Three Real Ways to Reduce Toxicity and Improve the LoL Community

Let me break the screen barrier: This post is about you, your friends that play LoL, and the people you play against in every single one of your games. Use those games to decide whether or not these changes will be good for the LoL community.

  1. Add a mute ping option, to mute the pings of toxic players.

  2. Allow a report option in-game that also automatically mutes anyone that you report. There won't be any typing or description: just select the report category and that's it, this is to avoid people going afk just to type a report. This is especially useful because a lot of players subconsciously think using the mute button makes them weak, so they don't use it.

  3. Disable 'All' chat. It's useless for gameplay and is most commonly used to tell players to report someone and to talk shit with enemies

To me, there's two ways to make the playerbase less toxic:

  1. Educate them about how their words affect others and ruin the game experience. Riot has been using this technique so far, and after 7 years we still know it isn't working.

  2. Limit how players can express their rage to other players (By the methods given above). There's an interesting study that showed Japanese people don't get angry very much because their language doesn't have a lot of ways to express anger. This is the solution we need.

I disagree Based on a purely information You tell us Japanese has less anger because words are less angry. Show evidence. Even if you limit the language people will just reinvent the wheel(people will go from gg ez to xx zz) Simply blocking words doesn't do anything.

To go to your 1st point, ping spam is already limited. 5 pings quickly locks out pings for 30 secs.

2nd point, ahh yes just what I want. People to afk in games to report people, great idea.

In 7 years riot has done what exactly to educate people? The game has gotten far cleaner compared to season 1, so in that sense its working.

So show if you can show a good source of JAPAN's language having less anger words I can nullify my 1st arguement( in addition stats to show they're less angry) 2- stats to prove people are afraid of mute button 3-Disabling all chat improves games(HOTS is an example find another)

Maybe riot could bring back the player judged tribunal instead of the robot that auto bans if you use certain words, if you made an account and used "Toxic" words in non toxic phrases and had everyone report you the account would be banned for using the flagged words in chat regardless of the phrasing.

secondly even though by using riots game you are having limitations placed on your free speech, and people just like to troll, a voice chat would be much better than a typing chat because it's much easier to talk to somone than having to type everything in those cases when a ping doesn't say enough

Treating the symptoms instead of the cause is ineffective, that should be obvious.

There is no reason why we should loose allchat and pings just because of some brats with no self-control. The problem is the brats, why not loose those instead? Solve the problem at the source.

Please get rid of fucking all chat RIOT, it's completely and utterly unnecessary. Out of how many games do you see the words "GL;HF in your games? I see them once out of every 15-20 games. Smite doesn't offer all chat, and the game's environment is completely different via toxicity. I don't expect to get into a game while playing smite and read the enemy teams bm and flame, stating that i'm "trash" at the game. Like, when do you ever see an enemy player in league say "nice outplay"? I never see that anymore, on a personal experience. The only time there's really any good influential use on all chat is "GGWP" when the game is over, but sometimes, people say "GGEZ" or just "EZ". If you guys really gave a shit about the toxicity going around in league, you'd really take my advice. Yes, I'm aware that there's an option to just turn it off completely, but it still doesn't solve the issue.

I agree with 1 and 3. 3 specially, allchat is absolutely useless on matchmade games (not on customs and tournaments, mind you). Smite for instance doesn't have it and it's really noticeable how much better the community is for it.

I'd also add that there should be a way to "overtly mute" people, that is show them that they're muted. Because even after you muted somebody the person will often still type thinking you can still read them, which is distracting both to the idiot wasting time typing instead of playing and the rest of the team that still reads it.

change mute ping to restrict ping.

restricted ping: you only see one ping per champion every 1 minute

In a game like League, toxicity will never be reduced by any meaningful measure. Its a game that punishes you for your teammates playing poorly, and forces you to stay in unfun games. The biggest thing they could ever do to reduce toxicity is to rework their ranking system. If people are punished for losing a game in which they played perfectly, but their teammates fed/trolled/left, there will always be toxicity.

Or riot could encorage every one to stop being but hurt realize when there is advice that helps your game play compared to omg uninstall and kys. and some one saying that they had an ez experience in the game isnt toxic you may not like it but there are lots of things not to like and if you let it get to you, you likely dont have a strong enough counsituion to internet.

This game isn't just meant to be competitive. Getting rid of all chat gets rid of too many fun aspects of the game to be considered.

Don't take the game too seriously, even ranked.

While the first two suggestions would be very valid and helpful I disagree on the third point. All chat can be some of the best conversations and chance meetings.

There was a time where I ran across players from a game I use to play that had a small community. It had been two years but I still recognized their names. Without all chat I would have never been able to catch up with them. I could have sent them a friend request later but my UN was different then it was when I played that game and probably would have been denied.

There have been times when a group of my friends and I queue up and end up facing another one of our friends randomly. This can lead to a lot of fun in all chat.

All chat has its detriments, yes, but so does team chat. If any enemy player is giving you grief or anything just mute them, just like you would a player on your team.

  1. I agree, we should have the option to mute pings. Who doesn't hate getting spam pinged every 30 seconds by the toxic feeding @ss on your team?

  2. No. Bad idea, this is just asking people to sit there not doing anything typing up a report. The last thing I need when I have a Toxic rager, is for half my team to be AFK reporting them.

  3. Are you saying give us the option to disable "all chat" or that it should be automatically disabled? I mean there is already an option to disable it sooo... I don't think all chat is a problem, I enjoy talking to my enemies when they are being friendly. Sometimes it helps to learn a bit about the champion you are facing and sometimes it is a good way to know who is tilted on their team and thus who you should be focusing.

1+2 i can agree with 100% 3 i enjoy dicking around with the enemy team and it's easy to disable in options.
