How does ranked match making work?

I am in B5 but I have been playing vs people in silver. How does that work? When I am in silver will I be playing VS people in gold? Do they just try to make it where you can not advance? I am confused about it. I would think you would be playing people either the same rank as you or people one rank higher. Unless you will skip straight to silver from B5.

I am not trying to QQ or anything. I just find it kind of strange. I have been doing just fine. But I do not think I will be doing so good if I ever make it to Gold 5((My goal for s5)) and them I am playing people in Plat.
