@Lyte: Regarding ban escalations and death threats

RedWedding·10/1/2014, 6:28:18 PM·91 votes·8,440 views

I didn't know how to send this to you, so I'm doing it here.

A few weeks ago, I was perusing the red tracker and came across one of the many "Lyte plz no" threads. I would link it here but I do not want to draw attention to it. OP was saying that they did not deserve bans, as they did not swear and only told people to go kill themselves. Which, according to them, was not that bad.

You escalated their ban to permanent, citing death threats, and OP raged and raged, saying that telling someone to kill themselves was in no way a death threat.

He was right. It isn't a death threat; it is much, much worse.

I have been at a point where if someone had told me to go kill myself, I would have done it. Even if they were some faceless stranger across the internet. I know that others I have played with have been in the same spot. I know that many I haven't even seen would feel the same. Depression is real. Telling someone to kill themselves is not a death threat, it is a potentially lethal attack.

I just wanted to say thank you. I know you get a lot of flak for doing what you do over on the player behavior team, but- at the risk of sounding melodramatic- you may have saved someone's life. So thank you. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Just remember that there's another human behind that computer screen, and no one deserves to be treated like that. +1

Thanks for the kind words RedWedding.

I think inside, most players that are neutral or positive are the silent majority. We don't like toxicity, we don't think it belongs in League, but taking the extra step of standing up to it is a very difficult thing to do--it's just easier to let things slide, and mind our own business ya know?

I think more and more, the goals of the team are to empower players to stand up once in awhile and reject toxicity. To give the silent majority an easy way to have a voice. That'd be kinda cool.

RedWedding,

First off... Nice name...that's awesome.

I'll be the first to admit I've raged several times. I've been a real jerk... but even someone like me who's been a jerk should be able to recognize exactly what you're saying. Telling someone to kill themselves or threatening death is never ok.

I'm sorry to everyone who has to deal with that from this community. Players and Reds alike.

I wish the OP the best and this just reminds me Riot needs to be harsher. I can't speak for others but my experience....I EXPECT most games to involve trolls people raging, etc. Because most of them DO and it's goddamn tiring. AND on top of it these people have no fear of bans at all and love to post in chat exactly that. It's tiring hoping you get lucky and your game isn't you playing with 2-4 assholes.

Iv'e been told to kill myself, the first time I played league for a account I had, my friend (Online) who power leveled straight to level 30 and gold 3. With that he invited me to a normal game with his friends. When I sucked horribly against the other thirties they said for me to kill myself and stuff. With that I actually thought I should Kill myself. I got over it and here I am now, I still want to be reporting that dude to this day,

I've always had the ideology that suicide is for cowards, so death threats or people telling me to kill myself don't affect me whatsoever. I wish more people understood my point of view...

EDIT: HEY! I WASN'T CALLING OP A COWARD OR ANYTHING! I was just saying I could easily brush off such threats and that I wish other people were strong enough to do that. So please, don't go downvoting me...

Very well said. I have been dealing with depression for a long time now and absolutely do not like to hear death threats to anyone because I have been in a very dark place before.

One game I was playing, the enemy Diana said in all-chat to report a person because he/she was telling her to kill herself. I told the person to stop and proceeded to chat with the Diana, telling her my story. She had said that her best friend had killed herself not even eight weeks prior, and that it was a sore subject.

You don't know who you are threating with you words and how they will affect that person. Why can't people just be nice to each other?

Telling someone to kill themselves is not a death threat, it is a potentially lethal attack.

You can't be fucking serious, what's next? Liking or adding someone on Facebook is rape? This whole generation is a bunch of over-sensitive brats who take offense in everything, i'm not belittling depression, but come on, choose your fucking words.

Meanwhile I reported(with ticket) player telling me kill myself with additional homophobic slurs and verbal abuse, ticket got reviewed and answered and a player still playing. Been already a week so i guess he won't be punished. #EUNE

I have to say, in the past week of playing ranked after reaching lvl 30. I've had at least 3 people threaten to kill me, tell me to go kill myself, and the like, I won't go into detail about how many times it happens to others as well. Mostly this happens when we start losing, and they decide to just sit in spawn and chew me out or someone else out specifically. But, I kinda just wanted to get that off my chest. Also not sure if anyone has suggested this before, but the report option needs a death threat report aimed at you/another player, which would need an explanation also to the report.

This thread certainly deserves my vote.

It makes me feel bad, and ashamed for times that I've snapped on people. Although I've never told someone to go kill themselves, but I have been a jerk. I've also been on the other side of the spectrum, and once I have been told to "go get cancer, and die" just for being outplayed, and losing lane.
