Offense : the action of attacking someone or something.

Defense : the action of defending from or resisting attack.

when somebody atacks you in the game via "mean words on the internet", you have two options: Offense and defense

offense is when you respond to the slurs with slurs of your own, add gas to the fire and make matters worse

defense is when you IGNORE the one flaming you and put up a shield by muting him in order to protect yourself from his words. THAT is what "defense" is!!!

i don't understand why this is so hard to comprehend?!?...

What baffles me, in addition to your point, is that folks seem to forget the first rule about trolls: Don't feed trolls.

Going on the offensive, as you've defined, is exactly what a troll is hoping to provoke in their victim. So not only does it hurt the morale and flow of communication in the game, but it's often giving the offending player exactly what they wanted. Flaming trolls is rewarding trolls.

""The best defense is a good offense" is an adage that has been applied to many fields of endeavor, including games and military combat. It is also known as the strategic offensive principle of war. Generally, the idea is that proactivity (a strong offensive action) instead of a passive attitude will preoccupy the opposition and ultimately hinder its ability to mount an opposing counterattack, leading to a strategic advantage." Alot of that comes from the US' point of view of "Right to stand your ground", where if people come into your home and steal stuff, you are allowed to shoot them to defend yourself.

Then again, what the heck do I know about US' gun rules. I'm Canadian.
