Can we stop making duplicate threads already?

Hyrum Graff··3 votes·879 views

If there's already one, or two, or three, or four, or *five *Sona threads on the main page, can we just upvote and comment on one of them, or maybe two if one brings something new to the discussion, instead of spamming the home page with duplicates?

To an extent I agree, but people like explaining their views in different ways and the OP is generally the most visible post on a given thread. Until there is more incentive to post on an already existing thread rather than make your own, this will continue to be a fact of life on forums.

Which begs the question, is there a way to organically incentivize posting on a pre-existing thread rather than creating your own?

Some kind of karma system, I suppose.

The point is, Riot doesn't look at one post complaining about something they did, so we need numbers to prove that we don't like it. Yes, they still ignore it.

But one thread with 300 upvotes is going to prove your point so much better than 5 threads with 80 upvotes each.

Bee Movie 20071 votes

Nope, riot will ignore it unless it is spammed and they have to deal with the spam (deleting it). So they will see the problem, if only 1 person says it, it doesnt draw any attention.

Hyrum Graff1 votes

If one person says it and 300 people upvote it, it means 301 people agree with it.

If 5 people say it, and the same 80 people upvote every thread, it means 85 people agree with it (actually, just 81 because the other 4 OPs are included in the 80 upvotes).

Seeing 5 threads may feel more impactful to you as someone reading them, but Riot doesn't, or shouldn't, make decisions that way.

But five threads with 300 upvotes each is going to prove it -moreso- because you have lots of dedication and players who really want to see something and are obviously induced into their fervor for a reason.

Except, when there's 5 threads with 80 upvotes I'm going to find the best one, upvote it, and downvote all the others. Because I don't half of my front page to be the same thread.

Showing you can upvote 5 threads where 3 of them have 20 words between them doesn't prove anything.

I'd personally love to see half my front page of Gameplay & Balance to be the on the same Champion.

Why?

[Warning: The below is entirely hypothetical and not necessarily an actual point. Probably.]

Because it should mean that each different thread is tackling a different aspect of the champion--for example with Sona, I personally really miss her old Auras and think her new ones are pathetic excuses for 'auras'. They're... really not auras except technically. They have no permanence.

But somebody else (rightfully) should bring up that her current effects are more easily noticed-- and both allies and enemies can learn from them and understand, instead of simply thinking that they weren't doing as well as they thought they were.

But, on a completely different note, Sona's Aria of Perseverance is unable to make the 'clutch heals' that it was advertised to be now able to do in exchange for losing how good it was at topping off somebody's Health. Well, that's balance on Sona's W, which is a completely different discussion than gameplay on Sona overall. Therefore, separate thread.

Somebody else could think that the problem lies in some lost cadence due to her abilities all having different cooldowns now. Well, that's a bit of both, gameplay and balance, but it doesn't have anything to do with the previous two threads.

Somebody else could think that the real problem is in Power Chord's effects, one in particular. That's still completely different and doesn't belong in any of the above threads.

While, eventually, these should be condensed?

They're all separate points of discussion that are unrelated to one another except via Sona.

Apologies, I'm not sure how I missed replying to this.

In the case where each new thread is contributing something new and interesting to the discussion, as per example, I totally agree with you. In the case where 4 of the 5 threads are different ways to rephrase the same 10 words, I just don't think there's a lot of merit to having more posts for the sake of more posts.

:V I agree with this as well.

Almost every thread was actually making a different set of arguments (either in OP or in comment chains) as to WHY said Sona nerfs were stupid; so to me they all had value.

or at least all the ones that I remember, I might be merging threads in my memory because of their age. :V

I Agree, making a duplicate thread should loose you your thread creation privileges for a day, apply the same logic you do to a game, these people who spam endless threads on the same subject make the boards a pain,

None, i was practicing what i preach by spending 10 seconds looking for an existing thread,

Well, the core of the problem here is that there's no way to aggregate content. Necroing has its own downside: conversation is old and stale and complete, making it hard to jump in.

My crack at it was some form of versioning, where if I want to necro a thread, instead I compose a new thread (which may or may not be a copypasta of the old one) and call it a new version of an old thread. For all intents and purposes it works just like a new thread, but there's a series of tabs at the top where I can easily look back at previous versions. On boards home pages, all versions only appear once, under whichever version ranks the highest for a given sorting type is the only one to appear.

http://i.imgur.com/QmszMCd.png

Ex: Take a 3-version thread:

v1 is 1 month old and has 1k upvotes v2 is 5 days old and has 250 upvotes v3 is 1 day old and has no upvotes.

If you sort by 'Best' version 1 appears and v2 and v3 do not. If you sort by 'Hot,' v2 appears but v1 and v3 don't. If you sort by 'new' v3 appears but not v1 or v2.

This prevents clogging the home page up with tons of dupe threads, but allows old threads to be "necro'd" by creating a new version with more visibility, while also providing a fresh slate for discussion.

Essentially each version acts like a brand new comment section, but with the same OP? I like it! Things would get more complicated if someone replied to a comment instead of the OP though.

Brand new comment section and brand new OP.

If the original poster wants, they can opt to have the brand new OP be the same as the old OP, if it's still relevant. I'd guess most people would opt for having a similar, but edited, OP.

Thanotos Omega1 votes

I would just have the forums run a search on threads looking for ones with lots of matches in the name and first post provide a list ask you to check and make sure your aren't making a dupe thread, if you think your thread is different enough you create it, with an understanding that you will loose your thread creation privileges for 24 hours and have the thread deleted if it's found to be a dupe,

The problem is that they drop off the main page too quick. So most people don't see that a thread is already going.
