Let Me Share A Story With You

CHAPTER 1 Last night I was feeding hard. I made the dumb decision to listen to my teammates instead of playing someone I'm comfortable with. I choose Tryndamere in champ select. The enemy laner was Aatrox , jungler was Vi , and I am significantly higher rank than the laner. So I was feeling smug.

CHAPTER 2 By five minutes I was 0-3. Vi was camping top and I kept chasing Aatrox expecting a noob mistake like for him to fight me on full rage. Problem is, I was the one making noob mistakes and I was so distraught I was fighting and pushing when I definitely shouldn't have.

CHAPTER 3 My team didn't flame me ONCE. Mind you, this was ranked. Gragas was our jungler and was kinda focusing bot. I felt like being angry at him but I knew I was just being stupid. Anyhow; Aatrox was getting cocky since he was a item 3153 ahead of me. Gragas ganked and I got the kill. Sweet. But I was nervous I would just be worth more gold for the next kill.

CHAPTER 4 I was still feeling salty and was prepared to push hard but Gragas said: "Tryn, don't push yet, I'll be right back top". And he was. We killed Aatrox again; now we were practically equal gold since I got shut-down gold and wasn't worth much earlier on. Guess what? I didn't get super fed but we won the game which blew my mind; I had already made up my mind that this was a lost cause.

TLDR; being a jungler gives you incredible power in terms of helping your laners get fed and emotional support. Gragas single-handedly won us that game just by calming me down and helping me out. Don't get egotistical and treat a feeding laner as a lost cause; instead, help him out and offer advice!

So the lesson here is that if you're a jungler, help a losing lane?

Pretty sure that flies in the face of every other piece of jungling advice ever given. Seems like this is an exception to the rule. Generally you don't want to bother with a feeding lane because the teammate doing badly will most likely continue to do bad... and as you said, just be worth more when they die.

no. the lesson here is to

  1. Not flame a losing lane (they already know that they blew it themselves)
  2. Not completely ignore a losing lane either because if the enemy laner gets too far ahead that is a problem as well) 3 Reassure the losing laner. Even if you do not help him out, give him tips to stay safe and explain your reasoning why the impact you are making in the other lanes might be worth the abandonment of his lane.

Most teams resolve to "shut up, you suck, you feed, you deserve no help" rather than "we know you are having a hard time. play safe, try not to die, farm as good as you can. come lategame the lanes that are now ahead will balance out that you didnt do too well."

He probably would have just tilted harder and totally threw otherwise, but obviously Gragas helped out in more ways than just that.

But it was Gragas calming him down and preventing him from tilting that helped, instead of just abandoning him.

Who knows, if Aatrox had got fed he could have carried the game. You never know, small details can escalate quickly.

This is quite inspirational, and that Gragas knew what he was doing.

Despite what League Counter may say, Tryndamere does not in fact counter Aatrox. The two match-ups draws parallels with many other top lane match-ups such Nasus vs Riven or Fiora vs Jax.

Eventually, Tryndamere will beat Aatrox almost 100% of the time. However, before level 6 Aatrox can easily out trade Tryndamere by briefly engaging him with the third AA on blood price and jump away before Tryndamere can use his higher DPS advantage.

The Gragas helped you at a time when you held the advantage, and you were able to save your lane.

Isn't it also to say that just because you're losing lane you shouldn't just auto-assume the game is lost? You said yourself that you felt like that game was unwinnable, if Gragas had felt the same way it surely would have been a loss.

Some people are just impatient idealists who would rather just end the game and start a new one with a 50/50 chance of winning than actually do hard work to earn a win from a perceived position of being behind. I say "idealist" because "ideally we'll never be behind at any point, and the moment we are, we're wasting time trying to win."

Whenever I watch people streaming I notice for the most part two types of streamers, people who are only focused on themselves, they say things like "I should've done this, I knew he'd do that, I shouldn't have engaged, I'm ahead in CS" and then there's the streamers who spend most of the time trying to reassure their team once the person on their team who's losing inevitably goes on tilt. Those people are like Gragas, they know that helping and reassuring the person on tilt is more important than just focusing on their own gameplay and becoming the solo-carry (even if that's ultimately exactly what they end up doing.)

It really really helps when the jungler is the 2nd type of person, because as the jungler it's your job to pay attention to the other 4 people on the team and do what you can to help all of them. Some people look at it like "the jungler has to pay attention to the other 4 people so he knows who not to help." Guess what, this just sets you up for failure because if you never help that one person who's behind, the inevitable mid to late game 5 v 5's become effective 4 v 5's because your team sucks at teamwork and just abandoned the guy who was behind.

In other words, you don't deserve to lose a game because 1 out of 5 people fed. You do deserve to lose a game where 5 out of 5 people can't work as a team however.
