a reformed flamer's guide to not getting flamed. "or your teammates"
this post may sound like victim blaming "god i hate that term" but generally speaking. people dont flame in chat without a reason. even 1 death isnt usually going to cause someone to flame you. generally. when people get flamed. its because either
a. you refuse to follow any sort of advice or instructions b. you chase kills. particularly when behind, c. you refuse to communicate with your team. d. someone tries to give you advice such as farm under turret, and you jump down their throat with "stfu", or some variation e. "its just flex" "its just bronze" "its just norms" f. "gg" "im done" "ff15" g. provoking the tilted player, either through chat or gameplay h. you yourself are causing a distraction in chat. and refuse to stop typing no matter how nicely its worded i. picking completely off the wall off meta. with zero regard for teamcomp or consent from your teammates.
here are my general guidelines for avoiding flame
- DO NOT FUEL THE FIRE. if someone else is being negative or pessimistic. as tempting as it is. dont flame them back. dont passive aggressively troll them or try to rile them up more so they get banned. dont try to "teach them a lesson" JUST DONT
- COMMUNICATE WITH YOUR TEAM. ping often. use voice comms if linked in lobby. and dont be afraid of the chat. silence can be even more tilt inducing then typing too much. dont wait for people to already be pissed off at you to finally say something the one exception to this rule is if you're coming off a 14 day ban. in which case you should be muting all.
- PLAY TO WIN. this is especially true for ranked. one of the fastest ways to piss people off is by dicking around and not making any attempt to play seriously
- WHEN PLAYING OFF META, HAVE A LEGITIMATE STRATEGY. when nick foles ran the philly special in the superbowl. the eagles offense knew exactly what he was doing and how to set it up. he didnt just randomly decide to run a trick play without asking the rest of the team https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_XmhBaUdges think of playing off meta as like running a gadget play in football.
- LEARN WHEN TO SHUT UP. if people are asking you to stop typing. at best. youre tilting them. at worse. you're tilting your whole team. whatever you have to say isnt worth starting a chat war
- DONT BE HOSTILE. there is nothing wrong with someone asking you to farm under tower. it definitely doesnt warrant a "stfu"
- CORRECT YOUR MISTAKES if youre losing lane. DO NOT. keep fighting the enemy laner trying to get kills. play passive. avoid dying more then you already have.
- OBJECTIVES ARE MORE IMPORTANT THEN KILLS. always focus objectives if you can help it. kills are great. but objectives win games
