Dear Riot, Please require comments in order to downvote posts.

Title pretty much says it all, but this is something I strongly think your forums need. This would really cut down on the number of trolls who downvote EVERYTHING. It may not stop someone from commenting something irrelevant and then downvoting anyways, but it will at least identify those who don't have a legit reason to downvote. And I am referring to the vote for the main thread, not necessarily comments. Although, it would be nice to require them there too, but I don't think it is as important.

And I'm even confident that I will get needless downvotes on this too, even though there is no reason to. This would be such a good change.

If I see one more thread which is:

a permaban thread.
a champion needing nerfs/buffs, but only provides less than 10 words in the content.
telling riot to go fuck themselves for "stealing their money" or "imbalance game".
Lyless's threads.
Mage Update whiners who got rekt by one last game.

I'll just downvote them right away, they're not worth my time reading. But since you're trying to protest so hard, Imma give you my one upvote.

Do you not understand people on the boards aren't simply put 'trolling' but they actually do care about the game and what others say about it?

They downvote and don't need to talk in order to show their opinions, simply put. Introducing this to the boards would cause a HUGE bump rate and make good posts hard to find, the boards are fine the way they are.

If they aren't simply trolling then they could at the very least give feedback as to why they feel strongly enough to downvote. If they don't have a valid enough argument, move along and keep your opinion to yourself. "I don't like your idea" is not helpful.

There's a great number of posts that don't even deserve to be called ideas. Most (not all) of the "nerf/buff/delete [X champion/item]" threads are little more than frustrated players venting after a single bad game. Of those, the majority don't present any real supporting evidence or ideas, and are just an excuse to complain.

Those posts (and anything by Lyless...) can safely be downvoted without bothering to leave a comment.

I end up spending a fair amount of time in PB&M posts whenever they show up in my "Recent" sorting. I leave comments most of the time, but I very rarely downvote unless it's a repeat offender that refuses to understand why what they're doing is not tolerated.

Most of the time I don't think votes really do anything to help when it comes to discussing a player. If they're already being downvoted my goal is to help them understand WHY they're getting that negative feedback.

I think that is a great approach. Unfortunately, the total of up/down votes really does say something when it comes to people expressing their ideas. Not to be too touchy-feely about it, but when I share something that I genuinely feel is a good idea, (not necessarily this, more like a champion/item concept) and I check back later and see -5 in the vote total, and 0 in the comments, .. It actually feels bad. Not only that people don't like the idea, but they don't even have enough of an opinion to explain why they don't like it.

For example, based on the current total, -4, there are at least two up votes that I know of because they commented and the 1 from default, that means there have been at least 7 downvotes and only 1 comment to say why.

Up votes are generally an agreement. Downvotes mean you don't agree with what was said but to not leave a comment leaves your objection ambiguous.

And thank you for your reason. It's not that I don't want downvotes, I just want to know why.

It's possible to upvote someone but not agree with everything they. Constructive criticism isn't always sourced from disagreements, you can agree but offer suggestions for refinement.

And like I said, both upvotes/downvotes have their sheep mentality. There's no point in singling one out.

True, and I wouldn't be opposed to it being required for both, but I don't think it would be as useful in some cases for upvotes because it is possible that someone agree 100% and feels that no comment is necessary.

Like I said, I don't feel as though my ideas are above criticism. In fact, I know they aren't, but I want to hear them. I think it's only fair that if someone feels they can smash my ideas into oblivon, I should at least get to hear what they don't like about them. Maybe my idea is simply flawed and I can fix it. Maybe there was something I left out or didn't explain properly. ...

Because "I don't like it" isn't helpful. You're absolutely right about people currently having zero accountability for their vote. As you said, they don't even need to look at a post to get a vote. How is that right?!?! Why should my idea be downvoted into obscurity because they want to be a troll? And if they are required to at least say something, and what they say is anything like what you suggested before, then I at least know that they don't have a valid argument. It would be really great if there was some way for Riot to track the people who did that as well and maybe even take away their ability to vote at all in my opinion, but I am not trying to take away people's ability to do that.

I really just want to know why my ideas are being downvoted. Is that really a bad thing to ask for?

Except you still haven't addressed the issue whatsoever. You say that you wouldn't care if people downvoted and put ladf, but you care that people downvote without saying a thing. It doesn't make sense.

No, it does make sense, because then I would have 11 downvotes and 11 comments. Maybe 5 would be valid and 6 would be absolute bullshit. I would know that only 5 of those downvotes are even relevant and they would provide me with some information as to why they didn't like my idea. Unfortunately, from an outside perspective, my post still wouldn't get any real attention, but it helps me. If someone actually bothered enough to look and read the comments at that point they would also know that I have got a lot of unduly negative votes. Hell, if a Riot employee were to stop by (although unlikely with a -11) they would see that those people are just being trolls, and if there were such a thing as a punishment for such things, they could drop the hammer on them. If this were to ultimately discourage people from even downvoting if they had nothing to say GREAT! Mission accomplished!

I wouldn't care because I would KNOW they are being trolls. Without a comment, I don't know if someone is simply being a troll or if they have an actual opinion, or what it is.
