In addition to an upvote/downvote button? 'Like/dislike' would function something like facebook - it would sit at the bottom of each post/comment, and would not be used for sorting.
Would you vote differently if there were like and dislike button attached to each post as well?

Anyway, I think the idea has some merit but runs into the danger of likes overriding voting in popularity. I can see a lot of people just liking and not bothering to vote as well. We already have bit of a drought in that regard currently, so imho definitely not at this moment but that may change later as the CB base grows.
On the actual effect, I know I would still vote. An idea paired with this may be to also try to get the vote score's name stuck as "visibility score", I think the internet's precedent for voting skew the actual design intent of the voting system and I'm kinda trying to think of intuitive ways to steer the user base towards the right frame of mind. Reinforcing the vote's control of visibility and adding in likes for control of overall approval might be a step in the rigt direction.

Visibility is based largely on upvotes and downvotes.
My thought was, if we had a separate 'like' feature, people might realize that they shouldn't be voting based on whether they like a post, they should be using 'like' for that instead, and use votes to control visibility.
MajorPain91 votesYou have to much faith in the actual poster. If someone is down voting a thread already, they will only use the secondary option to do the same. Many people have already been on Reddit, and know how it is "supposed" to work, it still does nothing to stop the circle jerking. This system will always be based off of a popularity contest.

Whether it be repetitive bumping or botting 15 burn accounts and mass-voting, that's not a problem with the system it's a problem with the average person on the internet. A system can mitigate it by limiting the capacity of impact of a single user, like imagining an upvote like a single-use bump as Hyrum said elsewhere, but will never eliminate it.
