One Player's Takeaway from A41:MM

With All For One: Mirror Match winding down, I'd just like to share some thoughts I had with it overall.

  • It's a great idea in theory. I think I like it playing out on HA. However in practice, it needs a little more refinement.
  • Not all champs are created equally on the mode. From my own experiences champs that require skillshots and tactics are the best. Those requiring one or the other are second, and everyone else is third or lower.
  • Certain champs just don't scale well to 5 of a kind or don't bring enough to the game when there's 5 of them. Also 5 of some champs have little to no counterplay potential when there's 5 of them.
  • Dodgers suck hard in this mode. You've got to wait 30 second for the selection process. Then you get a champ (maybe you won) and have to wait up to 45 seconds only for someone to dodge out. Nothing deflates you more than winning only to see someone dodge out.
  • It's too hard to play the champ you want to and see what it's like 5v5. HA really needs a blind pick mode (another post). But I think MM needs some sort of system where you pick your champ and once there's 5 (or 10) people who agree with you a match starts just with that champ.
  • Some champs are over picked which really turns the map into a chore after having to play that champ 5 times.
  • I hate Ezreal more than ever. See the point above.
  • At my MMR, I don't think people are taking champ selection seriously enough. Someone picking a high skill floor champ, like Lee Sin, would just be a disaster since most of the players on your team can't play him well enough to justify the pick.
  • Picking champs not that many people play or play well, can also be disastrous. If you are the only person on your team who knows that champ, and you don't carry hard, your team is going to lose.
  • Picking champs that can snowball either way is also risky... if the other team gets ahead, they are staying ahead because they've got 5 hard snowballers and you've got 5 champs that can't come back when getting snowballed.
  • Champs that clear well also need to be able to tower siege well in this mode to be a good pick. If the other side can clear minions as fast as you can and you can't poke them out or siege them, all they need to do is turtle and the game turns into waiting to see who makes the mistake first. That's not fun.
  • Champs that can't initiate well are problematic. If you don't have the tools to charge in and start a fight, provoking a team fight becomes a lot more difficult. Doubly so if you can't poke at range.
  • Some champs are broken in MM. Blitz has no counterplay and it turns into a game of tokyo subway grabbers. Vayne's W stacks with other Vanyes. If 3 vanyes focus you, you are insta-dead and no armor or health will save you.
  • Teemo vs Teemo is fun as long as someone grabs a lightbringer or oracles. I can see why people like to play him. Still, it becomes a complicated game of minesweeper post 6.
