A Word On The Star Guardian Team

**EDIT: Spoiler -- ** Christ people! While I do feel that my points are somewhat valid, this is not intended to be a serious "WTF IS RIOT THINKING" Kind of post. Put the butt-hurt cream away and just relax. I mean come on, .. I have a picture of Xzibit in here. .. How does that not say "light hearted"?

So these are just my thoughts on the champions chosen for the Star Gurardian skins.

First of all, I like the skins, they are very well done from what I can tell and I will most likely be getting them, because Riot knows how to make money off of me. (Damn you Riot)

But I'll just say that the champions who were chosen have left me ... less than satisfied.

First up is Lux

https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-euLEiyHt7w4/V-BRtINesCI/AAAAAAAAUn8/XIGvTC_Tzesqxipj0tAEfjpqatjtti-GwCLcB/s1600/Lux_1920x1080.jpg

She was the first launched. She's been available for a while now, and I can't complain about her at all. The skin was done very well, and I am honestly glad that they decided to continue the theme.

As for the champion herself, she is a mage/support, but lets be honest, she is mostly played as a support. Her most notable abilities are her strong poke abilities, including her stun, and her ultimate. She also offers a pass-through skill shot that shields herself and allies as it passes through, and returns, shielding new allies or refreshing the shield duration, ... oh and lets not forget that it refreshes her own shield duration once again.

All good, again, I'm fine with this. Thematic teams typically have champions like this in order to be a well rounded team.

Next is Lulu

https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-j3K_fjFTylQ/V-BRtMJVj7I/AAAAAAAAUn0/-fXbjRzp_ZkadWkJShd0QgjTcaDeFQfBQCEw/s1600/Lulu_1920x1080.jpg

I want to say there is "no particular order" for the remaining champions I list, .. but that would be a lie, because I may be saving some of the latter for dramatic effect :p

Lulu is a support/mage! Well okay, at least the primary and secondary roles have been swapped, and she does typically get played as a support, so I suppose this works. Her more notable abilities include strong poke, speeding up her allies or slowing down enemies, buffing auto attacks, shielding a single ally, or providing a massive health regen steroid.

... hm, ... ookay, moving on.

Third on the list is Janna

https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Ap8zmC-xqUk/V-BRsyQV0vI/AAAAAAAAUnw/VZ6PPfQp5Rwsbv_Y9hV5l28eCmhSbYSogCEw/s1600/Janna_1920x1080.jpg

Janna is a ... support, ... mage .... Wait, what? So we have a mage/support, a support/mage, and a support/mage? .. is Star Guardian a support theme? Okay, I can actually get behind that. I mean PROJECT is more of a fighter theme, right? Programmed is a mage theme, ...

Her notable abilities is not massive poke, but she has a good ranged knock-up that is pretty brutal, she slows her enemies down, .. she speeds allies up when they move toward her, ... and she provides a shield, .. which gives AD (buffs auto attacks) ...

I'm sensing some patterns...

Okay, but what about Poppy

https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-5_bW8R1zrlI/V-BRtSdQ3eI/AAAAAAAAUoA/uD-vV7r9b2EBbikzJs55ZwupiNgKd29vwCEw/s1600/Poppy_1920x1080.jpg

Here we go, Poppy is a tank/fighter. Now we're talking, some diversity. ... but wait, .. Hasn't Poppy also been played as a support?

Okay, what are her abilities. Her passive gives her a ... shield. Well, at least it is only her that gets the shield. She's just selfish. She doesn't really have a lot of range. Oh but she can speed herself up (because this team needs more speed), and stop engages, and increase her own resistances. Okay, okay, this team is missing some tank abilities so far and seeming to be such heavy poke she provides some good counter engage. She also has a good pick ability which can be used as an engage, stun, and/or peel depending on how it is used. And her ultimate is a huge knockup or the most massive knockback in the game.

Different at least, but my goodness the shields and the movement speed on this team. ..

And last but certainly not least, Jinx

https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ES1Ao21PUMI/V-BRs66USAI/AAAAAAAAUn4/2kQ3CPS8zoEms2iQDgDM3Gn7qa_KJ8SKgCEw/s1920/Jinx_1920x1080.jpg

Okay, I should honestly know better than to bash Jinx. Her fan-base will probably make a mess of their keyboards when they see the official splash art, if they haven't already. And I will admit, I thought the fan made concept was pretty good, but I just feel like Jinx is way too over-hyped in general.

With that out of the way, Jinx is a Marksman, and nothing else. She is not a support, .. in no way shape or form. Anyone who thinks she can be a support is drunk. .. Which is okay, but there goes the whole Star Guardian = Support series idea. Just seems a bit awkward to me.

Alright well, what are her abilities? She uses auto attacks, .. using auto attacks makes her auto attacks auto attack faster. ...

https://a2ua.com/xzibit/xzibit-008.jpg

No! no! no! .. go away Xzibit!

So imagine this with Lulu's Help, Pix! and Janna's Zephyr on top of it. AD buffed, bonus magic damage, and insane attack speed. Not to mention the shields.

But lets not forget Jinx's passive MORE MOVEMENT SPEED!

And she has AOE poke, an insane poke/slow, stun traps, and a global ultimate.

So, Star Guardians

SUPER ANNOYING BITCHES FROM SPACE!!!

This could honestly be one of the most annoying team compositions ever made.

In truth, they would be very feast or famine. Either they play wisely, get ahead, and just poke their enemies into the fetal position, or they will make mistakes and get stomped easily.

But, I had one last thing I wanted to talk about. I honestly hope Riot does not stop with these champions for this series. The champions selected for this first run are, pretty clearly my biggest issue with this release. I think there are tons of champions who could have been used which would have made more sense, and could honestly use more skins.

The first one that comes to my mind is Diana. None of the champions in the previous comp would really make great junglers. I would imagine it would end up being 2 / 1 / 2 lanes. Poppy and Janna top, Lux mid, and Jinx Lulu bottom. Poppy, or Lux could jungle I suppose.

I also kinda felt like Taliyah would have fit in this theme pretty well.

Honestly, one champion I thought would have been really nice to see in this, .. I don't really know why, .. is Sejuani.

I could honestly care less if Miss Fortune, Katarina, Nidalee, Ahri, Caitlyn, Fiora, Riven, or Vi get a Star Guardian Skin. I feel like they already get a lot of attention because they tend to fit into the typically 'pretty - skin' category. Jinx and Janna would have been on this list too, but they are already confirmed.

Anyways ... again, these are just my thoughts. Take them as you will. Try and keep the hate to a minimum, just opinions.

You're missing some points from a design standpoint and are only looking at this team from a strict gameplay standpoint. These girls were picked because they have personalities that fit within the typical personality types of anime girls. They're all fairly young, naive, they're passionate about what they do, and they're all perky. This was the major reason why these girls were picked, the foremost reason being their youth. Others, like Diana, Riven, Ahri, Leona, and Karma, are bad fits because they don't have the youthful personalities and they don't feel correct if you were put them in a high school anime. Designing skins isn't always based around getting them all into the same game, so bear that in mind for the future. Try to see the inspiration from the source material.

As for the champion herself, she is a mage/support, but lets be honest, she is mostly played as a support.

Not sure how you get that idea:

Lux is played 84,09% in midlane, with a 50,01%-winrate. Midlane lux is overall the 22nd-most common pick of all champs in all their roles.

Meanwhile Lux is only played as a support in 12,94% of the time, with only a winrate of 46,37% and is overall the 142nd most common pick(note that this means that several champs have 2 positions that are both more common than support-lux)

This whole thread jumps onto the fallacy of a skin series needing to have a consistent trait in amongst it's cast particularly in terms of roles.

Lux is a mid laner

Poppy is a toplaner

Janna is a traditional support

Lulu traditional support

Jinx ADC

Think of it like this if you had a 5 man Star Guardian team:

Top: Lulu Jungle: Poppy Mid: Lux Bot: Jinx Janna

We all know how Lulu is played commonly in top/mid as support. And I did see a decent amount of Poppy jungle back when she first got reworked.

The only reason why Jinx seems so out of place is because of the lore, she doesn't want to be like the other Star Guardians, she wants to go her own way, being the rebel she is [slayer-jinx-wink]

#From the lore, chapter 3:

"Star Guardians are imbued with incredible power, but with it comes a lifetime of service to the universe. It is a life burdened by responsibility and fatal consequences. Although rare, a Star Guardian may reject their fate as a protector. However, the results of such an action reverberate across the universe and beyond."
