A Mage similar/based on the Staff Reaper from GW2
Essentially in GW2 (MMORPG) there is a class called Necromancer, once you hit level 80 you basically do a mini quest type thing (no easy way to describe it to people who don't play) and you can evolve into a Reaper. It's basically a toggle, but you need to fill a life force bar to be able to use it (by dealing damage, using spells). I personally play a Power Reaper (like the name suggests, I build armor/weapons that specialize in Power, Precision and Ferocity, which increases crit damage) Although many people build to specialize in Condition damage and power. Some of this information is slightly irrelevant, but I'm trying to add things to make it understandable as possible In GW2, you can choose what weapon you use which swaps out your skillset. With staff, You have 4 skills and an autoattack spell. The 4 spells you have are all aura spells where you place an AOE circle on the ground and they do things like boon strip (take away positive conditions), deal poison, slow, chill etc. My favourite way to play the class is run around in a World vs World area (a warzone) and fight solo players (1v1s basically). You apply conditions with staff, then you toggle your reaper stance and you basically turn into a heavy damage dealing monster ;p So, my basic idea would be something like Jayce or Nidalee, where your R transforms you. QWE in normal form could just be 3 aura zones which for example can slow, apply conditions like grievous wounds or bleed and one to give you boons or something along those lines. The R would transform you into essentially a reaper and you'd have more aggressive spells (in GW2, you're given a large scythe with decent mobility and you become melee). You go from basically a control mage to a burst mage when you use your ultimate. The cooldown would obviously not be very short like Nidalee, it would be probably the average length of a normal ultimate, maybe even similar to one of the longer cooldowns based on how balance-able it is.
Thanks for reading, this is a very rough idea, literally just thought of it moments ago.
edit: for example, here are staff necro abilities. All the zones need to be stepped on to trigger.
Mark of Blood: (Q) Inscribe a mark that bleeds foes when they trigger it, and grants regeneration to allies. Chillblains (W) Chill and poison the target area. Putrid Mark (E) Inscribe a mark that transfers conditions from yourself to foes when they trigger it. (If you have grievous wounds it'll transfer to them when they step on the circle, for example) Reaper's Mark (Q,W or E.) Inscribe a mark that causes fear when foes trigger it.
Reaper's Shroud (R) Assume the form of a reaper and gain new skills. (turning your life force into health) REAPER FORM Death's Charge (Q) Slide forward, destroying projectiles in your path. Blind foes at your destination. Infusing Terror (W) Shroud yourself with dark armor that grants stability every second. You may shatter this armor to fear foes around you. (stability is a GW2 specific thing, so ignore it I guess) Soul Spiral (E) Spiral and damage nearby foes, dealing high damage Executioner's Scythe (Q,W or E) Deliver a powerful overhand strike to stun a single target. Deals more damage the lower health the target is. Leaves behind a field of ice.
**OBVIOUSLY this seems very broken because of the utility and conditions, fear's/bleeds would need to be removed and such since every ability does damage + something else since in GW2 there are dungeons etc where your spells need to just do a lot. **
