I need help regarding toxicity control

Hey guys, I really want to ask for your help today. Back in the end of season 6 and season 7, I really had no problem controlling toxicity and just ignored people flaming me or others, thinking to myself 'its just sad lives getting triggered over video games'.

In season 8, however, I really can't seem to control my temper. I almost NEVER even get annoyed at people having bad games, and if they troll I just leave a remark 'have fun digging your own grave' and just take it in. But I find it a lot more difficult to ignore and mute people flaming me or others for whatever arbitrary reason they have. Whenever someone shows ANY sign of toxicity, blame-shifting, 'holier-than-you' superiority complex, or bossiness, then I really can't stop myself nowadays. I flame them back and I flame them back HARD. I don't use hate speech, but I call them some pretty bad names and insult them in every aspect. I know out of game it's a very weak and pathetic thing to flame people in chat for any reason, even if they aggravated you first (well, ESPECIALLY if you start the flaming), but in game I can't think like that.

It's not like the game turned less fun in general for me, or something bad happened in my life. In fact, in both those aspects things became better. I really don't know why my temper turned worse.

I haven't ever been punished before, and still not punished now. The IFS system is pretty easy to work around, so as long as you flame below a certain threshold and know the trigger words the system is relatively lenient. That's not the problem but....being flamed and flaming just makes the game, which I genuinely enjoy, less fun. I don't think anyone enjoys raging and/or being raged at is fun at all, as hate never makes anyone feel better (unless you're a genuine sadist).

So what can I do? How do you guys control your temper and ignore people flaming you?

Thanks again!

I mean this is basically what I do:

  1. acknowledge that the chat just became toxic and know how to identify a player that may trigger you.

  2. choose to not instigate or respond to that behavior -if you chose to respond, even mild toxicity may be considered low-toxicity and can add to your toxicity rating. -If conversation is beginning to lean towards toxicity, responses can make toxic players sour really, really quickly.

  3. Mute the behavior if you are at risk at responding in a toxic manner. -if you feel yourself being triggered, or about to be triggered immediately step away from the conversation by muting that individual. -do not let yourself be baited. -do not tell the individual that they are muted -do not tell the individual that you are going to report them -just mute them without saying or instigating anything.

  4. Play the game out as best as you can and do your best to not even acknowledge the toxic individual, or individuals. -note: in the case of toxic premades just /muteall. even if they all decide to report you, If you are responding appropriately the system will consider your report more valid than theirs. And so, your 1 report on each teammate is worth more than their 4 reports on you because yours is actually valid and you did not instigate any toxicity.

  5. When you get to the report screen, report all the players involved and move on.

Seems to me also, that your getting into a habit of it. What you should do is work on reversing that habit or do something low key and less serious and then come-back to league. This is all psychological. You tend to act the same way around certain stimulus. The only way to reverse this behavior is to reverse your reaction to the stimulus.

Work on taking the game less seriously. Maybe, try playing support? lol.

GL to you

Pretty much stop playing, only play with friends, or just play to jack off.

You won't really have fun otherwise.

Also, the more competitive and focused on winning you are, the less fun you have. However, the game heavily discourages players being unserious because actions have much heavier consequences in the current state of the game (which will only get worse as games become closer to LCS).

/mute all at the beginning of the game. there's nothing important that can't be conveyed with pings in soloq

Anger is addictive in a lot of ways. It feels good to be angry. You can get a shot of adrenaline if you're really raging. Anger as a pattern is super easy to develop.

Honestly, if it's the chat that's getting to you I'd say /muteall at the beginning of the match. You've got pings. I wouldn't, but you certainly can even tell you're team that you're muting and why. The important part is to stop yourself from getting angry to being with and it sounds like it's once someone starts flaming that you get angry. If you can't see the flames, you can't get angry at the flames.

You can choose to focus on the good stuff instead of the bad. If your teammate just killed their laner, congratulate them for it. Thank your jungler for a gank. If things get really bad, just take a small break from the game. Even a week or so will do. It's good that you're noticing your behaviour, because that can stop a lot of toxicity already.

If you feel that you're starting to get tilted and you're really angry, I suggest to just stop playing because if you keep playing most likely you're going to lose your next game and your going to do the same as before, flame your teammates. Most likely they will flame you back and in the end you guys would be having a heated argument. You tilt that player and he goes into his next game and starts flaming his teammates. Having a breather after a tilting and bad game can make you calm down and stop toxicity from spreading. It's an endless cycle if you keep playing, but once you calm yourself down you can jump back into the game and play at your best. If they keep flaming you, I would just mute them.

I stopped playing as much been trying other games where you dont have to worry about system always spying on you and tracking your stuff. Its not the community that bothers me its RIOT's attitude towards it. Lets face it average person is far from being any where close to professional caliber & sportsmanship. We are not getting paid to play this game. We have different personal lives and real job related stress that everyone deals with in its own way. RIOT's imposes their set of standards taken directly out of physical sports in a competitive game and real life people interactions in a Online Virtual Game which does not work, i can debate this hours so i dont even want to get into this.

They punish people left and right, reading chat logs, and assign points accordingly all in hopes of improving community to their standards while flying that banner under the "community". Honestly community is nowhere close to this. The ones that play this game for a longer period of time know this, and they have several accounts and experiment over time and know how exactly that system works and have figured their way around it. When those people are in bad mood they can report a new player in such a way and get their satisfaction for getting the player punished for loosing their game.

The real victims are new players that come in and they dont know how easily people can be banned, and get reported and they get chat banned. This is where toxic seed gets planted. You start to feel that it is very unfair why they hell you are being punished. Because people have been doing the same thing to you throughout games. I blame RIOT for all this. The very nature of Video Games is to take a break from reality. To treat it at the standards of some shit they made up in their mind is what bothers me. I really think this game is declining for the very reason for new players sticking around. Who the hell wants to spend money on game where you are constantly being judged. Not everyone is buddha and meditates and holds everything in while getting flamed. The very idea of holding everyone to a high unreasonable standard of your product reminds of a bit like Tommy Hilfiger on Oprah incident. Either you are too arrogant of a company yourself to set standards on your consumers or you have control issues. I mean if RIOT really wanted to they can disable chat system in game all together and leave that to pre-made and after-game. But they don't and that tells me everything. Try other games they are much less stressful.

Okay, coming from a guy whose banned so take that with a pinch of salt; when you start to see flaming any way shape or form, ,mute the guy whose flaming, and the whole team if needed.

secondley; keep your cool, always think of ways to win the game, becasue that is what youre playing for essentially, right? if you win, grats you get LP :), if you dont win, you just lose in a video game, it happens. make that a mindset, as if your success depends on it, even your account, because if you keep behaing that way you dont know where youre going to find yourself in, and if you take my advice, try not to get banned :).

so, just remeber; best option is muting, then focusing solely on the game, and only the game. as you "master" that way of thinking, you just might aswell keep the chat open, to see if you can even stop the flaming, and turn the whole game around, trust me, this happens, alot.

gl out there:)

Honestly...not playing the game is probably the absolute best thing to do if you aren't going to play with bots and stuff. Like...the community has been overrun. There's nothing to do but either just not care and try your best and type up essays in the report section after the matches or not play league. The latter is probably the healthiest option honestly...
