1. Inspiration

Basically, I just wanted to make a mage that would do high dps and I was looking for a theme that's unused in the mage archetype AND not linked to Shurima because our two biggest dps mages, Azir and Cassiopeia, are both tied to Shurima. After a while, I decided to go for chains. Lots of chains, unlike Thresh. Pfff chain warden... He's got what, one chain? This dude is the doctor octopus of chains! ...

2. Role and gameplay

Primary role : Mage Seecondary role : Support

He's an immobile mage who would probably go mid. He has some decent utility, although his biggest CC is tied to his ulti and it can be kinda hard to pull off. Thanks to his passive and Q he can deal pretty large amounts of damage while staying at a range equivalent to Caitlyn's. However, like I said before, no mobility. IMO mobile champs should pay for their safety through other things in their kits, but I find that they usually don't, so I decided to give a lot of power to this champion to compensate for the lack of mobility. Yzariel would play like an opportunist. You try to hit your CC abilities and stack your passive, then when you feel safe, you can go in and tear your opponents apart. The biggest challenge when playing this champion is that all his damage can be avoided, so in team fights it's more than likely you'll want to wait for your team to initiate. That way you can follow up with some lockdown of your own and your large damage output.

3. Appearance and personality

Yzariel is dressed in tattered robes that were once royal garments. The robes are dark grey and trimmed with silver. Several chains hang out of his sleeves, collar and bottom of his robes. The chains are always moving, but follow no apparent pattern. Some coil around Yzariel's torso, legs and arms. Yzariel looks young, but his skin is ashen and his short hair is a stark white. His eyes burn with an inner purple light and his chains are bathed in an halo of a similar color. Yzariel is a champion from the Shadow Isles but I want him to feel like an outsider, so his base skin should deviate from the usual teal/pale green palette of colours that is so heavily associated with the Shadow Isles. Aside from Kalista, who is consumed by vengeance, and maybe Yorick (but Yorick's werid, so let's forget about him ;P) Yzariel is the only champion from the Isles who is not really evil. The image I linked is not suuuuper representative of what I had in mind, but it's the closest I could find. Basically, imagine this, but with less armor, no mask and more chains.

Yzariel floats around instead of walking. His attack animation has him either nodding or lazily pointing towards his target before one of his chains strikes. He speaks very softly. His VO lines would sound like whispers or rasps. His emotions would change drastically. Certain lines would have him sounding tired of it all, others desperate, some angry or even sadistic and some lines would have him sound hopeful.

Yzariel is a very conflicted character. After spending hundreds of years imprisoned in darkness, he's become mentally unstable. He wants to enact vengeance on those who wronged him, but he also wants to restore the Isles to their former glory. He's trying to do the right thing, but it's very hard for him to remember what is right and what is wrong. In the end, he has no qualms about hurting innocents to achieve his goal. I chose to make him a bit more complicated than the other Shadow Isles champions because I feel like they're becoming kind of cliché and I thought it would be interesting to have a ''good guy'' from the Isles. However, as I developed his back story, I realized it would be pretty unbelievable if he was still a cheerful, hopeful dude after suffering alone for centuries. I'm hoping his VO lines will help to really illustrate his inner conflict. I also hope that, from the point of view of other players, Yzariel would look like just another maniac from the Isles, because that's how other people in Valoran would perceive him. He's a good person, but that's buried deep within his withered heart XD

4. Lore

I've decided to write his lore in a manner similar to Sion's, meaning it's kind of a mess and it's not as easy to understand as most lores. It explores Yzariel's past and explains what the hell happened to him and hints at what happened to the Isles. Note that I've made an assumption about the lore of LoL and it is that Mordekaiser is the Ruined King. If that's not the case, then Yzariel's story would need some minor changes.

Anyway, here it is. Hope it's not too confusing :P

“Father, please, listen to reason! You’re setting us on a dark path from which I fear we way never return!” Screams. Agony. Laughter. Begging, pathetic begging. Tears in the darkness. Hope is all but lost. The memories swirl inside his broken mind, prying away what little peace he had found in eternal slumber. They are utter chaos, they care nothing for time. One jumps before its predecessor, another follows suit. Few are coherent enough to make sense. “Chain him!” His father’s voice boomed. Surprise. Shock. A mocking grin on the advisor’s lips. Confusion. “You have defied me for the last time, boy.” The last word had been spoken with such hatred, it had felt like a blow. He had stumbled back, scared of the darkness in his father’s eyes. The blows had come from behind. Then the chains. He had been forced on his knees. The iron ate at his magic. No spell would leave his fingertips. Bound by chains as any other man. “You have welcomed evil in your court and country. Can you not see that ruin is upon us all? This… man has tainted your mind.” “Guards, escort my son to his quarters. His idealism has no place here.” His father’s voice is cold, almost uncaring. There is no anger, only disgust. The anger came latter. The king goes back to his maps. A dark figure stands next to him, whispering poison and treachery in his ear. Pain. So much pain. It cannot be ignored. It must be welcomed. Insanity threatens to overwhelm him. Perhaps it would be better to simply let go. Stop fighting. The chains’ wicked hooks and blades tear into his flesh. Every movement is torment. Every breath brings new aches. “I fear for my father’s very soul, Katia.” His friend smiles sadly. She does not know what to say. She thinks him paranoid. They do not see that their doom looms over the horizon. A dark pit. It is his home now. No one comes. No food is given. No water. His throat is parched, the thirst almost unbearable. A beast lies in his stomach, clawing from inside. It needs to be fed. But he lives. The chains drink his magic. His power sustains him. “I rule these isles, not you! Not yet!” “Father, please! You must see…” “See? Yes, I see! I see the greed in your eyes. You want me dead. You think yourself king already. The masses proclaim your name, not mine, but I. AM. NOT. DEAD. YET!” “Father, I do not care about the throne! I am worried about you…” “You do not care for power? Truly?” A disbelieving snort echoes through the empty throne room. “That is good, my son, for I may yet reign forever.” There is no light. Only darkness. There are many sounds. His breathing. His whimpering. Hunger. The chains clinking against each other. The blood, dripping. Tears… How can he still cry if there is no water left in his body? He is withering. “How the mighty have fallen.” A voice. Mocking. A visitor? Here? Who? It breaks the silence once more. “Tell me, boy. How did you see through my lies? No one else pierced my illusions.” A sudden realization. He knows this voice. The dark one. He tries to answer, but only a pitiful croak escapes his lips. You are darkness incarnate, he thinks. Laughter. “Yes, I suppose you could say that. Bound by this physical form, though. Not for long now, however. Your father will see to that. A shame you won’t be here to see it.” It came to gloat? Maybe it is a man after all. Maybe it was a man, once. A storm rages outside. Magic tears at the very fabric of reality. Darkness falls. Something went wrong. Father… In your folly, have you stopped him? Life. Death. Which is which? There is no difference. Not anymore. Time flows. Misery outside these walls. Misery inside. The others are bound too. As trapped as he is. Sometimes, they extend their reach beyond the accursed shores. They collect souls from the mainland, they bring them back to play. The shadow of war falls upon the mortals. Vengeance runs amok. Widows weep. Souls, trapped for eternity. Death’s prophet sings of final oblivion. The very land screams, it pulses in revulsion, it reaches out and rebels. In the end, they will all be forgotten. Their story will remain untold. Sleep. Oblivion. A pulse of life. A newcomer. An abject covenant is passed. Sleep. Another pulse. Newcomers. A sacrifice in death, it feeds life never-ending. It is not the first time. The poor soul screams. It awakens him. His eyes are open. He cannot remain asleep. Darkness surrounds him. He summons wisps of ghostly light. His cell is small, but still remarkably intact. He is still chained. The chains move. They slither around his body. No longer bound. They are part of his flesh. They have fused with his very soul. Release. Sweet, sweet release. Freedom…? Yes, freedom! Vengeance… The emperor still walks the earth, spreading his disease. A pause, a moment of incertitude. No. Justice. Deliverance. Redemption.

5. Base stats

Health: 542-1908 Health Regeneration: 7.25-19.5 Mana: 362-1405 Mana Regeneration: 6.0-19.6 Range: 550 Attack Damage: 55-108 Attack Speed: 0.658 (+0%-32.7%) Armor: 20.4-91 Magic Resistance: 30 Movement Speed: 345

6. Abilities

The text below the skill description is just additional info about each skill.

Passive - Soul Rend

Yzariel’s spells add a stack of Soul Rend to targets hit for 6 seconds, up to 4 stacks. Upon reaching 4 stacks, enemies will take magic damage equal to 2%/3%/4% (+1% per 100 ability power) of their maximum health every second for 4 seconds (maximum 200 for monsters). Additional spell hits will immediately deal bonus magic damage equal to 1%/1.5%/2% (+1% per 200 ability power) of an enemy’s maximum health (maximum 150 for monsters).

Enemies hit by one of Yzariel's spells will have a mark placed above their heads that counts up to 4, similar to Braum's passive. When the mark is triggered, purple energy claws at the target and when Yzariel hits an affected target with another spell, the energy around the target flashes more brightly for a moment. The values change at levels 6 and 11. This passive allows Yzariel to deal with all kinds of targets and heavily favors going all-in for a kill. Yzariel's passive is one of the two things that allows him to scale extremely well with levels, the other being his Q.

Q - Ripper's Claws

Cost: 40/45/50/55/60 mana Cooldown: 3/2.5/2/1.5/1 seconds Range: 750 Width: 60 Missile Speed: 1400 Yzariel summons a chain that strikes enemies in a line, dealing 70/105/140/175/210 (+60% ability power) magic damage. This ability can be cast while moving.

Yzariel sends forward a chain with a sickle at its tip (kinda like Thresh's chain) that tears through his enemies before quickly recoiling towards him. This is Yzariel's main dps and farming tool. Pretty straightforward ability, unlike the others.

W - Grasp of the Grave

Cost: 75 mana Cooldown: 6/5.5/5/4.5/4 seconds Range: 500 Length: 450 Width: 60 Leash Range: 750 Delay: 0.35 second Missile Speed: 1350 A chain launches forward from the selected point to the target location. The chain will lodge itself into the flesh of the first enemy hit, dealing 20/30/40/50/60 (+20% ability power) magic damage every 0.5 second and slowing it by 35% while the chain is lodged into the enemy. An enemy affected by Grasp of the Grave will have the range of its movement abilities reduced by 50%. The chain will stay inside the target for up to 2 seconds, but it can be broken if the target moves too far away from the chain’s point of origin.

When Yzariel casts this ability, one of his chains digs into the ground and emerges from the ground to shoot itself towards the target location. If it hits an enemy, the chain will stay inside it until the effect ends. When it does, the chain simply pulls back into the ground and crawls back inside Yzariel's robes. This ability functions like Rumble's ultimate or Viktor's E, meaning that you select a point of origin for the chain and it will shoot in a target direction. The range of W, 500, represents a radius around Yzariel from which you can select the point of origin of the chain. The length, 450, is the maximum distance travelled by the chain from its point of origin. To break the effect, an enemy must move away from the chain's point of origin, NOT from Yzariel. The total distance needed to travel to break the effect is 750. I've also decided to add some unique utility to the skill in the form of reducing the range of abilities that moves your champion (Lee's W, Vi's Q, Ezreal's E, etc.). Why? Simply because Yzariel is really vulnerable to being dove and IMO if you have a mobility skill, the counterplay to Yzariel's W is to use that skill BEFORE YOU'RE HIT, not after. I, for one, find it kinda bullshit that mobile champions can get hit by soft CC and pretty much ignore it when they had an additional chance to avoid it in the first place. Well no more! XD

E - Heartseeker

Cost: 80/85/90/95/100 mana Cooldown: 9 seconds Range: 800 Width: 80 Missile Speed: 1200 Pull Range: 800 Pull Distance: 400 (First Cast) Chains leap towards the target location, passing through enemies hit and lodging themselves inside them, dealing 60/95/130/165/200 (+50% ability power) magic damage and revealing them for 3 seconds. (Second Cast) For 3 seconds after casting Heartseeker, Yzariel can select an affected enemy. All other enemies hit by Heartseeker will be violently pulled for a set distance towards the target.

When Yzariel uses Heartseeker, several chains shoot out from his sleeves and coil themselves around enemies hit. If Yzariel uses the secondary activation, all the chains will shoot towards the select enemy, dragging along their victims. This ability is a pass through skillshot that will tag all enemies hit for up to 3 seconds. If Yzariel reactivates it, enemies within 800 range of the selected target will be pulled up to 400 units towards that target. This means that even if Yzariel's targets scatter after being hit by his E, he can clump them back together.

R - Perdition

Cost: 150 mana Cooldown: 130/100/70 seconds Range: 700 Area of Effect: 250 Width: 70 Length: 500 Missile Speed: 1500 Knockback Distance: 250 Delay: 0.4 second Yzariel summons 5 chains that shoot forward, piercing enemies they pass through, dragging them along for a short distance, dealing 125/175/225 (+40% ability power) magic damage and slowing enemies hit by 30%/35%/40% for 1 second. The chains all converge towards the same point and all 5 will pierce enemies in this area, dealing 250/350/450 (+80% ability power) magic damage and stunning enemies hit for 1.5 second.

When Yzariel casts Perdition, 5 portals appear and shortly after that chains shoot out of those portals. The chains all converge towards 1 area before they disappear. So when Yzariel uses this ability, he selects an area of effect. 5 portals appear at a set distance from the area of effect and chains shoot out of the portals after a 0.4 second delay. Over the course of 0.33 second, the chains go towards the selected area. At this point, enemies inside the selected area take damage and are stunned. Note that the area of effect is very small and that the total delay is 0.73 second, which is enormous. So, your best bet is to try to hit someone with a chain and drag them into the the area of effect. If a unit is hit by a chain and then dragged into the area of effect, it takes a total of 250/350/450 (+80% ability power) magic damage. It does not take the full damage from both effects.

This ability might be a bit hard to visualize so, here, have... whatever this is...

I like what you have going here!

constructive criticism: In My Opinion,

So he is like Kassadin is to the void, only applied to the shadow isles in a way?

Since Yzariel is royalty and a powerful mage, could they use thresh in the lore to chain him? This would make him a big enemy to thresh and givee the whole torture but not killed vibe.

Also in the lore, did you mean to phrase it, or, could it be phrased that "the chains drained his energy yes, but after so long they became one with himself and his magic due to them constantly feeding off of his magic?" (possibly a cool approach)

I really like the concept you got here for Yzariel's. Now I wish i could only surpries you and say, " i'm from rito and i love this idea, and ill make this champ and you willl see him in a month i think he is amazing" ( well im not, just another player sorry)

I hope the best for you and Yzariel and any other champs you may come up with!

(Morde being the ruined king, i never knew that... thats a cool idea!)
