New ordering option!

Sir ArmaMalum··2 votes·3,898 views

Hey guys, if you haven't noticed there's a new ordering option up, which acts similarly to vBulletin's bump sorting from what I can tell.

/Discuss

My $0.02 is that if this new option is named "Hot" and the current "Hot" option is re-named to "Trending" that would be good, but that' just me nitpicking really.

You mean the recently responded sorting? I think it's a good addition to see which discussions are still alive, though I don't know what it does too differently than the "Hot" sorting; I agree they could be combined in some way (in case this is what you're talking about)

I'm not too much of a fan of combining the two options I think their both stronger as separate options.

Hot specifically shows an active thread based on votes, so a post with a lot of upvotes will rise to the top but its score will also decay over time as it gets older. Recently replied, as far as I can tell, sorts simply by whatever post was replied to chronologically.

oh, does "Hot" only sort based on votes? I was sure it sorted based on replies; I see a lot of "Hot" threads with only one upvote (that it starts with) but has a bunch of comments (most of my threads are like this; no one agrees with me/thinks my content is worthy, but plenty will argue with me XD)

It sorts (I am about 90% or so sure) off of the votes of said comments if the comments have more votes than the OP. I might be wrong on the specific, but I do know it's based off of the votes of comments and not the activity

interesting, thanks!

It currently factors in votes on the OP, and replies to the OP/Total # comments. it does not factor in votes on the comments.

That may change over time.

Ah ok, ty for the clarification! :)

From my understanding Hot is essentially "this thread is active overall", whereas Recently Replied is "this thread is active right now". Hot is a broader picture, Recently Replied is a snapshot.

Yea, I think that's what it is; I was just saying that they might be able to combine, since "Thread is active" is sort of an umbrella term. I personally find that "Hot" sorts 'meaningfully active' threads, as oppose to every single response that may or may not be interesting. Perhaps just a personal bias, though.

Hot should at some point be both meaningfully active and highly relevant. Recently replied is just anything active. It's basically the same as bumping from the forums. Any time anywhere in the discussion a new comment is made - it bumps the discussion to the top of that list.

Thanks for the clarification, Pendragon!

You mean recently replied? Does it work for self bumps?

Edit: yes it does. Cool.

Yup, was coming back here to confirm as well. :)
