When the hell are you going to shorten the death timers?

It's really boring to wait 60 seconds to respawn, when the game only passed 24 minutes. REALLY BORING.

They aren't. It's part of their overall strategy to make games shorter. Longer death timers early in the game makes it easier to close a game out after winning a fight. Working as intended as far as Riot is concerned.

Conturbatio34 votes

No, it simply makes players play extra safe to avoid death therefore extending the duration of the game even further.

Then tell people to not play scared.

Enemies have long death timers too you know.

That's not how fear works.

That's what has end up happening, not what they wanted. Kinda sucks though how much games have become avoid the enemy team.

So the overall shorter matches are because of long death timers? Sure.

Also shorter death timers meaning people can get back in lane and stop their tower from being pushed as hard wouldnt make the game last longer, which is the opposite of what Rito wants... got it.

OK everybody, you heard it here, the matches are actually lasting longer because of long death timers in the snowball META, not shorter. We figured it out, we can stop wondering now.

Matches are overall shorter, Riot wants it that way, towers are made of paper, death timers are the same, lanes get free push bonuses based on different number of towers.

Simply put, shorter death timers would counter act what they decided the game should be like. Im not saying I like it, or its more fun or it should be that way. Im telling you how it is, why it is, and refuting your insane notion that long death timers make the matches longer due to people playing safe. People play safe cause.... MATCHES ARE SHORTER FOR A LOT OF REASONS (including death timers), and a death means a loss of several objective... thats why people play safe.

And where are you getting this? From Pro play? From your own experience? From my experience games went from averaging 45-55 minutes last season to around 35-40. In pro play, well, just look at IEM. I think there were 4 games that went over 40 minutes. One that went over 55.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nyWZqlCU_ik That is what happens when people play extra safe to extend the duration of the game. We have a lot more action then that.

Apocyliptic2 votes

If that were true than games wouldn't be, on average, shorter. Some conclusions, while seeming logical, really aren't. This is an example.

Sairentosutoka1 votes

after they death timers changed i rarely have a game lasting more than 35 mins. your games lasting longer just means your team or your enemy team is full of idiots who don't know how to end the game. also it doesn't go above 60 seconds till like 30 minutes.

This is what is actually happening more and more, funny enough. Is why pro games are becoming so damn boring to watch if they aren't a slugfest early on. Teams are starting to do the whole lane swap tower take, then just play safe for 20 minutes to the point the casters comment on it every other game lately.

Maybe, but I'm pretty sure the reason they want to shorten games is to make them feel more fast-paced and fun . The longer death timers certainly makes games shorter, but in turn causes a lot of safer play to go on as the game does and the game gets steadily less fun as it goes on, as you end up spending more time watching the game in black and white than anything else if you get killed.

It was implemented I'm fairly certain to help make games shorter for the sake of the second split of the LCS and so on pro scene as they are significantly increasing the amount of games in the LCS specifically from 1 game series to best of 3 in NA and best of 2 in EU.

I know that sounds a bit cynical, but I'm honestly believing that is the case. I think they were hoping for "shorter games = ability to squeeze in more games in a day/week"

Man, if only the game had some kind of fast paced mode with shorter death timers and more focus on objective control rather than farming minions.

Oh wait, we did.

But now it's gone because no matter how much the boards complain about how awful Rift is at any given time, no one ever played Dominion.

EcchiOtakuTM3 votes

NO they forgot to improve death timers. They increase the game's pacing and forgot to fix some stuff to reflect those changes, and death timers are one of those.

Shonjl1 votes

I never understood why they have to even try, or should even be allowed to purposely make games shorter. Let games be as long or short as they want. If people overall want to player later game champs, let them. There is no reason to force shorter games down people's throats.

I enjoy the quick 20 minute games just as much as the long 1 hour games. But I like when they end naturally that way, not since Riot stuck their hand where they truthfully shouldn't(Just because its their game and they are allowed doesn't equate to they should. In the business world, being able to and actually doing are different things) All they did was make the game more passive, and more snowbally which is not healthy for the game at all.

I mean the boards are an example even if not a huge one but really look at them. They used to be about complaining about X champ being strong, nowadays more people are complaining how bad the game is in general and not actual champs. Thats kinda a big thing coming from an area a group of people voice a lot of things even to the point of being whiny and at everyone else throats, that a huge percent actually agree on one thing.

I just wish they would buff towers to compensate, it's bad enough being dead for over a minute, but the fact that they can easily blow through three tiers of turrets during that time is a little much.

Saianna8 votes

I dunno what's your problem guys..

Thanks to those deathtimers I have enough time to watch some guides or make a sandwitch. Once I've even managed to run to a shop across the street for something to drink. It's like Riot is telling me to take it slow and care for my health!

Sohleks6 votes

Maybe spread out the curve a little.

People die at 30 mins, it's like "oh god it's 30 mins"

Riot: But muh homegaurds.

Every decent player bought them when necessary. Hell. I would frequently purchase them just to catch a fatty wave in my lane after a successful roam. Instantly pays for itself due to tower denial and cs and exp. Nothings changed there

I don't understand the death timers if you died 3 times you have the same death time as someone who died 24 times. Why not give extra death timers to people who die 24/7 Example you die at that moment of you death you are 3-0-0 now 3-1-0 at around 20 min into the game your death timer is around 24 secs. Compared to someone who dies who is now 1-11-0 why not just give that dude the long ass death timer say 40-50secs. If someone dies over and over but still has the same death timers as the people who are trying to win the game and not just feed and not accomplish anything. I LOVE 40-50 min games the feeling to win those games are the best part of the game. Now its just meh, every champion has some 40-50% Armor shred or 40-50% total enemy hp does 1 Billion Damage. When I play league of Legends just feels like Mortal Kombat, you get a kill in lane you are now 1-0-0 enemy is now 0-1-0 You won the lane simple as that just from the death timers being hour long just 5 mins into the game,
Its funny how people say Bronze players just go for kills and not objectives, Look at it now Kills = wins Kill you lane opponent 5 mins into the game, hit the tower 3 times boom gone, move to mid let your Ryze Veigar Lux Anivia Annie Brand Ahri Fidd Morgana Tf Xerath Zyra land a 60 year long stun ability thats on a 3 sec cooldown 3 hits boom mid tower is now gone by that time the enemy top laner is now up after a year of having fun dead. All collapse bot kill the adc and support who if not tanky some squishy ap caster support the adc is now worthless just by going 0-1-0 . Get dragon on the way out, back shop for the Lord Dominiks regards item for Top lane and for adc and just group up mid push it let the INNER tower do its HUGE DMG" YAWN" dive get inhib ggwp.

BigPooStorm3 votes

I think it's actually kind of backfiring in terms of pro play and making games more long and drawn out. Teams in the mid game are now so scared to fight since if you lose a team fight mid game, you lose so much, and it can result in a 3-4k gold swing, or even more since you're dead for so long. Couple that with the dragon change and you get these lane swap, mid lane aram snooze fests that people are complaining about.

Vith4 votes

I agree, it seems like players are more afraid to make risky plays.

Also I think adding more downtime to a game is the LAST thing you should ever do in terms of fun.

Not a fan of huge death timers, especially in pubbie games. I can't keep my teammates from doing stupid things. If 1-2 teammates make a stupid decision, we lose the game no matter how much we were kicking ass.

Had a game where we had only lost two towers, we were pushing into enemy base, destroyed two inhibs and were working on nexus towers. We all had like 10% health, two enemy champs that had been dead came back to life, a third champ had been trying to harass us, and suddenly they flipped the game on it's head because my team was trying to be greedy. I made it out, the other 4 on my team got killed in the enemy base. The enemy team grouped up, stormed Baron, them pushed mid, won the whole match taking 5 turrets an inhib and the nexus along with Baron before my teammates had even respawned. We were ahead in towers, dragons, kills, gold, etc. Team made one mistake at 40 minutes and it was game over despite how much we outplayed them early.

fredkiller20002 votes

The death timers should depend on the number of times you have been killed. For example, if you first died at 20 minutes, you should have the same death timer as the person who first died at 2 minutes.

riot is sort of in between a rock and a hard place on this issue. If they have long death timers like now it's really easy to end games and things can end unpredictably if they have short death timers the enemy can stall for 40 minutes and avoid fights and waits for the death timers to become long then they hope to get a pick or by luck win a teamfight and then whichever team loses that teamfight or gets picked off loses the game no matter what happened the past 40 minutes.

Riot can't make turrets stronger or even with death timers being long people will just stall games out.

In light of this what really needs to happen would be something along the lines of turrets being uber strong and getting weaker as the game progresses also getting weaker everytime your enemies get a dragon or baron. After every turret is killed you would have to wait a while before your able to kill the second tier turret or even if you don't have to wait a while the second turret would be really strong for a while and then it would go back to regular strength and then slowly get weaker as the game progresses and the same with the other turrets. If you take one outter turret the other outer turrets should become weaker same with mid turrets and inner turrets.

This would give the game decent length. Would place importance on all objectives. Would give both teams a reason to contest an objective especally if you give the team that is lower on dragons a little bit of a buff when around dragon pit when dragon is up. This would keep teams from losing of one mistake and still give opportunity for coming back and stalling games and with turrets this strong you can make early game champions loads stronger and make the late game champions actual late game champions and outscale the early game champions hard.

While shortening the game's length did work in favour of the longer death timers, it did cause an opposite effect of making the gameplay duller in a sense that players are afraid to take risks now. I agree that turrets should be buffed in compensation at least - seeing 3 towers being taken down right after a bad teamfight is just ridiculous.

Asyde1 votes

Normally they don't bother me so much but for the first time i felt really frustrated with death timers yesterday. We were winning hands down the whole game and were steadily pushing forward. We lost one major team fight and within that minute they took 4 towers, baron and our nexus

It's painfully obvious when you look at our match history http://matchhistory.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/#match-details/NA1/2117560349/203075014?tab=overview

The death timers are fair I'd say, just don't rush in.

Lord Galvatron1 votes

If I'm not mistaken, Rito is actually looking into that. A lot of people are salty that they have to wait 50 sec to re-spawn when the game is 35-ish minutes in. LCS was noticeably impacted this year by the death timer changes.

Krys Star1 votes

Is there a source for this? Because mid-February, Meddler said Riot is content with death timers and that it will likely not be changing any time soon.

Lord Galvatron2 votes

Nvm I re-checked the unofficial PBE site I use, and they removed the changes. Welp, thats mighty disappointing.

Krys Star1 votes

Mighty disappointing indeed, because the long death timers make for a very boring, stale meta. Everyone's scared to make a mistake, and one mistake can set you incredibly behind despite being ahead. For example, TSM.

When are you going to learn that dying opens opportunities for your opponent ?
