Should I get reported?

First of all, I never talk trash in-game to opponents.... let alone to my own teammates... But anyways, I go midlane against a Zed... and maybe it's cause of my convenient misclick that allowed him to get a single kill on me... but then he proceeded to talk sooo much trash to me in game... Even at this point I didn't even respond negatively... just simpply ignored and carried on.... (but i'd be lying if i said that what he said didn't actually get under my skin... and piss me off...) ... this also continued for the next 10 mins.. or so....either way... after laning phase ended... my team and I proceeded to rock them and win the game without any issues... it was then that i started to chat directly to zed and most definitely rub it in his face and talk some minor trash of my own.... his silence was everything i needed to know that i won...

my question is... you guys think i was justified in talking shit? possibly to the point of making him feel bad? if not should i have been reported?? even though i was not the one to instigate it at all?

No. In fact, All Chat recently supported League players being casually toxic in these ways as a 'strategy' to win.

As a real reason, though, no. It's going to happen to anyone and everyone. It's the people who -constantly- talk shit, who ALWAYS spam taunt, who -never stop- spam-laughing that need the reports. Trash talking here and there isn't bad, but being a total prick about it deserves the report.

Personally I do not endorse trash talking for any reason in games. I'm there to have fun, and call me crazy, but sharing rude remarks is not my idea of fun. I do not even play with all chat turned on in order to stay away from those kind of people.

That said note that Riots report and punishment policies do not give amnesty for provocation. IE two wrongs do not make a right. If another player was pushing you to the edge with their comments I suggest muting them and if you feel they did something wrong also report them in the post game. If in a moment you are not sure if you can get in trouble for saying something it is almost always better to say nothing at all.

I haven't had my all chat on all season. What's funny is I've had people flaming me all game and never knew because they were doing it in all chat to the other team, and the only reason I found out was because a friend was spectating and text messaged me. There are times I wanna tell the enemy wp when they get a kill on me, or type a simple LOL when I get a good kill on them, but oh well. TBH though turning it off spares you the viewing of so much toxicity. I can't see me ever turning it back on. I mute my own teams sometimes. If I have a rough start....I mute the whole team. If I'm supporting and my carry is getting rekt but I'm not, I mute them before they even start talking sometimes. Whole team getting rekt? Muting everyone before the mudslinging begins. If not I might be baited into an argument. I don't do very well listening to people's bullshit.

On the flip side, before I used to have my all chat off.....I didn't talk much trash in all chat, but in situations like the one you described.....I definitely used to rub salt in their wounds. It wouldn't be directed at the other team, just the guy with the big mouth. Usually that guy is even more annoying to his team than he is to you. I used to tell my teammates to stfu talkin to the other team. Like dude you've been typing back and forth with the other team nonstop for 10 minutes. Now I don't even see it anymore thanks to all chat being off. Sometimes I do wish my all chat was on just to LOL at the gnashing of teeth. But I'm lazy and have to open in game menu's and shit......first world problems.

id rather have an extremely verbally toxic person than an afk or feeder on purpose

I think your situation hinges entirely on what the trash talking and rubbing it in his face actually was.

Personally I am a lot more lenient towards things between opposing teams. You aren't trying to work together. It is infant your goal to beat them and chat can be a way to further that. Most importantly there aren't really any downsides to muting an opponent, unlike team mates who you need to work with. That said, its a fine line between a little banter between opponents and harassment.
