Hey everyone,

Earlier today we shipped some code for ping muting to PBE. We'll be turning it on for testing on PBE in the next few days, and hope to have it live around the world within just a couple patches. This is a new button we're adding to the tab menu. It'll axe standard, smart, and HUD pings from the player you ping mute.

The mute button that's already in the game is not moving or changing at all. It mutes chat, and extracurricular animations and emotes. The idea is to give everyone granular mute controls.

Because a good portion of the community have been abusing pings for a long time now and using them for anything but their intended function. The 'enemy missing' ping has basically become a raging tool at this point.

If someone doesn't abuse pings like "enemy missing", there is no need to ping mute them. Thus their real "enemy missings" would still be seen and heard. On the other hand if you aren't able to ping mute someone abusing "enemy missing" then you won't be able to detect the real "enemy missing" from your other team mates from under the noise of the abuser. Ping mute is necessary for teamwork. Thank you Riot.

when doing this i believe you should have it alert you that the person on your team has muted your pings so that if you were actually trying to be helpful but they're tilted you won't be wasting your time on pinging information to that person.

Now I can actually do team work things like pushing an ally's lane and get the enemy tower 10 minutes into the game without getting bombarded with pings then get comments like "Ziggs WTF".

Yes people apparently dont like allies that can one shot towers to. Its like they don't like winning the game or something. strange isn't it?

If I ping mute someone, will they be able to see my pings? Or does it work like chat mute, where they can't see my chat, and I can't see their?

Muting someone in the chat doesn't stop them from seeing your chats. You just stop seeing theirs. This will work the same way, they still see your pings you don't see theirs

How will anyone communicate objectives etc then, if we are allowed now to completely mute pings and chat?

Or will this only mute the pings but they are still visible?

Let me iterate;

#I'm all for muting pings

I never anywhere said I was against this policy from Riot.

What I'm trying to do is bring clarity to their position of muting pings versus their position of punishing players for ignoring the team completely.

Before, you could do /mute all and it's completely acceptable, because Riot said "you have the ability to communicate via 'smart pings'".

Now they're removing the ability to have smart pings as well.

I want to make sure Riot is held accountable to themselves to not punish players anymore for any "communication failures" whatsoever once they introduce this functionality. Otherwise, it would be extremely hypocritical of them.

Preemptively muting your whole team may have consequences. That is a personal decision you are making.

"How will I press r on syndra if I use a drill press to remove my r key?" "How will I queue for a game of league if I sever my computers power cable?"

The answer is no, you can't do the thing which you completely disabled for yourself

Pings by ping muted players will not be visible, audible, nor messaged in chat. From your perspective, it will be as if those pings never happened.

It's a feature that's meant to be used selectively in cases where you feel like someone's pings aren't valuable to you, as opposed to pre-emptively against your entire team.

Generally speaking, I'd hope and expect that: A) a desire to win the match, and B) a realization that communication and teamwork are a tool in your arsenal that'll increase your odds of winning would both motivate people not to blanket remove all their channels of communication.

As a thought exercise, suppose a player does have good and/or personal reasons for muting all chats and all pings in some or all of their matches. Would this still be a problem? And if so, how would you go about addressing it while respecting a player's personal choice to do so?

I feel like one of the reasons people regularly /mute all is because they know typed comms are rarely productive (not to mention it's often inefficient gameplay to stop csing/moving to type) and because they know the potentially important stuff can be communicated via pings in a faster and clearer manner.

I'm unclear on why someone would pre-emptively pingmute someone by contrast.

That strikes me as a good reason to allow pingmuting rather than the pingmute everyone premptively, since it's rarely more than one or two players ping spamming.

But if someone is super prone to ping spam related tilt so that they do pre-emptively ping mute everyone, isn't that something they should be allowed to do, potentially for their own teams benefit? I'd rather have an unresponsive player (who if they're in habit of pingmuting everyone should be used to keeping a close eye on their minimap) playing at their best (perhaps handicapped best with no pings), than a tilted player who might just do retaliation ping spams anyway.

(And someones ping muting everyone doesn't prevent them from using their own pings, so they could still be communicating in their own output-only fashion.)

its up to your team whether they want to mute you or not. if you wanna talk about how many times you fap to pinkeypie in MLP everyday, just do it, nobody knows who you are, nobody can or will find you. just remember not to say anything with sensitive details or anything reportworthy, and dont type so much where its heavily impeding on your game. playing norms is no excuse to fuck around the whole time. if you wanna do that dont play a multiplayer game

Out of curiosity -- is it a FULL mute, or does it simply put a timer on a player's pings? I can see a good argument for allowing the occasional ping every minute or two, even from someone who uses them to harass...since it's always possible they'll have at least one ping that means something.

Either way, thanks for putting the time into developing this feature!

No. Anyone trolling with pings never used them correctly at all. Even if they did how can you tell? I've had people literally ping me INTO the enemies and laugh. Full mute.

We already have throttling on pings (roughly you can only do so many pings within a time period), so this should really be for those cases where someone is using pings so inappropriately that you don't want to see any of them. You could argue that we could be more strict on the throttling, but we don't want to inhibit legitimate usage of pings (pinging a gank path for example).

Standard, smart, and HUD pings will be axed by this button. It's a new button that'll live right beside the chat mute button that's already in the game :)

... wut? all it does it let you mute pings, so that you don't have to hear the pings from that annoying teammate. It will not affect any other teammate. How can a troll possibly use this?

EXACTLY not to mention in higher elo pings are the 1 thing you need to communicate with if you mute them you're gonna lose making it harder to climb good luck i guess

If someone is already spending them and not using them properly then they already have informed me that I can't trust any of their communication because they're using things simply to annoy me after I mute them in chat. No one can abuse this, it stops trolls who harass ping, I can climb better without 6 danger pings in my face every 2 minutes. you're dumb.
