I decided to push for gold. Silver 2 was easy to attain but I cant seem to play well. I keep getting matched against (and with) mostly low to mid gold and I'm just not good enough to beat them without my teammates carrying. Should I just play safe or what?

This will seem counterproductive but the answer is to feed. Pick two or three champs for each role and feed your ass off until you know what the champion can do and when.
You will lose games and you will feed. But the end result is knowing a champion very well. Went through about 30-40 games before I knew what ap trist could or could not do in detail. This was back before her rework when ap trist was a thing. Knowing your champion is a guaranteed way to improve and to live longer. Also it helps your decision making quite a bit.
Pocket picks are also pretty good. Champions that aren't currently fotm or haven't been in a while are good bets. Your champions won't get banned out and you have the cheese factor to give you the advantage. Not many know what an anivia can do. Abuse her broken e then kaw at the enemy as they all in you and only get your passive.
This next part is simple and no one seems to do it down here in our elo. Buy wards and upgrade your trinket. Much harder to get ganked when you see them coming. Multiman dives are the exception x.x
Practice more champions. If you know what the enemy can do and when they can kill you then you're in the advantage. When would you go in for the kill?
This one is a bit harder to learn but it works wonders. Watch the minimap. All the time. glance at it often. It will save you. And here is the hardest one. Don't get tunnelvision. You don't have to get a kill. You don't have to absolutely stomp your lane. You need to live and set the enemy behind. Greed is not good. don't chase people. Even more so if it isn't warded.
Learn wave manipulation. Learn how to freeze and slow push lanes. These are priceless. Can the enemy all in you and kill you outside the tower? Is their jungler active? If the answer is yes then freeze it as close to your tower as you can. When a lane is empty set up a slow push and leave it and do team stuffs.
