Please clarify your stance on 'Necroing' and 'BEST' threads

I just got warned for posting in an 'old' thread and got this explanation:

"Please make sure to keep an eye out on the date of a discussion and refrain from necroing. If you are having issues or in a similar instance of the discussion, feel free to create a new one to get eyes on it!"

The reason I posted: when I go to Story, Art, & Sound board threads get sorted by "Best" by default. I see juicy discussions on the FRONT PAGE and I want to join and then I get warned for necroing. What's the point of having the feature to sort them by "Best" if it's there only to provoke people to post so they can get punished? Something is seriously wrong with the current system.

Why sort by best instead of recent? I honestly detest the reddit format and have my settings on chronological view instead aka traditional posting board format.

Ok, I just checked what thread you necro'd. I remember it quite well. It was started over a year ago. Any wonder you got in trouble. The last post was around 7 months ago. I think it's common sense that if a topic is dead for that long not to revive it.

Last post wasn't 7 months ago, there was actually quite a lot of recent posts there, they were just all cleaned up by moderators along with mine. And I didn't use sorting by "BEST", it was set by default. I just don't know why have that feature if all it does is gets you in trouble. What's the point? Is that an intentional trap? Sorting by "BEST" is even listed at the FIRST option. #WHY?

This was the last post before you necro'd the thread. If you simply would change the view from discussion mode to chronological you would see that. After your post which was roughly 24 hours ago, a few people posted.

It's not a trap. It's called common sense. You can see the date on the original thread. August 2015. A year ago. It's nothing to get worked up about. They simply deleted your post. In the future be more mindful of how old threads are. It's much easier to simply switch it to recent if you insist on leaving it in the default discussion view.

If it's not a trap, what is it? Why does it exist? Why is the FIRST and DEFAULT option to sort the threads? I open a forum and by default I see a list of threads with catchy clickbaity titles that will get me punished if I post in them. This is clearly a trap. They not "simply deleted my post". I got an actual warning as if I did something really bad. And next warning will get me a temporary ban. Which is awesome considering that it's their boards that chose to show me their "BEST" threads when I decided to open a certain section of the boards.

No one is tracking that thread anymore. Anything you add will be out of context (time wise).

It's a standard practice on websites in general. Just pulling examples from all over: youtube, yelp, imgur, and amazon all sort by best as default. If you were capable of reading through that entire thread, why were you not able to notice the age of the thread? Fiora's update was long ago. It's definitely not current news nor talked about regularly.

You've been active on the forums long enough to honestly know better. I don't know what else to say. The idea that necroing old threads is a bad habit stems back over two decades in the internet's infancy. This is nothing new. Pay better attention.

In all this are you incapable of admitting that you simply weren't paying attention to the dates of the thread? Why would you want to talk about a dead subject? Best in a reddit like format only means that a lot of people upvoted it and had multiple pages of responses. Not that it's a current hot topic.

I've seen people's posts deleted for necroing posting on here often enough. I've also seen it on many forums through the years. Riot's moderation team has certain standards that they adhere to. While some could be contested, this one is most definitely not outlandish. It's unfortunate that you lacked self awareness but i'd like to believe from now on you'll pay more thorough attention.

Furthermore I just turned my forum settings to default and checked the Story, Art, & Sound sub forum. It defaults to NEW not best.

Why is this something that needs to be admitted? You're right, it is common practice that you cannot post in old threads on other platforms. But you literally CAN NOT post in them. They don't just sit there, allowing you to post in them, just so they can punish you for doing it.

I've seen people's posts deleted for necroing posting on here often enough. I've also seen it on many forums through the years. Riot's moderation team has certain standards that they adhere to. While some could be contested, this one is most definitely not outlandish. It's unfortunate that you lacked self awareness but i'd like to believe from now on you'll pay more thorough attention.

Look at reddit, They don't like necroing, they archive posts automatically, so no one can post in them. Having them just lying there, available to best posted in is not what you can describe as "having certain standards". I really think that you're here to play advocate and not really to have a constructive discussion, because this is blatantly wrong, considering that getting warned leads to getting banned and people do not deserve to be banned for necroing threads after being led to them by the boards' mechanism.

I simply am an advocate for people taking responsibilities for their actions. Had this happened to me i'd have chastised myself, and become more vigilant in the future to not repeat such a careless error again. This is user error.

Upon your suggestion I myself opened up a new chrome window in incognito mode. Interestingly enough it shows Hot. It does not default to best or new. Your entire argument is based on it defaulting to best. When logged in I am getting New. When not, I am getting Hot. So I am unsure how you are getting best listed by default.

I am asking Riot to clarify their policy on the subject and/or possibly fix it so people do not get banned because of this. There is still no point in having the ability to sort threads by best if it's not encouraged to post in them. It still doesn't make sense, give or take. There is no consistency when it comes to necroing. Sometimes it is allowed, sometimes it isn't. It happens on a daily basis and there is a boards mechanic in place that leads you to a place literally filled with a bunch of threads that you're not allowed to post in, even thought it doesn't say anywhere that you're supposed only to read them, but not post in them.

I've wasted neither of our times. You're sitting on a posting board. That is you already spending your time frivolously. I believe in a principle and withheld it. That's time well spent for me.

There is no reset button. I simply put it back to discussion view and then went to the subforum. Discussion view is their default mode. I prefer the traditional view that chronological provides. Do you use FEK or any other mod specifically for the forum itself? I'm using no mods.

The consistency would be the 7 month gap between the last post and yours. Even those were basically endless bumps to an old discussion. The bulk of the content was from the initial time a year ago.

Having the ability to sort by best is not the issue. Some may want to see the most popular all time posts. As for auto-locking after a predetermined amount of time, that may or may not be available within the forum software. If it's not, it would require moderators to systemically do it by hand. To be frank, that sounds like a lot of work. This is by no means a rare occurrence, but it's also not on a constant basis.

If you were warned for something recently, your next warning can result in a more severe punishment. If you already received your "severe" punishment, your next "severe" punishment can be even more serious, up to a permaban. And it comes to the fact that your last strike can happen to be for a silly thing like this one. So every warning counts. On GD, we're like a playground for the rule formation, really. And very often we wake up to a new ruleset that leads to a massacre. We are given second chances, but I would prefer not to waste it on non-issues like this one. This really feels like a forced punishment.

I think we found out why we're having differing results then if you're using FEK.

While i've not gone through any punishments from the moderation team, i'm aware of how it works, but thanks for taking the time to explain regardless. I've been a regular lurker of the boards, as well as GD for years. I just sporadically post. I read far more than i'll ever write. I do keep up on the "interesting" dynamic between GD and the mods.

While it's a simple idea (in theory), no idea if it'll get implemented in some capacity. It's been pretty hit and miss what the moderation team listens to and changes.
