Shower Thoughts on How to Fix Rek'Sai
So, apparently
became a pretty hot topic all of sudden. I'm not a Rek'Sai main, I don't even have that much experience with her, but I think I could get a grasp of the problem with all those topics popping up. While taking a shower a random idea came to my mind:
According to the boards, Rek'Sai has been reduced to a walking vision ward with a knock up attached. Seeing how powerful this can be on the LCS/High Elo, it makes sense that Riot nerfs her in some way. Seeing how shitty this is on Low/Medium Elo, it makes absolutely zero sense to nerf her other aspects.
So instead of a simple "Fuck Rito, they just fuck everything we ever loved" thread, I came up with a probably not that original idea to fix her in a few easy steps. At least in a way.
1- Remove her vision gimmicks when burried. No more restricted vision. No more Tremor Sense. Burried on not, her vision works just like the vision of any other champion.
2- Remove the champion reveal on her Burried Q.
3- Relocate her power budget to her damaging abilities.
4- (Optional) Reduce the power in her Knock Up/Remove the instant Knock Up.
Lately, Riot has been following the mindset that adding utility to a champion's kit is a way to ensure they're easier to balance. We saw it with all the major reworks (
,
,
, just to name a few BIG ones), as well as in some tweeks (For example, adding a heal to
's Q).
Rek'Sai's problem is exactly the opposite. She's packing too much utility, therefore having her power budget for damage, tankiness and overall badassery lowered as the price to pay. After all, one champion can't have it all, so nerfing her damage kinda makes sense.
Now let's see her theme and lore. She's the biggest, fastest and strongest Xer'Sai that has ever existed. A Xer'Sai with the size of a hunting hound was able to fight a group of Noxian guards, taking one of them down before dying. And that's the size of a hound. Rek'Sai is said to be the size of a Mammoth. You can imagine the amount of destruction such a being is capable of bringing.
The question now is: how does that translate into gameplay? The answer is simple: It doesn't. Right now she's nothing but a crappy CC bot that brings a lot of vision control. In duels she's easily outclassed by many other champions and she's not that impressive of a teamfighter.
Take Darius for example. A great example of lore and gameplay merging together nicely. In his lore he's one scary motherfucker. He killed his general, he led armies to victory and he's aiming to rid Noxus of the weak. Gameplay wise? He's THE ONE guy you don't want near you. Be it in a duel or in a team fight, getting near Darius usually means death by decaptation.
By removing the Vision Controling aspect of Rek'Sai kit, not only she can be turned into a better champion for all (or at least most) Elos, but she can fit her lore much better. She has too much utility and little to no damage right now. Not only that, but she has some kind of utility that goes to waste in the hands of most players. She can vision control and (almost) global presence.
My take would be simple: keep the global pressure, remove the vision. As a compensation, she can either receive more utility in the form of some extra CC, or actual dueling power. Giving her Q a better single target damage, her E some sort of steroid or anything that makes you actually want to avoid being the target of Rek'Sai would vastly increase not only her viability for lower Elos, but also fit her lore much better. Who knows? She might even be kinda viable for the pros after it's all said and done.
