They wanted to surrender. They saw no light in what could only be described as a game of blood. But I saw something else. The elusive S rank. I knew if we surrendered now I would have no choice but to come out of this game with only another unsatisfying A grade. They spoke desperately, begging for a surrender to relieve them of their misery. And indeed even for me it was misery. Spontaneous latency plagued me, not to mention my keyboard seemed to be dying and refused to accept commands every now and then. But, these were trivial things. I knew I had been doing everything right to get an S, despite the overall dire-ness of the game. I refused another surrender vote before saying "I'm getting my goddamned S." The bleak response came back "But you're not though." I became un-immersed from the game for a second and stared at the screen. "Watch me." The game became even more grim as the enemy team began to make a final push into our base. The structures we needed to protect were being brought down left and right. They reached our Nexus, the final structure that would seal the enemy victory once it fell. I looked at my respawn timer. 7 seconds left. The nexus health was falling fast, and there were 3 reds beating on it. 3 seconds. They stopped hitting the nexus when it could only withstand another two hits and started taunting. Dancing and bragging about their soon-to-be victory. I respawned. Jumping into the mix of them I attacked their marksmen, throwing my abilities at their main source of damage and also the weakest in defense. But, when they saw me rush at them, they all turned and dealt the final blow to the nexus. The game thus ended, with the word "DEFEAT" written across the screen. The game was over. But, there was something else I needed to check. I hit the "Continue" button, prompting the post-game screen to pop up. I scanned for my grade and smiled when I saw it. S- But yet...something was off. The notification telling me I had earned an S on my champion had not shown itself. Does that mean I didn't get a shard? The last shard I needed in order to reach the final Mastery level on Kindred would thus not be mine? Ah yes, I thought to myself. Loses do not give shards, even if an S grade was earned... "......." "DAMNIT RITO!"
