Someone says something along the lines of "You're useless" or "gg useless support" and I respond "shut up bitch". Can saying "shut up bitch" get me in trouble?

Is the quick answer but there is more to it than that.

If the only thing you say to them is "shut up bitch" the chances of you getting into trouble is very slim {assuming your account is in good standing} that being said you get reported for it the system will mark it down as a "keep an eye on" mark, if you get enough of those you will get punished.

So if you say just that one line in one game that's not likely to get you punished, if you say more than just that in one game you are likely to be punished, if you say that one line in more than one game you are likely to be punished.

I only do it because with all the league I play. Having to hear someone complain because they can't carry their lane and the closest person takes the blame even if you're an out of mana support, recalling and he/she tower dives, etc.

You seem to be fully misinformed. There is no fucking punishment for saying god damn curse words. Shit, if there was, my ass would have been banned a long fucking time ago. I regularly say "fuck" when either I make a bad play, or I lose a close fight. Language alone is not the way you get punished. You are punished for harassing language surrounding those curse words.

There is a huge difference between

fuck

and

you fucking idiot

One is an exclamation of displeasure or disbelief. The other is a directed insult toward another player. Continuing to insult and antagonize other players is harassment. Harassment is what gets the vast majority of punished people banned.

There are certain words and phrases that are subject to a zero tolerance policy. Most often, they are slurs for certain groups of people. Riot classifies these as hate speech (and rightfully so). The phrases are extremely prejudicial, borne out of a hateful mindset, and used with the intent to inflict harm.

If you are speaking about harassing language that is not a problem with language police. That is a problem for the perpetrator(s) of the harassment. If you actually read the whole thing, it clearly delineates cursing (often called "bad language") and harassment. Because of your ambiguous statement of "language" I was forced to cover all my bases and handle all applicable connotations of the term.

There is a mute button. I am capable of pressing it. In addition, if the chat was outside of what I find acceptable, then I will also report at the end of the game.

The mute button was designed as an "emergency brake" to prevent further offensive chat from being seen. It was not created to give you the ability to continue harassing. If you post harassing chat, and someone finds it unacceptable, you get reported and punished, that doesn't mean there is too much policing. That means that your chat was found unacceptable, and Riot's automated system concurred.

If your team didn't report you, then there would have been no punishment, plain and simple.

As for throwing "ABCs" at you, I am not trying to educate you. I couldn't care less if you learn grammar, spelling, or vocabulary from me. That is how I type, and how I speak.

Im sorry man I have to disagree. Its an E brake but its also an instant solution. And you only really need it if you're super sensitive to words. Most of us don't care enough to give you validity for crying or raging, ergo we don't really need the mute but its nice. For the rest of you who can't take a "stop sucking" or "or why did you do that" without feeling super offended should be embracing that E brake and chill the f out lol

The mute does its job. Want to stop toxicity? Don't read it. Wait. Even better, mute. Now you don't have to read it and there's nothing else they can say. Technically, you can still repor them.

Now there's a system where it isn't even a human judging words, its just a collective list of what people whined the most about without context. Meanwhile trolling is easy to do as long as you don't talk or buy all tears lol

So tell me, if one problem already had a pretty viable solution (ie flaming getting muted easily) why is it necessary to make a new system that over corrects the problem and lets the other, more impactful problem (ie trolling) be easier? To me, thats catering to people who not only didnt WANT to mute, but decided they had a RIGHT to not mute and have everyone else change how they speak to protect their feelings. FFS there's even a language filter option, which has become so pointless they still filter shit XD

I can tell you, I have said, and have seen other people say, plenty of "WTF <insert champion in my game here>". The difference is when it is said, there isn't a continual berating of the player.There isn't constant harassment of the other player. People here have tried to say "I was just pointing it out to them", yet they "point it out" 10+ times. If they don't get it once, they most likely won't get it the hundred times after that. There is no purpose other than trying to make the other player feel bad. That is the part that makes it unacceptable.

When it comes to harassment, context does not matter. If you are harassing another, it doesn't matter if they were harassing you back. You committed the act. If they had equally negative chat, then they will likely be reported as well, and get a punishment according to what they said.

You, like a few others, take stands against the IFS because it doesn't yet punish non-chat related behavior. The reason chat was implemented first, is it is the simplest system to create. There are far fewer variables that need to be taken into consideration. One of those variables, context, is not considered. It has the ability to do so (they do have access to the full logs) but it was programmed to not apply anything from said context. That is because the Tribunal voted to punish in the vast majority of cases regardless the context, who started it, he-said/she-said, etc.

In addition, it isn't just a list of things that are unacceptable. The zero tolerance phrases are but one aspect of the IFS. The reasoning behind their implementation and harsh punishments was due to the fact that no matter in what context they were used, nearly all uses of said hateful phrases were punished.

Think of the mute button as ignoring someone at a restaurant. They may ignore you, but still complain to management. If you continue the behavior, they may continue to ignore you, but you will most likely get a swift kick in the ass out the door by management.

Its not the same though. At a restaurant you'd literally have to plug both ears or already be deaf to not hear their insults. In game mute literally stops the "harassment" dead in its tracks. To not use said option is an exercise in idiocy. To be so offended by what an anon stranger who maybe 12 just said to you is a CHOICE.

It can still be ok to not like harassment and think its bad--- that's why you can mute.

They took the easy approach is not an argument that negates the obvious choice on Riot's end to enlarge their net of language based punishment to cater to the sensitive. If they had left the standard at Racism, Sexism, etc, it would still be an effective system. The line isn't drawn at Racism, Sexism etc anymore: Its been drawn over any argument where someone felt offended. Even worse, if you vent at a silent troll, and they report you, then you're in trouble for venting. It doesn't matter that said player chose to type a lot, that's their choice and mute instantly ends the conflict. To take the conflict any further than words is trolling which the other players CANNOT mute or stop so that's real "harassment".

So I ask again, why are we focused on catering to the easy route of punishing anything anyone says wrong instead of worrying about actions that disrupt the game?

Riot has said, they are in progress with the system(s) to detect gameplay related offenses. Think of the chat IFS as a pilot program for other, more complex systems. The thing to remember, though, (until Riot says otherwise) is that the chat-IFS is not going away any time soon. When the gameplay detection systems are in place, I expect these forums to explode with people when it begins doing conjoined punishments for both chat and game related behavior.
