Monthly Champion Rework Contest-gauging interest
Reworking champions is hard. Just ask Stashu, Scruffy, Xelnath, or any of Riot's other designers who have been tasked with doing it over the years that League has been out. Making a kit that is more satisfying, more balanceable, and still holds on to what fans of the champion love and identify with is an incredibly difficult job. It's arguably harder to do a good rework kit then it is to design an original champion, since a lot of the theming you could play with when designing something new is already locked in when you're doing a rework.
In that spirit, I'd like to run a champion Rework contest on this forum sometime in the near future. Of course, there's no point in running it without some interested people to participate, and I can't get anyone interested without talking about a little of what I envision the contest to be.
##What the Contest will be Like
I want this contest to be a little less serious then ArmaMalum's CCC or the MCCC that came back from the old forums. CCC fills the niche of a very nearly open format contest where just about anything goes, while the MCCC had much stricter thematic guidelines for each month's challenge. In this challenge, the guidelines for the challenge will come mostly from the champion that's being reworked.
Every participant will be reworking the same champion in each iteration of the contest. This is to ensure that judging is consistent, as some champions are much harder to rework then others. Keeping some of the champion's pre-rework skills will be allowed, but everyone will have to come up with some new stuff in order to succeed.
I'll be judging the contest based on a few categories which I don't have entirely locked in yet. Staying true to the champion's original theme/playstyle will be important for sure. At the same time, though, you'll need to put your own spin on the kit, so that it feels different and yet still the same. It's not easy for sure.
There's one big twist in the format, though. The most important part of a rework is its reception in the court of public opinion. Anywhere between one half and one third of the score (I haven't decided yet) will be based on a vote after concept submission is completed but before scores are out. Anyone who submitted a concept will get an additional vote that they cannot use on themselves. Popularity will not be the sole determiner of victory.
The contest will never be run at the same time as the CCC or MCCC. I plan to schedule submissions during the MCCC voting period so that people who want to participate in both have no problem doing so.
##Wrapping up
I want to run this contest, but only if people here in Skins and Champion Concepts want to participate. I understand that reworks don't necessarily fit in with the scope of this forum, but I think that there are a lot of people who just want more chances to show off their design skills.
To finish, let me ask two questions:
- Would you be interested in participating in this contest?
- If this contest ends up happening, who would you want to be the first champion reworked?
a spin.
Malphite would be a good one to try first.
for the 1st rework because he goes against what riot wants the game to be like. he is literaly centered around greed and not helping your teammates
