I'll second this. I think that plain text formatting should look as close to the final formatting as possible.
The community beta has done some of these things really well. For example, making bullets with "*[space][text]" looks like a bulleted list in plain text, and the final post just makes it look prettier. Same with > for quotes and # for headers (although I think more #'s should make the header larger, not the other way around)
However, there are a couple areas that I think could use a bit of improvement.
- While using asterisks for bold and italics has grown on me, I can't select text and use ctrl-i or ctrl-b like I can in vBullentin, which is rather annoying.
- When I hit enter, I expect to see a new line regardless of whether there are two spaces at the end of the previous line.
- When I hit enter multiple times, I expect to see multiple line breaks, not just one. I understand that you want to limit the "200 lines of blank post" phenomenon, but I would appreciate being able to make a double line break.
- The controls at the top of the post don't let you do everything. Knowledge of how to format should not be a prerequisite for formatting. I understand that simplicity is good, but I'd like to be able to toggle between the current view (which has only bold/italics/strikethrough/quote/bullets/numbering/icons) and a more advanced view.
- I'd like to see a was to use formatting symbols as symbols rather than to control formatting. For example, I can't start a line with a hashtag unless I put it in italics.
