A rate & report system

Currently riot is using a report & honor system. And the more & more I analyze this system. I come to the conclusion the system is outdated is buildup from a terrible concept both on design perspective as the output is brings:

Report system The current state of the report system is a disaster and people just don't take it serious anymore. What's the point on reporting a player for one thing that he will never recieve a punishment for. What the point on reporting someone randomly. It's not that their's a punishment on it. The only thing what it does is slowing down the punishment from players that actualy deserved that report.

Let's look to the current available functions that are reportable:

  • Harassment: Offensive Language
  • Harassment: Verbal Abuse
  • Griefing: Assisting Enemy Team
  • Unskilled Player
  • Refuse to Communicate With Team
  • Leaving the Game/AFK
  • Negative Attitude
  • Inappropriate Name
  • Spamming

Some of these report options just doesn't belong in a serious report system. In the eyes of little children every line out their is equal for them. It are just kids. They don't known the differents between Negative Attitude and Verbal Abuse. They can't cross a line between these things. I really think riot should remove some of these report options:

  • Harassment: Offensive Language
  • Harassment: Verbal Abuse
  • Griefing: Assisting Enemy Team
  • Unskilled Player
  • Refuse to Communicate With Team
  • Leaving the Game/AFK
  • Negative Attitude
  • Inappropriate Name
  • Spamming

Secondly a new rule will have to be add to the system. This include a warning message when you decide to report someone:

Warning: Sending false reports will count a report against your own.

Players that frequently send-in false reports will recieve a punishment that include:

  • Temporary Report Ban: Unable to report other players
  • Temporary Game Ban
  • (Permanent Game Ban)

This higher punishment on false reports would slow down the false reports by a hugh amount and maybe players will finaly respect the system.

New: The Rate System

The rate system is a new system that includes rating people, sending tickets and honor people:

First off all, every player will now see 2 bars on his profile:

  • Behavior Bar
  • Skills Bar

These 2 bars are only visible to te player itself. Both Behavior as Skill will start with 50% and will increase or decrease depending how other players rate them after a game. Having a low bar will not grant you a single punishment. However when you actualy get reported by the report system. The punish will be effected the the status of your bar.

Behavior Bar Example: You often reported with verbal abuse and the system finds you guilty. Let's say you normaly deserve 20 chat restrictions. The system checks your behavior bar and it's currently rated on 60%. So when the system checks this he known you already have been improved despite you only now will recieve your punishment. So let's say that the system now gives you only 18 chat restrictions. But it can also go the other way arround. Let's say you have 30% on your behavior bar the system might give you 24 chat restriction because didn't improve improve yet.

Skill Bar Example: I will continue on this one later.

The new report & rate system will be accesed by one single button rather than 2:

Behavior

  • [Ticket]
  • 1: Unhealthy
  • 2: Negative
  • 3: Neutral
  • 4: Healthy
  • 5: Positive
  • [Friendly]

Skills

  • [Ticket]
  • 1: Unskilled
  • 2: Less Skilled
  • 3: Average
  • 4: Good
  • 5: Very Good
  • [Honnorable]

Report Warning: Sending false reports will count a report against your own.

This leads us to sending a ticket: Sending a Ticket will be similar as sending a report. But their is a hugh differents when it comes to priority and punishment. You can send a ticket towards player behavior or skill. This system will replace the less serious reports like Unskilled Player and Negative Attitude. Players that really have something to say towards a player on behavior or skill perspective can do this here. These send tickets will only be visible by riot support. Sending tickets will have some impact but it's not to compair with real report.

Example Skills Ticket: When a player is frequently recieved a skills ticket an case will be generated. If the case get aswered true. The player will recieve a slight Match-Making-Rating (M-M-R and not MMR!!) drop. This system will take the skills bar into account will and drop the Match-Making-Rating higher or lower based on the percentage of the bar.

Finaly whe recieved the new honnor system. You can now honnor a player on behavior or skill.

lets be honest reporting is just a complaint department, and the toxic players report the most. I think removing the complaint department entirely would be more productive, and have a volunteer spectator program with the tribunal system. Rito's britches are big enough to make that happen.

Secondly the reports are often for stuipid shit. vaynes top so j4 leona bot. They're trolls! report! the true toxicity of the community is it's innability to let people just play the game without shoving a load of stale bullshit down other peoples throats.

I get it those people were probally nerds who got bullied in school and now they wanna be bastards on the net. tis cool w/e man.

I do agree with you though, this system isn't working.

I think there are a few things you're misunderstanding about the current system.

  1. Punishments do result from reports. Serious punishments. People who keep getting reported are getting two-week bans or lengthy chat restrictions. Some of these players will be ineligible for ranked rewards. Some are no longer able to queue for ranked. Some receive permabans. Your reports aren't being tossed in the trash.

  2. False reports are not a serious problem. I'm sure everyone gets reported once in a while. There are some players who will report a whole bunch of people when they're mad. The system already has the ability to determine that these are false reports, based on what the reported player said before, during, and after the game...what the reporter said...did anyone else report that player...does this player ever get reported, etc. Anyone who does this regularly gets their "report weight" reduced so their reports don't really do anything anymore. There is no pressing reason to threaten people every time they file a report, because the false reporters are doing minimal harm and are already under control. If you believe that you have been unfairly punished due to a whole lot of false reports, the odds are very high that you're wrong and the punishment was deserved.

  3. Riot doesn't really care how skillful you think other players are. Players who do well win more games. Players who win more games move up in rank. If you run into a player who you think is bad, it doesn't really matter. You're no expert (neither am I). Your opinion on whether they should have lower MMR is irrelevant because all that really matters is which team won. The Unskilled Player report doesn't do anything. Riot has it there as an outlet for people who feel the need to express their overwhelming dismay that someone didn't do well at a video game. They really really do not need players' input to determine which division each player belongs in.

  1. Permabans are intended to stop people from playing the game if it is determined that they will continue ruining games no matter what Riot does to persuade them to reform. Riot has issued time bans for flagrant misuse of the report system before, but it seems unlikely that they will ever factor that into a permaban decision.

  2. If you want to discuss ways that the system can be improved, awesome. I'm all ears. If you want to say that you're positive that the current report system does not work the way Riot says it does, there's no point in talking, is there?

  3. You're quoting from the wiki, and it is incorrect. MMR (or M-M-R or Matchmaking Rating, whatever you want to call it) is not affected by Unskilled Player reports. Confirmed by Riot. I can't get you that info from my phone but I have it bookmarked at home and will update the post in a couple hours.

Lyte, one last question about the tribunal. Does the "unskilled player" report really do something? Does it lower the hidden ELO of a player?

  • It doesn't do anything automatically, so it's impossible for a player to 'troll' another player and lower their Elo. However, we do use the reports for other things but they are always reviewed by human eyes first.

But is it used only for statistics or could it lower the player's ELO in the end of the manual process?

  • We've done both in the past. These days, matchmaking is pretty decent at placing players where they need to be, so we're doing fewer and fewer manual shifts in Elo.
