This First Strike was very poorly done in my opinion

I was suspicious and had my reservations about it ever since it was first announced

the Original First Strike was simple and easy to get behind, you rewarded players for paying full price for the PROJECT skins on release, instead of waiting until they were on sale with the special borders

but now skins aren't on sale when they're released, everyone who wants the skin has to pay full price, and, i dont have a problem with that, im often happy to

what i was not happy with, was awkwardly forcing in the new crafting like some gimmick you're trying to shoe-horn in to force more people to use it

don't get me wrong, crafting is fun, i grinded for Hextech Annie. but hiding the First Strike Borders behind this completely awkward system just feels disappointing, i dont feel happy to buy the chests to get the border for all 3 skins, i feel forced to

from what ive seen you can only get a total of 12 Cores only using IP, enough for one single Border that means at minimum most, without being lucky and getting augment fragments, id need to get 5 more chests for 1500 RP more than one of the PROJECT Skins themselves, and thats not even mentioning having to wait yet another week for the Disruption Cache to get 7 out of the free 12

Last First Strike : buy a skin, get a border This First Strike : buy a skin, then buy some more chests and then maybe you can get the borders

Yeah, I know, its not so grossly overpriced that everyone is gonna rise up about it and yeah, i know, im still going to actually do it whether or not im gritting my teeth

but at the end of the day i feel like it was overall a negative experience for me, instead of a fun little event for everyone to get behind. even though it won't make a difference i still had to voice my opinion if people didn't, then nobody would

I have to admit, I enjoy the hextech crafting system in general, and I think the way they've tied the new PROJECT stuff into the hextech crafting system is pretty cool. So with that said, I totally grant you that if you don't already like hextech, First Strike might feel like they're shoehorning it into the system.

However, I do want to point out a couple things, because I feel like you've potentially misrepresented First Strike crafting somewhat. (Sorry for the wall of text -- I was just doing the math on all of this myself, and thought maybe writing it out here might be useful to someone.)

  • First of all, the starter caches already come with a summoner icon for 750 IP. Compared to the Oblivion summoner icon (available alongside Dark Star Thresh for what, 1500 IP?), this already seems like a pretty good deal.
  • If you get all the starter caches and the Disruption cache, you end up with five Augment Cache fragments. Using three of them to make a Cache, you end up with a total of 12 Cores, just like you said. But for that total expenditure of 3750 IP, you end up with the following: five summoner icons, one of the three First Strike borders, a skin shard, a hextech loot drop, a PROJECT: Overdrive blueprint, and two remaining Augment shards (with a chance at a third). Again, seems like a pretty good deal compared to other opportunities to get skins/icons/etc. with IP instead of RP.
  • I think you misspoke regarding the number of Augment Caches necessary to get all three borders; you'd need to get five more at MAXIMUM, not at minimum. If you get even a single Augment fragment (to round out the leftover two from the starters/Disruption), you'll have two more Cores, which is enough for a second border already. And each of those caches contains not just Cores, but the equivalent of about one and a half hextech chests' worth of crafting stuff.
  • Someone correct me if I'm wrong on this, but I believe that makes Augment Caches at least as efficient as buying packs of hextech chests even if you totally disregard the Cores and the chance at more Augment shards.

Overall, this First Strike actually seems much more similar to the previous one than you might expect: that is, it's ultimately a way to reward people for buying the new skins early rather than just waiting till they go on sale someday. If you liked the first one, my estimates suggest that you're reasonably likely to get equal or greater rewards this time around if you're buying into all the PROJECT stuff.

Anyway, I hope these comments end up being helpful for you or anyone else trying to evaluate all this First Strike stuff!

And Riot claims they are not greedy....

So what do I need to do to get the Ekko border? So far I bought the Ekko icon/box thing, but do I just buy the Kat's and Ashe's as well? Then what?

So basically I just read that in a couple of days, they will release phase 2 of the Project event. You get a new overdrive cache for 1500ip and roll a random project overdrive skin, (excluding ekko, ashe, and katarina) needing 11 cores to unlock it. Ok, this part frustrates me the most. I have 6 out of 7 project overdrive skins and I feel upset how Riot double-crossed people who bought most of the overdrive bundle/skins before, while others who didn't buy them gets an opportunity to obtain a free project skin. I shouldn't complain but it is plainly unfair since you cant really do anything to obtain an owned skin. At least disenchant the skin blueprint for an augment cache. I have 1/7 chance of getting that project zed otherwise, ill just use my cores to unlock the icon. [zombie-nunu-bummed]

Remember, chillrun, we here at Riot care. We care very deeply about our money your customer satisfaction.

The fact that Riot does not care about anything other than money is hardly new. And this is coming from someone who earned this Wraith Icon. They want your money, plain and simple. That's it.

i agree completely, its even more annoying the fact you have to buy chests to get more than 1 border

Just dropping in to say that I agree that forcing players into the hextech crafting system to get the borders is just a dickmove and is just an attempt at potentially milking more money from players who want them. I also want to say that I am very disappointed that we just got a lazy skin preview video instead of a badass cinematic animation like Overdrive. Rito pls.
