Mastery System Should Be Tied To Ranked

Hear me out before you downvote, please.

I feel that, while I'm not a huge fan of a barrier of entry into ranked, I feel that someone should at the very least have a champ mastery of 1, if not 2 at the very most to play a champion in ranked.

I say this, because I'm noticing more and more people playing champions in ranked that they have never played more than once at most in ARAM, or never, and it tends to show.

Just this week

  • First time Shyv jungle - 0/4/1 did not gank one single time (not exaggerating)
  • First time Thresh support - 0/9 - Not sure they even play ranked as they asked how to build nearly everything from start to finish
  • First time Ryze - Decided to just afk because he didn't know how to play Ryze against Darius and "couldn't find a guide".

Just a few examples, but really, no one should be playing a champ for the first time in ranked, ever. It makes your chances of being successful so much slimmer.

Couple problems:

  1. The system just came out. I played over 300 games with thresh last season but maybe 10 this season. Why shouldn't I be able to play with him??
  2. If I got put into the adc role, the only one I'm iffy about, then I won't have an adc because I didn't practice with them? All in all it won't work because of #2

While I agree with the OP's goal.... this post is on point why it won't work.

That is a different issue. I said this in a different thread that I feel the mastery system should also be retroactive. I see no reason that it isn't.

I have mastery on nearly every champion since I've played for a while, but it doesn't show that with the actual mastery system.

Obviously there are different cases and what not, but the fact is, someone shouldn't be first picking top and going a champ they have never played in normals, let alone ranked.

That is my point. There should be something in place to keep that from happening, and if the mastery system actually worked like it should, similar to how it works in Smite for example, it would curve that.

To be fair, even Smite isn't retroactive. I transferred to Xbox and only the skins transferred, I have to gain mastery...again. And it's much harder there

Smite started the ranked system with it though, so people at least know what they are getting into and what to expect from it. This system is new, and realistically pointless, as even getting to max rank doesn't show mastery, it just shows you have played a champion.

The thing is, I think even knowing what a champion does for a few normal games is a lot more than enver playing them in pvp at all. I think ranked could benefit from it, but unless it becomes retroactive, since there are more than 50 champions unlike not many Gods in Smite, then it will never work, especially since LoL is many years old.

That would be pretty unfair to people who have played before mastery came out since they wouldn't have credit for most of their play time. But really my biggest issue is that mastery is meaningless. Its just a participation badge.

As I've said multiple times, and really is my own fault for not stating it in this thread's OP, the mastery system should, and should have been retroactive, not starting from scratch.

It is a great tool that is essentially pointlessly cosmetic, with potential to be helpful.

Riot just hates restrictions something fierce, but it hurts ranked to allow people that have played a champion literally never, or only in 2-3 bot or custom games, to play a champ that you have little chance of being successful with, especially in lower ranks.

I 100% agree with all of the arguments here against my point, but I think if the mastery system was retroactive, that would solve a lot of problems. Of course so would a team builder ranked, but that is at least "eventually" coming.

I don't really know much about the mastery system since I never cared about it because it is completely superficial. So I don't really know much about how its scoring people. I assume the reason it isn't retroactive is a technical limitation but they may have just wanted it to be a clean slate so everyone would want to earn it.

I hate the mastery system. It embodies so many of the things I hate. Its purely a grind, it sorta gives the impression that it is skill based but isn't at all. Maybe im reading to much into it and it is really only supposed to show you've played a champion, which is pretty disappointing.

well i had the same idea, but it has some problems in that you need 16 champions to play ranked because of picks/bans. this means, you would basically have champion mastery on 16 champions.

i mean, sure i buy that shit but i never intend to play 16 different champions. i play 3 champions frequently and it would molest me so hard if i was forced to stop playing ranked right now (as EVERYONE IN THE WORLD would be) and have to level up the champion mastery on my other 13 champions first before i can go and play ranked. thats like 5 games for every champion if i win so about 70 normals until i can play ranked again or so. god, that would hurt so much!

so yes, the idea is good but the realization bears too many problems.
