[Champion Concept] Andusk, the Haunted Colossus

Hey y’all! Here we are again with another Champion Concept. This is Andusk, the Haunted Colossus (tentative title, I was considering “Hulking Shadow” and “Nightmare Titan” before settling for what he is now). He is, in some respects, similar to Amumu as a damage-focused AP Tank, though Andusk is more support-oriented than Jungle-oriented (similar levels of damage, less CC but more/different types of utility).

He's the physical manifestation of the extra magic power that Maokai was unable to contain mixed with the power of death (as a result of the Ruined King opening the rift in the Shadow Isles). Essentially, he's a lesser spirit of nature and a spirit of death (but not a "bad" kind of death, as in this also includes the primal magic released by the self-sacrifice of his wife and his love for his child - kind of like Lily protecting Harry Potter) that were somehow mixed together and became the "armor" of Andusk's fragile but somewhat intact human soul. His human shell has been destroyed, but as a result he has tapped into Maokai's psyche (kind of like Kog'Maw following Malzahar's "voice").

I'm aware that it really doesn't look like a League Champion (hell, seems like he'd fit DotA more). It's just something similar. Perhaps less green, more dark-brown-ish. Andusk also has a large stone in his chest that looks like Frozen Heart - hence the quote when buying it.

N.B. - Andusk is not a tree - he is an enchanted construct creature (like a golem) made of intertwined natural materials (which may include tree bark, but is not limited to just that - includes rocks, roots, ferns, bushes, etc.) latched onto a magic stone imbued with the love of his wife and child. Essentially, it's his family that sustains his form. The attached picture isn't exactly what I want him to look like - just some sort of base image as an inspiration.

Crack!

My hand tingles. I can feel… pain? Is this pain? Tried to stop the green going away. Hit a tree. Hitting. No, punching. Tree broke. Green gone. Sad. Pretty colors gone. Around me, looks… dead. Yes, dead. Death. End. Dark. And the cold. The same cold is back. Why is it so cold?

Memory I come from tree? No, before tree. Who am I? Who was I? Past. Thinking in past. Yes, learning more. Remember. Remember. I like this word. Memory. Where I was?

My hand. I remember, not so dark. Not so big. Not so rough. Red. No, pink. Pink? Hand was not red, was not white, something in the middle. Much smaller. Little… fingers. Yes, fingers. Ah, little things. Now, my fingers are gone. Big and sharp now. But I had them before. Before… what? What happened?

My hand. Start from the hand. Touch… another hand. Not as big. Tiny, even. Remember, remember. A small little thing. I see… a face? Yes, a face. Eyes. Big, beautiful brown eyes. Beautiful? I remember that word. Beautiful eyes, beautiful hair. Little thing sleeping, its hand in my hand. Young. Children? Child. Yes, it is a child. A girl. But who was I?

I remember another hand. Still smaller, but more firm. Longer arm. Slender. Beautiful face. The same beautiful brown eyes and hair. But… taller. Yes, tall, like me. She smiles. A smile? Such a beautiful thing. She smiles at me. I think I smile back. I feel fuzzy. Something in my chest feels hot. A heart? My heart. But I don’t feel my heart anymore. Where did it go? Did it go with the pretty colors?

More creatures. Humans. Men, in shiny metal. Armor? Yes, they were soldiers. They were running… to where? No… from what? They were loud. I want them to be quiet, because the child is sleeping. But the shouting gets louder.

”Death is coming!”

Dead… like the trees. They are coming. What is death? The girl stirs in her sleep. The other one beside me… the woman. My wife. She looks afraid. Fear – such a cold feeling. Is that the cold I felt? Fear? I pick up the child. My wife pulls my hand, and we run with the soldiers. I do not know why we run, but I feel the cold coming. The fear.

Behind me, the trees become dark. The green goes away. Everything is dying. Things start looking pale, like a ghost. Spirits. I see them fly towards a great tree. A giant oak. I remember the tree, at the heart of the forest. The soldiers die, one by one. They fall to the ground, and feed the earth. We run, and we run… but to where? We are lost – lost inside the forest. We find the great oak. The woman, my wife. She pushes me inside a hole beneath the tree. She is crying. She covers the hole with something. A boulder, maybe?

The child… my child, she is crying. She does not understand. I do not understand, either. Slowly, her cries become more and more quiet. Her breath – her breathing, it becomes slow. I feel sadness. Tears. I cry, for my child. She is dying. I am dying, too, but I do not feel it. I hold my child close to me, while death approaches. I hug her tight, and I feel her warmth. She grows colder and colder, but I cannot help her. Death catches her, too, and the color goes away. I cry, and I cry. Something above me moves. The oak… has it died? Will I die too? I am scared. I think I fall asleep.

Clarity Hungry… so, so hungry… But hungry for what? I do not hunger for food. Is it knowledge?

The Blessed Isles. That is where I am. Can it really still be called Blessed? Now, it is dark, drab, deathly. It is a shadow of the past. Shadow. Shadow Isles? My name… it is Andusk. I barely remember it. Am I dead? Perhaps. I do not feel any blood coursing through me. I am… jagged, monstrous. I am no longer human. Instead of blood, I feel magic. The magic belongs to someone else. It belongs to the tree, behind me, that protected me from absolute death. It is the great oak that my wife pushed me into. But it is not as I remember it. It is broken, with only parts of the trunk remaining. Where did it go? There is an echo in my head – a name. It is vague, but getting clearer and clearer. It is the name of the oak. Where did it go?

I must find it. Perhaps it will know the answers. What have I become? The boulder that my wife pushed onto the hole… it is now in a strange shape, in my chest. That is where the magic comes from. Is this now my heart? I do not know. I cannot feel anything. My child is gone. My wife is gone. All that’s left is that name. Maokai. Where are you, Maokai? Tell me, what happened here? And what have I become?


Abilities

Passive: Curse of the Forest http://media.playdota.com/hero/113/skill-1.jpg Damage from Andusk's normal spells and autoattacks apply stacks of Curse, each lasting 6 seconds. After reaching 5 stacks, enemies are Feared for [1/1.2/1.4/1.6] seconds (increases at levels 6, 11, and 16). This cannot occur on the same Champion or Large Monster for 8 seconds.

This is kind of like Braum’s passive, I guess, except it can only be applied by him (or a Shadowbranded ally). Thematically, it just "spreads" the curse of death that envelops him.

A flurry of stones and branches fly in target direction, dealing [80/120/160/200/240] (+60% AP) Magic Damage in a line, snaring the first enemy Champion hit for [1/1.25/1.5/1.75/2] seconds.

Generic line skillshot CC spell. Generally maxed first for the CC duration. The Snare only affects the first Champion hit, but the damage continues throughout the line.

W: Shadowbrand http://classic.battle.net/war3/images/undead/spells/antimagicshell.gif [45/45/45/45/45] Mana | [22/20/18/16/14] sec. Cooldown | Range: 750

Andusk taps into the primal magic within himself, marking an allied Champion, increasing his and the marked Champion's movement speeds by [8/12/16/20/24]%, which decays over the duration. During this time, the marked Champion applies 1 stack of Curse every 2 autoattacks. If Andusk casts Shadowbrand on himself, he does not gain movement speed and instead increases his Autoattack range to 200, increasing his Armor and Magic Resistance by [10/15/20/25/30] and he deals [10/15/20/25/30] (+4% of Bonus Health) bonus Magic Damage on his autoattacks and spells. Shadowbrand lasts 12 seconds.

An offensive support-style spell, between the ally’s attacks and Andusk’s spells, they’ll be able to Fear a select target pretty quickly. The self-cast allows Andusk to solo-lane if he needs to. This is usually maxed second, since the Cooldown is incredibly long early in the game. The increased auto range only makes him equal to Mordekaiser and Tahm Kench.

E: Beacon Gravestone http://vignette4.wikia.nocookie.net/wowwiki/images/2/2d/Inv_elemental_crystal_life.png/revision/latest?cb=20080906120557 [60/65/70/75/80] Mana | [16/15/14/13/12] sec. Cooldown | Range: 800 (Same as Zyra's Q) | AoE: 300 (for comparison, Trundle's pillar is 375)

Andusk summons a magic gravestone after a 0.35 second delay, dealing [85/125/165/205/245] (+45% AP) Magic Damage in an area, slightly knocking away enemies in the center. Lasts 6 seconds. During this time, enemies nearby are slowed by 30%, and nearby allies’ movement speed is increased by half the slow amount. Can be recast once for free to move the Gravestone's position (does not deal damage or knockback again). The cooldown only applies after the Gravestone expires.

Functionally, it’s like Trundle’s pillar mixed with Orianna’s W. Maxed last, since the utility doesn’t change.

R: Primal Pulse http://www.playdota.com/img/hero/28/skill-0.jpg [100/100/100] Mana | [120/100/80] sec. Cooldown | AoE Range: 600 (Same AoE as Gangplank's Ult)

Active: For 1.5 seconds, Andusk has 10% decreased movement speed and cannot attack or cast spells. After this delay, he releases the rampant magic within the stone in his chest, dealing [100/170/240] (+60% AP) Magic Damage to all nearby enemies, and granting a shield for [150/250/350] (+70% AP) Health to all nearby allies for 3 seconds (Andusk’s shield only lasts 2 seconds). If Andusk’s own shield is not broken before those 2 seconds are up, it shatters and homes in on the nearest enemy Champion, dealing [40/70/100] (+35% AP) to the target, ignoring 15% of their Bonus Magic Resistance, and instantly applying 5 Stacks of Curse of the Forest to the target.

This is basically the opposite of Galio’s ult – you WANT to attack Andusk as much as possible, otherwise the expiring shield can temporarily take out one Champion from the teamfight. The 1.5 seconds of “channel” time is mostly a “get away from him” sign (like Ezreal’s ult, you can’t actually cancel the channel; it’s more of a windup). This is a very strong teamfighting spell, since it deals damage and shield allies at the same time. However, it’s easy to play around it, especially if you have good disengage.

Pairs well with: Twitch Kalista Sejuani Amumu

Marksmen that can apply stacks of Curse to multiple enemies mesh very well with Andusk, possibly Fearing multiple enemies at once. Also, allies that have a lot of AoE CC allows Andusk to pull his ultimate off with more ease. In any case, teamfight-focused Champions in general work well with the Haunted Colossus.

Is Good Against: MasterYi Darius Garen

Most melee Champions will be hard-pressed to kill Andusk's allies, especially if he has Shadowbrand available, which allows them to peel for themselves.

Is countered by: Janna Gragas Alistar Tristana LeeSin

Displacement is a major issue for Andusk, since he has no innate gap closers outside of a situational movement speed boost. Janna and Gragas can separate teams, causing teamfights to break apart. Alistar and Tristana can knock Andusk away from his allies, making him potentially waste his Ult entirely. Lee Sin can actually cause Primal Pulse to backfire - knocking Andusk into his own team will not only negate any of the Shield that allies may have (because of Dragon's Rage's raw damage), it also removes the threat of the Fear.

I’ve always wanted to have more “depth”, I guess, to what happened in the Shadow Isles (the Ruined King opening the rift between life and death – what happens after that?) and this is kind of my take on what could happen.

Author's Note: You'd be right if you think there's something wrong with the way I wrote the Lore. I intentionally made it so that the sentences were run-on, repeated constantly, and had a distinct lack of structure. I was trying to simulate how someone who was "reborn", essentially, would feel, when having to re-learn everything from basic knowledge ("what is a hand?") to more complex feelings ("what do I feel for my wife and child?").

As he absorbs his surroundings, Andusk's knowledge gradually grows - this is exemplified by the way the sentences get longer and more... complex, if you will. Nevertheless, even towards the end, his thoughts are still fragmented (note the repetition of "Where did it go?", "what have I become?" and the way the phrases were badly juxtaposed); since he is technically no longer human, his thought process has "slowed down", if that makes sense. Now, he is driven by more primal emotions - namely, his raw desire and hunger for knowledge, which guides him towards the source of his power: Maokai.

I feel odd reading your passives because you call them Innate. It's a good concept and I LOVE your jokes for Karthus and Maokai.

I all be happy to look at abilities more indeaf (horrible speller) if you explain this word choice and/or change it.

CCOS: Share the love

What is wrong:

  1. Passive doesn't say whether it would work from your attacks or when you are being attacked. Have to guess that it would work from your attacks. Also, it doesn't change as games goes on and procing it early game seems a bit too hard.
  2. W is nearly useless to use on yourself if you aren't building full tank.
  3. R is way too strong. Does good damage to enemies, shield allies for even greater amount and then deals even more damage after 2 and stun an enemy with homing missile.

What is good:

  1. I like tree champions, so + there.
  2. Overall he is between strong and OP, but simple better calculations for his damage could sole easily.
  3. Carry support theme is something we need, so + there.
  4. E is quite nice. I once done champion with ulty like that, so i like stuff who can be relocated in another location.

Love it, But you as the qoute for maokai you are basically making riot have 2 tree champions. Also in his q ability you stated "Pretty short like maokai" But in all i do lie the champion

Hello Axis I think that the concept is cool and so but hes too much of a simular to Maokai in the way he looks, HE could surely make it in but He is a tree from the shadow isles like MAo But good work

I like it, a bit similar to Moakai in lore and appearence. Its unique tho and kewl. I suggest add another factor such as how Brand is a spirit of Fire and Renewal.

CCOS: Share the Love

First off let me just say I really liked the Lore of this guy, very well written, and secondly putting in all those dialog lines in must have taken a long while. Now for the Kit; his passive is simple and straight forward which I approve of but might be a bit heavily gated by its 5 hit proc but it's hard to tell outside of the game. His Q is also a nice balance of damage and cc for what it is, the W I'm not so sure of; it seems to offer Andusk way more if he only casts it on himself, maybe if the bonuses were split more between him and the ally. E is pretty neat I feel but maybe if it could be moved more than once per cast it could have more uses, something like ori's ball or Azir's solders; just imagine a grave stone rushing out of the bush like "Surprise MotherF**ker." Finally the R I feel could use some rebalancing, maybe make it more back loaded then a small delay AoE nuke/shield, Maybe if it was Cast> small damage> 2 seconds> Big damage + smaller aoe stun? I don't know just throwing out an Idea. Anyway, hope you found this useful and Good luck in the ccos thing!

His ulti applies his passive... But what if they trigger at the same time? I just think it'd be better to have one of them, and let the other one go. Also, that being said, if you DO choose the fear over the stun, I think it'd be really nice to have the fear scale with his ulti rank. Maybe something like "duration increases to 1.25/1.5/1.75." Also, maybe reduce the cooldown of the fear from 12? Given that it feels difficult to actually trigger without major persistence, it should be able to use again sooner. Maybe 8 seconds?

Your kit is interesting, his W defiantly shows off the important of his passive, he has a strong initiate with his E, his Q seems a little lack luster since Zyra's version of this has a longer range, the exact same scaling, and can snare anyone it hits. Overall he is a great champion concept and hope for the best.

Sharing the love here

The passive isn't bad at all. Perhaps you might want it to scale with the champion level instead of the ultimate, though functionally (unless the person accidentally puts in the wrong point) it will be the same.

The Q is probably the least interesting in my opinion, but it still could be interesting enough to like anyway.

The W implies that he could easily go support as his main focus. Was this the intended lane, or did you prefer for him to, say, jungle instead?

The E will be a lot of fun if it's like trundle's pillar.

The R sounds like it has too much in a single package. A shield, damage, more damage and a fear in a single ability that can't be cancelled. Though it could be avoided since you can just walk away, I suppose.

Overall, very well thought out! Well done!

CCOS So this is evil Maokai, way to be original. Passive is ripoff of Braum Q is also ripoff of Braum, just stronger. W is Nunu blood boil, just better when used on yourself. E also ripoff of Maokai , but slow always instead of exploding to slow. R would be first original thing but it is strange and less good ripoff of Maokai. Way to be original, good job.

Passive: the fear seems a bit long for a passive. I also feel odd when you apply 6 stacks, but proc at five... typo?

Q: nice little idea that's a reverse of an idea that I have in store. It's good harass and poke and provides setup in the late game (root tank, dive carry)

W: I'll say it now, the W and the E need to swap keys. Trundle mains are going to hate having their new champ pillar on a new key, as well as support mains (most supports have their main support tool on their W). Other then that, it's a good skill. I feel that the move speed should be innate (Punintentional puns :3) rather then a secondary active.

E: Other then placement issue... great work :3

Ult: too much damage! I can deal with the OMG WTF shield (btw nerf that). I can deal with Ashe level damages. I can not deal with bonus damage for being a meat shield! You may have over did it... a lot.

The order of best to worse in the skill department goes: Q, E, Passive, W, and lastly, Ult.
