[Feature Request] Poll Viewing (forfeit your ability to vote in the poll)
Pretty much title. For an example of what I'm talking about, I made a poll with a "I just want to see the poll results" option here. My suggestion would work like this - after every poll, there would be an option where you surrender your right to vote in the poll, in exchange for seeing the results.
It allows people to see the results if they don't care about the poll, without polluting its results, while preventing people from checking what the responses are before they vote. An early rebuttal to people who say that voting to see the results is a small % of total votes: As of right now, 4/16 votes in the poll are just to see the results. These are people who might normally be voting in the poll just to see the results, and thereby polluting the results with votes of people who don't really care.
So, having discussed this more (credit where credit is due: with Daen), I've come to the following conclusion:
- If this option were implemented, the people who vote only to see the answer, would probably opt out of voting entirely.
- This means you've got fewer people voting in polls.
- So, what's worse, people not voting, or people voting just to see the results? That depends...
- If people voting just for the results are just randomly picking an option, that's worse.
- If people voting just for the results are actually thinking about their vote, it's better to force them to vote, because it forces them to engage with the content, which is a good thing.
We can't really know how people vote without data, so we're at a standstill here.
@Boards team (or anyone else), know of any research on this subject?
