Here's an example of where it would be useful to have a comment be linked to an OP.

######Mods: this is in the right place, it's part of a Boards feature discussion that Daen and I were having on pvp.net a couple days ago.

The rest of you: This is an idea of mine in progress - I'll make a post explaining it for real when it's fully fleshed out.

tl;dr, the ability to make a comment into its own OP, with the ability to link upvotes, replies, etc.

I must have missed this convo, what exactly is meant by "linked"? Kind of like being a featured comment or having their vis score contributing to the OP?

well it's between him and Daen so it's understandable that we don't know. But now I'm curious! (and I can't get to the client from where I am right now, I'm constantly moving around to different wi-fi spots, undergrad research)

Can you update this post as you have more information as opposed to making a new one? I'm curious to know what the discussion is about and not all forum members can readily get onto the client.

Right so, the discussion we had in communityplatform was around the concept of allowing users to automatically create a new thread using the text from a comment posted in a different thread. The comment would either be condensed into a link to the new OP or have the link included on the comment somewhere.

The main conversation centered around these questions:

Is this feature something that would be used enough to warrant development time?
What is the potential for abuse, and do the positives outweigh the negatives?

#Pros

Allows users to more easily distribute content
Streamlines the process of creating a new thread based upon a topic in a different thread

#Cons

Development time
Possibly incentivizes thread hijacking

It's an interesting idea, but I wonder about the actual gains with it, largely because isn't this kind of exactly what discussion view is? Yes visibility score and time posted can work against your "sub-thread" in discussion but wouldn't more support for discussion comments (influence on the main OP's vis score, ways to highlight active threads, etc.) accomplish the same thing without throwing them back to the main list?

Essentially, what does this idea accomplish that the current discussion view does not? Not trying to shut the idea down, legitimately curious.

My linked post is an example of where this would be useful.

I replied to a thread (linked in my link) with something long and thought-out, that I feel deserves more visibility than it would get as a comment.
I want to post it as a comment
I also want to post it as an OP
I don't want to repeat myself in a discussion in both places.
I don't want to derail the discussion too much with my comment.
- Because, for example, my post could have been a starter for a discussion about support itemization, which was not really the point of the thread where I was responding.
