Samuels [W] - Hardened Blood: Whenever Sam is hit by a physical attack, his blood fuses with shadow and makes his skin hard to penetrate. Naturally, Samuels shrugs off 5, 7, 9, 11, 14% of the damage from physical attacks and spells. When activated, he moves 14, 18, 22, 26, 30% faster for 4 seconds and begins to regenerate health equal to 12, 15, 18, 21, 24% (+1% for every 200 AP) of his missing health over that time.

Estabaan [W] - **Estabaan passively generates a 5, 10, 15, 20, 25% chance to halve all forms of damage done to him. When activated, he gains 20, 25, 30, 35, 40% increased armor and magic resist for 5 seconds, but disables the passive.

Mana Cost: 70, 75, 80, 85, 90 Cooldown: 30, 28, 26, 24, 22

Samuels [E] - Shadow Sickness: Samuels targets an enemy champion or large neutral monster, beginning to siphon away their shadow over a 3 second duration. Samuels can move an attack while he channels. The target enemy is dealt 40, 75, 85, 120, 130 (+15% of AP) magic damage every second they stay in range, and if they stay in range for the full duration or leave it after 2 seconds then they become slowed by 99% for 0.5 seconds. The slow, at that point, will begin to rapidly decay at a pace of 35, 33, 30, 27, 25% every 0.5 seconds after that. However, enemies will be left with the Shadow Sickness debuff, which reduces their ability to regain health in any way by 13, 17, 21, 25, 29% for 8 seconds. Any health they regain whilst this debuff is active will also heal Samuels.

Estabaan [E] - Overwhelm: Estabaan leaps onto the target champion, rendering him and his target untargetable for 1.25 seconds. Over a 3 second duration, starting when he lands on the champion, Estabaan suppresses his target and deals 35, 45, 55, 65, 80 (+20% of AD) physical damage every second. If the target dies whilst Overwhelmed, Estabaan restores 20% of his missing health and the cooldown of Overwhelm is reduced to 2. Champions with over 50, 65, 80, 95, 110 armor generate a 50% chance to avoid being suppressed, but still take damage for 4 seconds. Each hit applies on-hit affects.

Mana Cost: 70 (at all ranks) Cooldown: 18, 17, 16, 15, 14

[R] - The Shadow Reborn: (Passive) Estabaan adds some of his otherworldy power to Samuels' attacks, granting him 50, 100, 150 bonus range to his autos and an 8, 16, 24% increase to all damage he deals.

(Active) Samuels becomes untargetable, plunging his halbred through his own chest and rapidly loosing health. The health lost per second is equal to 13, 25, 34% of his maximum health, so dependant on how much health Samuels has left the channel duration may be longer or shorter. Once Samuels reaches 0 health, Estabaan breaks free of his body and unleashes his true form, regaining full health. Estabaan has 20, 30, 40% increased armor, magic resist, and tenacity, and grants a new skill set. Due to his waning power, however, Estabaan can only stay in his true form for a maximum of 15, 30, 45 seconds. Once this timer is up or he perishes in combat, Samuels is resurrected from the remains. If the timer runs out, Samuels is revived with the same ammount of health he had before casting his ultimate. If Estabaan dies, then Samuels loses 33% of his damage and defensive stats for the next 10 seconds, including movement and attack speed.

Health Cost: 100% of max health Cooldown: 90, 75, 60

Samuels was a knight...once. His gleaming armor has been dulled and greyed by time. Some tattered shawl that might have once depicted the city-state he fought for hangs off of his back, faded and tattered. By appearance alone he almost looks Demacian, but his memory is so clouded he can remember nothing before Estabaan. Due to going without sleep for days, Samuels often has bags under his eyes that stand out against his pale skin. But many do not see his face; he wears an iron mask that Estabaan forged from darkness to conceal his identity. A long, jagged wound runs down a large portion of Samuels' body from which darkness seeps. Estabaan can clearly be seen emerging from this wound to float over his back.

Estebaan is a name that many have lost to time. Once he terrorized the land as many names throughout history, but in recent times The Shadow has been patiently biding his time, awaiting the next host strong enough to handle his power. When not leeching Samuels' strength, Estabaan takes the shape of a humanoid without a discernible face or body; his lower half is comprised of the shadow leaking forth from Samuels. In his true form, Estabaan assumes a very bestial and monster-esq form and is able to manipulate his power to a certain extent. Liquid shadow drips off of him and disappears as it touches the ground in this form, and it floats off of him like smoke whilst he is humanoid.

Death Animation

Samuels falls to the ground, halberd slamming into it, and curls up into a ball slowly as Estabaan leaks from his body, head shaking.

>(Sweeper Upgrade) "Now they won't be able to sneak up on me!" "Or me."

>(Deploying Totem) "I think we need a new perspective on the situation."

Playstyle

Samuels should be played as a top-lane or jungle bruiser who excels at locking an enemy down and keeping them within his range as he kills them. His core build consists of items that give both health and damage, like item 3071 and item 3078, with items like item 3072, item 3143, item 3800, and item 3153 being just a few extra situational items. Overall, players looking to play Samuels and Estabaan should focus on a tank-oriented build to maximize the potential of summoning Estabaan in the middle of a team-fight.

Once you hit 6, it becomes easy to 1v1, and even 2v1, opponents who are at or below your build-level. However, since Estabaan cannot be summoned whilst Samuels is under CC, a good strategy to beat him would be to time crowd control abilities for when Samuels is low health and easily killed. If you are able to summon Estabaan, then you have 15 seconds to fight your assailants or make a hasty escape before Samuels will be re-summoned with the health you had before ult-ing.

**Author's Note: **

Thanks for reading guys. This idea has been a WIP for about 2 months now, and I finally got the splash of inspiration I needed (Thanks CCOS Contest!) to finish Samuels and Estabaan. Feel free to give some feedback or critique; either is much appreciated. Best of luck to you all on the Fields of Justice, and as always; Stay Frosty.

Hi there! I saw your champion in the CCOS and decided to take a look since they sounded interesting. I have some feedback for you about them and I hope you find it helpful. I can certainly appreciate the aesthetic thematic, as it reminds me very strongly of Kindred mixed with Malzahar or Varus. That said, in terms of the kit...

The passive is a little busy, but that isn't the main concern I have. The biggest concern is with Samuels's portion, which has a 500 range on an otherwise melee champion and ends up, as you said this champion would either be a top or jungle, punishing their enemies for the crime of... playing the game. There is no meaningful way to avoid the immobilize beyond staying away, so far away, in fact, that Samuels and Estabaan get to free farm in top lane or else their opponent risks getting bashed with Caitlin ranged empowered autoattacks. I certainly hope they are fighting Quinn or else there is no hope for top lane whatsoever.

Estabaan's passive reminds me of Nautilus's, in that they both apply a crowd control on hit with auto attacks and there is a mercy invincibility period. Notably, however, Nautilus's cc is an immobilize and has its cooldown scale by level (from 9 to 6 seconds) to help balance it. Estabaan not only has a vastly stronger crowd control, as fear removes all control over the champion briefly and makes them run away, but the cooldown is a flat 6 seconds at all ranks. Estabaan can also trigger this effect on his spells, not just his autoattacks.

So I suppose what I'm trying to say is that you may wish to rethink this passive as a whole in terms of both power budget and comparative analysis to other, similar champions who do what you want yours to do.

Samuels's portion of the Q is, in a word, horrifying. It pierces through minion waves, pushes them back, does tons of damage, and, if it hits an enemy champion, roots them for 2 seconds, deals a bit of damage, and then reduces both their resistances by 30%. Let me say that again: Thirty percent. That is not only absolutely unprecidented, but you have successfully eliminated a potential counterplay element in making this spell penetrate minion waves. Samuels rips tanks apart and enables anybody on his team to do the same, at level one. One. At level one he can do uproarious amounts of damage and then punish you for trying to play the game. I'm not sure what to say.

Estabaan's portion of the Q is... okay I guess? There is no precidence for completely random abilities and riot tends to dislike them as a whole, since they're both unreliable, can't reward players for good plays or punish for bad ones, and have no counterplay to speak of, but it isn't terribly good or bad besides that. However, doing mixed damage just seems a little weird and you probably should stick to one damage type - doing both means you can't be walled by anyone and that leads to balance problems.

Samuels's W is... a bit much. The way it's worded, he gains up to 14% damage reduction from everything. Now, if this is just physical attacks and spells that do physical damage (e.g. Zed, Yasuo, Caitlin's Piltover Peacemaker), then that's slightly better for a passive and would be fine as-is. With the active, however, he becomes a rampaging god of war that makes Sion green with envy and I'm not really sure why. Your kit already roots people two different ways, so there doesn't seem to be a need for this beyond making doubly sure everything dies and you absolutely do not. You could put something more interesting here than a block of stats.

Estabaan's W is literally Sion's old shield from before his rework, but better in every way. Rather than randomly gaining health, Estabaan just flatout has a chance to half damage. Again, random chance is generally frowned upon except under very controlled and specific circumstances because it doesn't lead to intuitive gameplay. Nobody can actually learn how to fight your champion if they have a flat 25% chance to just fail. On top of this already powerful ability, the active lets him gain a hilariously large amount of armor and magic resistance. At once. You know, I looked up champions who got a similar active (or had it as a passive ability instead). You know who gets anything similar? Garen, who gains 0.25 bonus armor and mr per enemy unit kill up to a max of 30; Reworked Poppy, who gains +15% armor and mr normally and +30% when below 40% maximum hp; Malphite, who gains up to 35% Armor as a passive of his W; and Alister, who gains up to 70% damage reduction for himself only in an active lasting 7 seconds.

As I said earlier, you may want to rethink this in light of contemporary champions and ability to play against this champion.

Samuels's E is, in part, an interesting concept and take on Grevious Wounds. I like that Samuels can heal off of attempts to heal the targeted champion if he gets the attack off and it's clever. However, a channel, by definition, is an attack in which you can't move or do anything else or else you break the channel and interrupt it. Moreover, this ability smacks of 'heads I win, tails you lose' - if they stay the full duration, they get Shadow Sickness and get damaged. If they leave at 2 seconds or more, they get Shadow Sickness and a little less damage. Either way, they're slowed to an absolutely absurd degree, get the penalty, and then likely die because Samuels's portion of the kit has two different immobilizes and one of them triggers by being within 500 range of him. Related to which, this E doesn't specify its range so I'm going to assume it's like Fiddlestain's Drain in terms of range. In any case, reacting within 1.9 seconds to get out of the channel is flatly impossible if you play Samuels right - just Q them first and then hit E. There's literally no way to lose. If they hit you, you have damage reduction. If they get away, you get healed. You literally cannot lose and that is a serious problem. Imagine fighting against this guy. How would you beat him? Could you even beat him? I really dislike Yasuo or Zed, say, but at least theoretically you can take them down and their kits have weaknesses. This guy... not so much.

Estabaan's E, I see, has taken inspiration from Warwick's ultimate. There is a difference here though: Warwick's ultimate has better damage, better scaling, and doesn't have the voracity cooldown and healing that Overwhelm has. So, I guess the upshot is you're not likely to hurt much, but you're both untargetable and your target is suppressed. On top of this, why on earth does armor give a random chance to avoid being suppressed? The damage proc duration is notably inconsistent in your description, but I'll assume it's 3 seconds. Ignoring that you have an almost direct mirror of Infinite Durass as a basic ability, there really isn't much to be said. It doesn't hurt anybody, random chance I've spoken about repeatedly and tying it to armor is silly, and you're hybridizing damage which, again, has balancing problems.

Samuels's portion of the ultimate... goodness gracious, really? Up to 150 bonus range to his auto attacks and up to 24% damage increase? So after this, his passive becomes an 800 range autoattack. This is literally the longest auto attack in the entire game. This is longer range than some abilities! It's certainly powerful, overwhelmingly so, but uninspired, not terribly creative given who Estabaan is made out to be and what your suggests, and a nightmare to balance. The moment Samuels gets to level 6, he becomes a stat check champion: you either have enough stats to beat him or you lose. No saving throwing. And you will lose, over and over and over and over again, because he will keep ramping up and nobody else ramps up like that. The active, I'm sure is cool and interesting, but why would you ever play as Estabaan when Samuels snaps the game balance in half? Maybe as a last resort when you're about to die, but you shouldn't be dying as this champion because it's impossible to lose unless you're going full ham and attacking the entire enemey team at once.

Anyway, to seriously look at the active, Estabaan's "true form" is... obscene. Up to 40% increased armor, magic resist, and tenacity? Really? How do you plan to kill him? I sure hope that tenacity doesn't stack with Merc treads or else no CC in the world will stick. Anybody playing him could walk around using his passive and nothing else and he'd be a stat check champion with boosts like that, not to mention given how weirdly and low his base damage and scaling is and gets that you may well have to. Lastly, in the (implausible) event estabaan dies, the penalty is... a damage and defensive stat debuff, but Samuels is still alive. So, you finally manage to bring down this beast Estabaan in a hypothetical 5 man gank that used all your ults combined and... Samuels is still alive. So you don't get any gold, no kill credit, and Samuels will likely be able to take at least one person down before he dies for real, assuming he dies at all, and what do you have to show for it?

Nothing.

You know, part of the CCOS's OP says the following, "Focus on what makes your champion unique from everyone else. Imagine playing against it - is this guy going to be permabanned like Zed or Yasuo?" You have certainly accomplished the first part, but that uniqueness stems from being unstoppable. If released, this guy will get banned first pick every single time. Nobody can compete against them and the only counter is your own Samuels and Estabaan. And from where I'm standing, that's not quite an ideal position. You may want to strongly consider toning things back into a more reasonable power budget and look into comparative analysis of contemporary champions who do what you want your champion to do in order to see a general idea of what's fair and what's not.

I hope this helps and thank you for your contribution!

Hey there :D I saw you concept in the CCOS list and thought I might give you some feedback ^^

First of...daim...what a theme...I LOVE it!!! Seriously, the quotes are AMAZING and made me crack up multiple times. His lore, the quotes, the kit, the whole concept and its lay out gives me the impression that a lot of work has been put into this. And believe me when I say that is has bore its fruit!!! This is truly an exceptional theme and character that I'd love to see in the rift in at least some way.

That said I'd like to point some things out. Just a great lore and character does not make a CCOS winner after all....

Let me start with the R. I start with his ultimate, not because there's a lot truly wrong with it (cus daim its awesome!!) but more because for the first few minutes of reading this I kept asking myself....how the hell does this dude change forms...I really think you should mention somewhere at the start that he is able to change with his ultimate, since that would clarify a lot about the first 3 abilities. Other then that, I believe that it might pose a very strong comeback ability, since Samuels can just activate that and selfdestruct, then becoming full health almost instantly AND gaining major defensive and offensive power...Like i said, like the idea, nothing inertly wrong with it, other then that you might need to think on putting a cap on it. Maybe a base health percentage needed to activate or the possibility for enemies to still kill him while changing and canceling the transformation....

Then his Passive: This is a nice idea. Really digging it....HOWEVER...its very strong. This ability might very well be the sole reason this champion would be overpowered. So people just get randomly stunned/feared by being in his presence? Even with a cooldown (which you did not mention btw...I do really hope this has a cooldown of at least 15 seconds or so) this would be a very powerfull passive. Maybe add a part where he cant have this effect twice on the same enemy in like 10 seconds or something...That would move some of the power from it already. Still this would make Samuels a toplane Tsunami that just barges through without his enemy being able to get close enough to hurt him...I suggest seriously rethinking this.

Then his Q: Thats a lot of text...Like I said, it took me some time to understand whiteout knowing exactly how he transforms...But thats not the only problem here. This ability (especially Samuels side) is really overloaded: It's a knock-back (for minions....which is weird....why would you want to knock back minions), It's a root, it's nice magic damage and it's a resistance reduction....combine that with his passive and nobody is ever gonna get close to him...I see the appeal and thought process behind it, but you should really consider taking some effects off... Additionally, try to rewrite the whole thing...maybe I'm just reading it wrong, but the way you explain the ability (and other abilities) is very confusing. Clarify a few things and try to use terms that Riot uses as well (For instance: "Samuels pauses for another 0.75 seconds" what do you mean with this exactly? Is it a channel? Is it him just standing still? Can he move?). The Estabaan side is pretty powerfull as well, though I am willing to give that a pass since this form is just temporary...still its really similar to Nautilus's Riptide ability (in theme and effect) and the fact that it's a AoE knock-up does not make it a lot better...

Then his W: Is an alright ability. It works thematically and would allow him to be a little tanky. Its nice and simple with little to be confused about :) The only thing I can point out its that Riot is not a fan of random chances (they took away dodge chance for exactly that reason...). It's too unreliable, so maybe rework the same effect in a timed system or a stack system. That would work better.

Then his E: Again this ability is a bit unclear and a bit overloaded...This ability deals a lot of damage per second, It slows a CRAPTON, it will give an enemy a debuff that will reduce their healing AND it will heal Samuels...I mean, thats really niche...depending on his machup, thats either totally useless or incredibly strong... The Estabaan part is OK...though again I would do away with the random chance mechanic....Its too unreliable. I find it a bit confusing how you explain the timing...so first during the jump, both he and his target are untargetable? But during this same duration and 1.8 seconds afterward, the enemy is suppressed? I don't know...take a second look and think try and find a way to convey your idea more clearly. I really think that this has a lot of potential :)

All in all I think that his kit needs some work. I also would have loved to see some more synergy in his kit. As of now, his abilities are all just mechanics that could have been 4 things on 4 random champions separately...What I'd like to see is some way in which they can be used together...If you already found one, then by all means, expand your gameplay section :D

I really think this is an awesome idea and an awesome champion. The kit needs some work, but seeing as how much you've worked on it already and how much love you most surely have put into it, I'm sure that you will work it out and make a champion worth of the top five in this months CCOS :)

As a disclaimer, I give feedback based off of my own ideas and conceptions on the game. If anything I said conflicts with your idea of what you want for your champion, then please stick to your original idea. These concepts are our ideas and are close to our hearts, so I wouldn't want to be responsible for steering Samuels and Estabaan away from what you want them to be :)

Good luck in the CCOS this month ^^ Your's truly, Candurill

Great concept. Really enjoyed it. But I ask to be excused...because when I read Estabaan I immediately thought of this. XD

Hey there! As a fellow CCOS participant, I just browsed the entries and found yours... and I decided that I'm gonna write a thing!

First of, I absolutely adore the characters. I just love how in the lore, the quotes and in general they are working together so well. From a lore standpoint the synergy is strong here. So much care should not go unnoticed. [slayer-pantheon-thumbs]

Now to his kit... Nothing much to add here, really, everything that should have been said already has been said. The passive free zoning, the general overload on Samuel, the complete random on Esteeban W, The general issues with the E, Ultimate questions... I feel like there is enough of feedback regarding all of this and more, so I won't make you read a wall of text to find out about the things you already know :P

So all that's left to say is, that I really want to see this champ walk and work. Be in the game in some form. I am just digging the concept and some of the sassy quotes. But well... It Fan-Champions, aye? We can be lucky to get acknowledged :D

Anyways, good luck with reworking this. If you want to take a look at my concept and leave some feedback go see Strak, the Sparkkiller

See ya!

Thanks to all of you guys for leaving reviews. I really appreciate your feedback and I've worked hard to make Samuels and Estabaan the champion you all recommended.
