[Champion Concept] Thoran - The Spell Drinker

Dayvigilante·8/12/2015, 5:53:01 PM·15 votes·3,621 views

Role: Assassain

General Design Philosophy: Thoran is a melee anti-mage champion who absorbs his opponent's spells to then unleash them with devastating force. Thoran will store his oppponent's spells over time until he is brimming with stolen energy. Patience and smart play are rewarded when you unleash all his stolen energy with your devastating ultimate ability.

Appearance: Tall Pale man in knight regalia. Holds a strange and intricately adorned blade. http://img06.deviantart.net/431b/i/2013/080/e/3/primus___magic_knight_by_one_vox-d5ys8nv.jpg Image credit is due to PeteMohrbacher

Lore: Thoran always had a lot of respect for the land of runterra, and its rulers. When they were flung into conflict during the rune wars, he happily took his sword and joined the demacian army as a soldier. However he was not prepared for the scale of the conflict; he was not used to the destructive magic that ravaged the battlefields. Throughout the entire rune wars, he perservered, every day growing more resentful as he watched the once-beautiful landscape become charred and broken. Instead of blaming the rulers, he placed the blame on the magic that was being utilized to destroy everything he cherished. One day when his camp had gotten completely destroyed and most of his squadmates killed, he vowed to rid the world of magic altogether; deserting the military to train for this undertaking. It was during this time that he forged his signature blade, the Spell Drinker. When he finally returned to civilization, he was a different person, and went on a murderous spree, killing any and all practitioners of magic. He was captured and shipped to the Institute of War and imprisoned there, under the guise of "making a difference". He still plots his escape, but also takes great pleasure in killing the mages present in the League of Legends.

Strengths: Strong Counter pick champion to AP carries. Has the potential to deal tons of AoE damage and have tons of CC.

Weaknesses: Death is more punishing, no mobility outside of slows. Easy gank target, especially by AD junglers.

Plays most like...: Veigar Gnar Nasus

Auto Attack: A single slash with his sword. Melee: 150

Passive - Stolen Power - http://www.hiveworkshop.com/forums/resource_images/16/icons_15641_btn.jpg Nearby (1000) spell-casts will give Thoran a stack of Stolen Power. Each stack of Stolen Power will grant Thoran 1 Attack Damage and 1 Movement speed. The maximum number of stacks Thoran can have is 100. Thoran loses all of his stacks on death.

Thoran does not use Mana.

Q - Magicide - http://www.hiveworkshop.com/forums/resource_images/14/icons_13593_btn.jpg Thoran empowers his next basic attack to deal an additional 2/3/4/5/6(+1%AD) Magic damage for each stack of Stolen Power he has. (Maximum 200/300/400/500/600 (+100%AD) damage.) In addition, Magicide has the following effects if Thoran has a certain number of stacks. 25+: Reduces their AP by 10/15/20/25/30 for 3/3.25/3.5/3.75/4 seconds. 50+: Silences the target for 1.5 seconds. 75+: Also places a Spell Seal mark on them for 3/3.25/3.5/3.75/4 seconds (1.5/1.75/2/2.25/2.5 Seconds after the silence ends) . If they cast a spell with the mark on them, they take 10% of their current Health as magic damage. 100: If this ability kills a unit, it refunds 60% of its cooldown. Cooldown: 16/15/14/13/12

Note - Thoran will visibly change at each respective level. At 25 stacks he will faintly glow white, at 50 his blade will periodically release blue sparks, at 75 it will glow blue and his white glow will increase. At 100 stacks the glow will completely envelop his body and his walking and attacking animations will change.

W - Spell Drink - http://www.hiveworkshop.com/forums/resource_images/10/icons_9156_btn.jpg Thoran will hold his sword outward in anticipation of incoming spells. If he is hit by any spells in the next 0.75 seconds, they will be completely absorbed, and he will gain two stacks of Stolen Power and a 100/120/140/160/180 (+40% AD) Magic damage shield for the next 4 seconds. Cooldown: 12

E - SoulSpear - http://www.hiveworkshop.com/forums/resource_images/9/icons_8362_btn.jpg Thoran throws a spear in a line. The first enemy it hits will take 40/50/60/70/80 (+40%AD) physical damage plus 40% of their AP in bonus magic damage and be slowed by 20/30/40/50/60% + 10% of their AP for 4 seconds. Cooldown: 12/12/11/11/10 Range: 800

R - Unleashed Power - http://www.hiveworkshop.com/forums/resource_images/7/icons_6267_btn.jpg Thoran unleashes all of the stored power in his blade, and after a cast time of 0.01 seconds per stack, (1 second at 100 stacks) he expunges all the power in a line, dealing 10/15/20 (+2%AD) Magic damage per stack to any targets hit by it (1000/1500/2000(+200%AD) at max stacks). The length of the line remains consistent, but the width increases with stacks, from 100 units up to ~400 units in width. Additionally, the target suffers bonus effects based on the number of stacks consumed. 25+: Marked with a Spell Seal for 1/1.5/2 seconds. 50+: Stunned for 1/1.5/2 seconds instead. 75+: The spell leaves the area on the ground which it covers cracked and torn, slowing enemies by 40% while they are in that area. 100+: In addition, the ground brims with magical energy, dealing 20/30/40(+20%AD) Magic damage per second to any enemies in the area. Cooldown: 100 seconds Range: 1000

Champion Select - "Magic is a plague. I am its cure." Moving "A cheap replica of runeterra." "sigh even artificially the landscape retains such beauty." "A picture of what could have been." "Wherever magic lurks, I'll be there. "Moving out." "On your orders."

Attacking a target with more AP than AD "Die, Mage!" "I will cleanse runeterra, one mage at a time!" "Your Magic is a curse!" "Your Magic will not save you!" "Meet your end at the hands of spelldrinker!"

Attacking a target with more AD than AP "I don't want to hurt you." "We don't have to do this." "I am sorry." "Please, stop fighting! We are on the same side!"

Absorbing a spell with Spell Drink" "Your spellcasting only fuels my anger." "Your magic sates my blade. "It is useless to try that.

Casting Unleashed Power "This is what you have wrought!" "Witness your own end!" "This is the destruction you wield!"

Periodically, while having 100 stacks. "This... power..." "Could this be... why?"

Buying item 3155 "A cheap replica." "I see someone stole my designs." "Ugh. How poorly optimized."

Taunt (near AP champion) - thrusts his sword out. "If your magic is so powerful, then come, fight me!" Taunt (near AD champion) - thrusts his sword out. "Join me, we can cleanse runeterra together!" Joke (1 or more stacks.) - Takes a glass out, then pours a blue liquid into it from his sword, which he then drinks "Mmm... fruity." "Aah..." Joke (no stacks) - Takes a glass out, then tries to pour something out, with no success. "Awww..." Laugh: Amused chuckle.

Can say after reading a lot of champion concepts this one probably best one I've seen, I like the fact that theres a champion who absorbs spells and has a nice story too

Very nicely done. I'm not one to go in-depth into number tweaking, but here are a few things:

  • The Q is over-complicated. I think it's a good idea to have the increasing effect as you get more stacks, but the effects are too... random is the word I guess? Most stacking abilities just increase their damage, or in the case of Cassiopeia and Bard, give relatively simple effects. The silence is fine, but the spell seal progression gets a little weird... the skill is like, "On next hit, deal damage, drain mana, silence, apply a spell mark that damages them whenever they cast a spell, and reduce the damage that they do while they are marked". That's just unnecessarily complicated for an "on next hit" Q ability.

  • Speaking of the Q, Mana drain is anti-fun. I think it would be beneficial to change it to something else along with the other Q effects (but keep the silence, it's awesome there)

  • With the W, the skill is fine where it is already. As with the rest of this feedback, this is a suggestion for super fine tuning. So the only problem I have with this ability is that it's a bit boring and it feels like fiora's W. Something I personally have always been interested in doing that I have never found a good spot for (that works perfectly for this guy) would be something like: Swings his sword in an arc, absorbing all spells in a large cone in front of him. For each spell absorbed, gain the stacks and the shield, etc. Basically, it would be like a yasuo wall / braum shield that blocks abilities for a long time, this immediately eats abilites that are midair. It should be really rewarding because it is a lot harder to block stuff with. I think this also synergizes with the shield effect better, since the (slightly) more prolonged current version of the W being .75 seconds means you want them to dump the spells on you, but then you have nothing to shield. In this version, you eat their first spell and use the shield to block the other 2.

  • I personally have always hated the "scales with enemy AP" idea. It also just seems sort of anti-fun, but I can't deny that it is just super thematically viable on this champion. Go with your gut.

  • With the ult, the more complex progression is more fitting, but I'm still not sure if it's enough to justify such a strange buildup. It's fine where it is though.

well in the case of this champ if he snow ballz hes broken as shyt if he doesnt he will be worse then a feeding ap shaco syndra ult has the same name and his lines are kinda cheesey also his kit is very similar to kassidins general idea pre rework and he does too much dmg plus he is very fun looking :p league already has a bunch of ppl in knight out-fit and the whole do more dmg with enemy ap is already viegar's thing. ALSO as an ad champ he has too much burst and sistaned dmg and a champ that can only reliably kill ap champ but be garbage in solo queue unless the enemy team is full ap... but real talk how often does that happen

UNLESS U HAVE NEW MORDE BOT LANE but oh wait thats a shyty rework .... aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaawwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan

R.I.P. Mordekaiser

ur a very talited artist if u drew these its ver nice sry for the hate but hey dont judge me..... XD (hipocrit-2015)

Game Balance: I haven't read the comments or really have done a lot of math (in fact, i wasn't even really looking at any of the numbers besides his ultimate ability). However, quick idea for you. Since his passive is going to scale so well, especially into the late game, you might want to turn his base values up, and his ratios down. He deals a lot of fricking damage, and for someone who "soaks" spells up, he would seem more as a top lane tank than anything. I feel instead of being a mid laner, you should make him a mobility based tank that will just soak it up and throw at back in the enemy team's face. Or at least change the way he looks.

Looks:

Looks too much like Talon. Maybe a more barbaric look would be nice. He looks very noble and royal(ish), and I'm sure anyone who has any sort of understanding and power in this world can realize the power of magic.

I truly love the character design, and wish that was what Talon looked like actually, but I don't think this one fits with the theme of the character. Looks almost like a mage IMO.

Role:

Isn't a counter mage more like a tank/AD bruiser? Maybe I'm thinking of building him differently than intended, but you might want to think about his role a bit more.

Friends:

Not quite sure, but I think Sion is on the side of Noxus. Thoran should hate him. he killed Jarvan I.

Overall:

Thank you for doing this. You truly are some of the best of our community, and I love this character. I love his abilities, how he looks, and his personality shown through his quotes. Please, keep going through with this, and keep the steam rolling.

Holy fuck that's great. Only problem is the Q and R do far too much damage, with the Q being able to take 50% of a squishy target's HP in one hit with enough stacks, and the ult being able to almost 1 hit the beefiest tanks. Also, I think he should gain more than 1 Stolen Power per spells cast, otherwise it'd take like 20 minutes just to get 100 stacks, which you'd lose all of for dying once. Instead he should gain 5 stacks per spell cast, and lose half his stacks upon death.

Seeing as this is getting plenty of attention. You should think about putting this champion in the CCOS. Always good to see interesting concepts come onto the board.

Okay so... Here are my OPINIONS of doom on it.

Personality : Comes off as... Not okay levels of fickle broken in the head. I understand ASSIGNING blame to magic but to make that the ONLY DAMN THING is discordantly single note. Maybe have it so that in his youth he had the potential to be a mage and his teacher screwed up? Also assign an actual point of faction that the character has, his description makes it sound like he could have randomly ended up working for either Demacia or Noxius by a coin flip and I am sure they require citizenship for their soldiers.

With his sudden development of the "SPELL DRINKER" weapon of sudden uninformed skill he manages to forge a weapon that allegedly outpaces artifact weapons by himself...Maybe make it more the man than weapon that is doing it. Remember that mage potential suggestion? Make it so he is literally pulling the magic into himself because of it. The weapon is just a conduit...

And on the hexdrinker line, it makes him sound INSANELY full of himself. Suggested changes if you are keeping the over-zealous "I hate magic" attitude.

"Shame that you can't drink up as much as me." "What war produced this?" "Forged to slay magic, shaped alike in purpose."

It's a tiny bit more humble and tones down the clear sociopathic tendencies that the character has. :P

Kit : Simplify the living snot out of that passive, it creates a unsound foundation for the rest of the kit and makes him a character that is semi-randomly strong vs different characters and piss weak depending on who he is fighting.

For example, RIVEN, 5 spell casts per rotation without her ult included, need I explain? and Swain wouldn't be casting spells in lane really unless he was hitting your face and all inning you.

Also just getting a potential 100 ad and much, much...MUCH more importantly 100 movement speed is just insane and even with the most overpowered ult it would be considered the wrong choice to ever drop that movement.

My suggestion for the passive.

Reduce it to around 3 stacks. make it so each ability has some sort of stack use case. Allow the character to generate one stack out of combat after 10+ seconds to a max of one stack. Additional stacks are once every 10 seconds from the enemy casting a spell. By gating the charge up rate to a CD it prevents him from randomly have strange matchups depending on how the enemy's kit is setup. And it allows each stack to matter.

Maybe as he ranks up the ult he gains more stacks that he can carry on him to spend like GP and his powder kegs.

Weird question, but what would his voice sound like?

iRexYou8/13/2015, 5:14:45 PM1 votes

Yes this is so awesome league of legends NEEDS a Champion to the game he brings a few different things and concepts to the table its so cool!

Ennoraetil8/12/2015, 6:26:37 PM1 votes

This concept looks way more awesome than any other.

But one thing that couldn't work in-game is the "AP/AD champ taunt"

What if a Shaco plays AP instead of AD? which taunt would he use? durr. Or the opposite.

But apart from that, this concept is awesome..

Dayvigilante8/13/2015, 8:32:09 PM1 votes

Updated the Q.

-First rank (25+) now reduces the target's AP by up to 30 for up to 4 seconds. -Final Rank (100) now refunds 60% of its cooldown if it kills a unit.

In response to your well thought out critcism, in no particular order.

  • His role is labelled as an assassain for a reason. I see him building much like fiora: Mostly damage items with some bruiser/tank items thrown in. His intended lane is mid, and in particular to counter poke-heavy mages like ziggs, lux and xerath. However he can also work as an AP carry botlane or support, considering the more people around him the faster he will stack his passive. I can see him being built as a bruiser though, and I think his kit can reflect either playstyle.

-Think of his voice being deep and commanding, with a bit of strain in it.

-Perhaps it doesn't make sense that he would be able to forge such a complex sword without assistance of some kind. I'll think about it. As for the passive changes, it can't be like that without sacrificing the patient build-up over time aspect. Which I see as necessary to his kit.

-Your two points answer each other: yes, he can do insane damage, but to do so requires you to diligently stack for a long time. Also he changes visually: saying to your opponents that you better focus and kill him or he's going to blast you for 3000 damage.

It's amazing but.. If it can take away any magic spell is it then not a little to op? What's the point in playing an AP champ if only he has to pop up to ruin it? is there any counter play with AP? Sorry for my bad grammer
