my unpopular opinion on riot's report system

scazzman··5 votes·884 views

I feel that under the current system. riot actually ENCOURAGES trolling. so long as it's not done through chat. and the person isn't just outright feeding and sets the tone for a VERY dangerous type of griefing. REPORT BAITING. and here is how it encourages it

  • asking for reports, or even just saying "please stop insulting me or i will report you" can get you banned
  • report weight is unfair to players trapped in low elo who are reporting every other game. because it will eventually tick down. *not because theyre falsely reporting. but because there are just that many trolls. if false reports are truly thrown out the window. why does report weight even exist?
  • while false reports in and of themselves wont get you punished they make it harder to get away with "that 1 bad game" because im pretty sure they still tack onto your record. and will trigger your account for review faster if you actually get a "real" report. *players now stand to lose more than just a few games without allchat. with retroactive punishments like losing ranked rewards. or hextech chests. and with the new strike system in place. players who are easily goaded into being toxic. they can actually get permabanned now. which used to be reserved only for people who truly deserved it. such as hardcore trolls. hatespeech, and death threats. now. ANYONE can be permabanned as long as they they get reported enough. or get a string of bad games coming off a ban
  • some players may have mental health issues preventing them from simply "muting and not typing" many of whom use gaming as an escape from real world issues. and report baiters tend to identify and seek out these types of players. because they know they are the ones who are likely to react. many of whom would WELCOME being chat restricted every game if they didnt have to worry about getting actually banned due to a troll. *the players who can't simply ignore are "trapped" in a game with these types of trolls picking up more and more reportable chat logs the longer the game progresses. because they will deny any attempt to surrender. often with a duo. and if the person afks they're breaking the rules anyway and get banned for afk instead of verbal abuse or are forced to eat a queue dodge every time they see it in lobby. and that's IF they start in pregame and dont wait for it to be too late

asking for reports, or even just saying "please stop insulting me or i will report you" can get you banned

Alternatively, you could simply just say "please stop insulting me". It accomplishes the same thing, but without the report threat.

report weight is unfair to players trapped in low elo who are reporting every other game. because it will eventually tick down. *not because theyre falsely reporting. but because there are just that many trolls. if false reports are truly thrown out the window. why does report weight even exist?

Report weight only devalues a player's reports if he/she is consistently falsely reporting. If a player happens to report 9 people in a game, and all 9 of them were then punished, that player's report weight would not fall.

while false reports in and of themselves wont get you punished they make it harder to get away with "that 1 bad game" because im pretty sure they still tack onto your record

ANYONE can be permabanned as long as they they get reported enough.

This is a bit hyperbolic, a player will only be permanently banned if he/she exhibits enough toxicity to warrant the punishment. Being goaded into being toxic is still being toxic regardless of the origin, and it's why it's treated similarly. Saying "go kill yourself" is the same regardless of whether you say it to a normal player or in response to a troll.

some players may have mental health issues preventing them from simply "muting and not typing" many of whom use gaming as an escape from real world issues... many of whom would WELCOME being chat restricted every game if they didnt have to worry about getting actually banned due to a troll.

  1. If a player has mental health issues that are so severe they manifest themselves as ruining other players' experiences, it's up to that player to receive the help he/she needs.

  2. It's possible to unbind keys, so these players can simply unbind their enter key so that they would be functionally chat restricted.

the players who can't simply ignore are "trapped" in a game with these types of trolls

Which players are unable to simply ignore, and is there something Riot could be doing to help that not be the case?

i dont know. maybe a manual chat restriction that wouldnt be able to be turned off until after the game. or a way to afk without punishment in these types of circumastances "im being taunted to the point i cant simply ignore but im not allowed to walk away" also. many of these players start off just with light insults or just being passive aggressive. and and slowly escalate. and by the time you realize they're taunting you. you're already riled up. and muting wont make a difference. you already flamed. OR if you mute them at the 1st hint of toxicity. they resort to feeding. and usually JUST the lane of the person they are trying to get banned

I can't imagine a scenario where a player, with no possible threat of physical violence, would be not allowed to walk away from a verbal altercation. If being taunted so badly that it can't be ignored, you can simply...mute the person taunting you and report that player after the game. Disaster averted.

but would the manual chat restriction be something that would be doable in a future patch? unbinding the enter key. or dragging the chat off screen isnt doable because you can just switch it back if you want to start typing again. also. if they figure out you've muted them they resort to trolling to get the same result

One of the reasons Riot doesn't want to do manual chat restrictions is that it basically intentionally gimps your team's communication. What if, for example, I decide I want to go with a manual restriction but I really need to mention something useful to the game? I can't turn it off, so I'm stuck frantically pinging and hoping someone gets the idea.

Chat restrictions are effective, but they are also potentially detrimental to the rest of the team due to the very limitations that make them work. A permanent chat restriction validated by Riot could perpetuate this, and it's also still possible to flame your teammates while under a restriction regardless.

its no different than non english speakers playing on NA server. which for some reason isn't against the rules

The difference is that a non-English speaker on the NA server isn't intentionally choosing to limit his/her chat, just happens to be how the person reads chat.

which for some reason isn't against the rules

Belize - English, Yucatec, Kekchi, Carib Canada - English, French, Cree, Ojibwa, Inupik, Micmac, Naskapi, Chipewyan, Mohawk, Assiniboin, Blackfoot Costa Rica - Spanish, Bribri, Cabecar Cuba - Spanish Dominica - English Dominican Republic - Spanish El Salvador - Spanish

etc.

See my point? There are tons of languages other than English that are spoken in North America, which is why it's not against the rules to speak languages other than English.

"If something cant be ignored, you can simply mute the person".. Doesnt muting equal ignoring? ._.

MasterSomething1 votes

Ignoring is letting a dog speak as loud as he wants, but you aren't doing anything about it. Muting is where you put earplugs in your ears so you cannot hear the dog.

I agree with this to an extent. The problem I see is this; to truly have someone punished, a majority of the players would need to report a single person and/or they must consistently receive reports from a diverse group. Also, as far as trolling goes, leave it in normals and it shouldn't be worth the report. The problem I see is DynamicQ allowing for a group of players to completely flame one person on their own team and then only one player maybe receiving a report from the other team, thus allowing them to continue flaming without punishment. As far as the "mental health" thing goes, this is an online game with communication integrated (like many if not all online games today). This just simply cannot be argued because this is an assumed risk by lugging in and signing the agreement every patch. Although there very well may be people like that, they must learn to use the mute button or not play at ALL.

No. Trolling is trolling regardless of the queue it happens in, there is no reason it should be acceptable to troll people in normal games, ARAMs, TT, etc.

I disagree, I had a very fun game double jungling with a rengar as thresh. No, I did not take it into ranked where people gambled precious LP. I had a great time trying to win with an idea that was very off meta.

Although this video is Rengar + Thresh bot lane, they did take it into ranked, and WON.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HB0Rj_Zuh2w

My point is this, "trolling" is coined by anything that is off meta, or a new and different way to play the game.

If you are doing something to throw the game, I believe this as not "trolling" but "assisting the other team", which IS a punishable offense.

Also another example. When teemo sits there and watches you die twice then proceeds to fight after the fact, If you fight again and expect the teemo to have a change of heart midway through the game, Id have to call you stupid. Not only is the teemo just simply using their kit, they're getting a kick out of you continually throwing yourself at the enemy. If it gets bad enough, AFK then, they trolled, they did not go into that game with the mentality to win, they went to try something NEW and have FUN.

Like I said, keep that out of ranked and it should not be a punishable offense.

In picking that double jungle Rengar Thresh combo, were you ignoring the objections of your Rengar player and doing it anyway? If not, you weren't trolling.

My point is this, "trolling" is coined by anything that is off meta, or a new and different way to play the game.

This is an incorrect coining of the term, though I've definitely seen it used this way (wrong). There is absolutely nothing wrong with going off meta, but people sometimes use "going off meta" as an excuse to ignore their team or troll them. It's an important distinction.

Also another example. I'd consider this trolling. The Teemo player is clearly just screwing with the other player, intentionally letting him/her die and getting a kick out of watching the struggle.

If it gets bad enough, AFK then, they trolled, they did not go into that game with the mentality to win, they went to try something NEW and have FUN.

That is basically Riot's textbook definition for getting yourself reported. Playing without the intent to win is something very few players enjoy, so this is essentially only OK to do if it's with a full premade or everyone on your team is fine with it.

Monkey With Guns1 votes

No, I was not disagreeing with the rengar, but I did disagree with random jhin not lane and the dynamic queue visuals clear putting the support in the bottom lane. As far as getting yourself reported, going unto a game with a mentality other than winning is not against the summoner codes therefore not a reportable offense. Although going against the concept of a "game" according to the code it is not punishable.

I do consider the teemo a troll, but expecting him to help after not helping the entire game would be far fetched.

I hate people who afk on purpose or accidentally it cost my lp that i earn with hard effort i think riot should make a system where if u have a afk and u lose the game only the one who afked would loose lp cause it not faire u try your best u sweat of the hard tries just to make ur team lead forwards and someone just says hey gank me im on0/2 ok im done bye afk like what the heck rito pls

or what about giving people a certain amount of "dodge or afk tokens" per week basically. letting people dodge or afk without penalty "except for the loss" but only for 5 or 6 games per week

If we assume that there are 50,000,000 concurrent players per day, and that each player uses 0.8 dodges per day (5.6 per week), that's a grand total of 40,000,000 dodges per day. This means that anywhere between 4,000,000 and 40,000,000 games daily are just wasted time because of people dodging for free. Not an ideal atmosphere.

it's also "not an ideal atmosphere" when players are being held hostage for a minimum of 20 minutes by a troll. and thats IF the troll doesnt have a duo with him stalling surrender votes
