It's a total noob trap, and wasteful. You won't be either able to get the item nor take its essence.

I've just wasted a ward skin shard, thinking that I get to try it for 7 weeks (free trial period) before deciding whether I want to spend my essence on it or not. But nope, it consumes the shard itself. Why didn't you add a warning message saying: "Renting an item will consume the shard, and you won't be able to unlock it afterwards" to confirm the rental???

The ward skin I lost isn't even available in the shop (legacy skin), I feel so bad right now Amumu ...

It seems sort of obvious. All of the options it's listed with consume the shard. Even if you've never seen or read anyone explaining this, how did you not realize?

Should have the read the patch or watched the hundreds of videos made about it

No, it's clearly meant as a Rental. You can't keep anything after wards... you should realize this.
