Why do people pick riven into nasus?

I'm honestly curious. I don't remember ever losing this match up. Maybe its just nasus experience but I mean its not hard at all.

Because once upon a time, during Season 3 particularly, when penetration was first changed so that % pen was factored first, and Riven's Q was better, she actually did counter Nasus, and it's just something that is no longer true but continues to be parroted.

The rivens who can animation cancel generally dominate this match up. At least in season 5...

A good Nasus doesnt lose in any matchup anyway.

It's because a long time ago, people decided that the best way to beat a Nasus is to crush his laning. Thus, came the search for early game bullies, and Rumble and Riven rose as "amazing" picks against Nasus. Good rumble players would stomp lower tier Nasus players and a lot of people quickly came to believe that Nasus was a horrible pick against early game champs like these. Other honorable mentions for "supposed" Nasus counters came to be Darius and Renekton, because the community thought they had godlike early games. I at first believed this to be true until I actually played the match ups.

They all go in Nasus's favor. While they could bully the Nasus with a cheese level 1 or 2, none of them could actually match his lane sustain. Renekton came close but once he used his Q to sustain he became worthless in trades. But when people clamored for Nasus nerfs (the ones who actually realized how strong Nasus's laning was), they were immediately met with "why didn't you shut him down early? you fucking suck." And thus came a vicious cycle of people spamming these "lane bullies" against Nasus and getting met with more waves of "you're shit at this game uninstall."

Even now a lot of people believe shutting Nasus down is the key to winning a game against him, and if he doesn't have 20 deaths by 10 minutes it's gg you lost because now he has stacks. What most people still don't realize is Nasus is inherently a worthless teamfighter unless fed. Not just farmed, but FED (or if his team is fed, either works). He gets kited insanely hard by decent players, and thus is kind of forced to just sit top and splitpush and farm. Even late game nearing 1k stacks, he's still very weak in teamfights because he can't damage armored tanks very well. So the best way to deal with him is to just ignore him and take over the entire map with your team while he farms top, unable to do much in fights. But people still insist on picking lane bullies against him and expecting a free win as they gleefully cheese you level 3 with ignite.

Riven has always had the matchup be favorable, especially early on. Nasus being about as threatening as newborn schnauzer in the early stages of the game, let's Riven potentially snowball very quickly very early on.

If Nasus can survive until Frozen Heart, it's much more difficult to do anything, but it's a low elo pub stomp thing for the most part.

gg report minions feeding my lane

Nasus big counter measure in top lanes is the ability to slow with wither. Riven rely's almost entirely on her ability's to not only do damage but soak it and hop away. This is just my 2 cents.

dangopee12/28/2015, 10:20:08 PM4 votes

But yeah I agree Riven is not a very good counter. Usually Susan can even give her a kill really early and still come back stronger. The problem is shes too squishy so after a few stacks she just starts getting chunked hard. I think Darius and Renekton are much worse for Nasus.

EndlessSorcerer12/28/2015, 10:28:40 PM4 votes

Riven can handle Nasus quite well in a 1v1 until he gets a significant amount of stacks and finishes his first major armor item.

However, Riven has to play aggressively to win this lane, which forces her to overextend, and she doesn't have great harass under tower. Her AoE abilities pretty much force her to push the lane when trading, making her an easy target for Nasus' jungler to gank due to Wither.

riven with animation cancelling can already bully the shit out of nasus before he ever gets his first stack.

it doesnt get better from there on.

especially with thunderlords.

Riven is not effected by susan's slow because of dashes and she can shield his q and if done right can all in lv 1 2 and 3 after some cdr items her stuns and knock ups dashes and shield basically almost have no cooldown although to be fair she does take some skill kappa.

Camp Top12/28/2015, 9:24:55 PM2 votes

I guess its just the riven mains in my elo or something lol

The Sword Saint12/28/2015, 11:50:25 PM2 votes

Because people expect to be able to use an early-midgame champion like riven to punish a mid-lategame champion who is supposed to be weak early, but nasus has enough tools and sustain to survive any kind of early punishment long enough to outscale, as long as the riven isn't far better at her champion than nasus's player. Its a problem with nasus, not riven.

Ackelope12/29/2015, 12:32:14 AM2 votes

Back when I played Riven frequently, a few months ago, I quite liked the matchup because in every instance I had played it the Nasus I was against didn't play safe enough in the early levels, when Riven is stronger, and I could get some easy kills. Sure, he eventually outscaled, like he always does, but it was more or less a guaranteed win-lane situation for me at the time. I don't think it's really a counter, but each champion is significantly stronger than the other depending on the time in the game.

I am honestly baffled how Riven is expected to beat anything with Tank as it's main class.

PDE5 Inhibitors12/29/2015, 2:37:13 PM1 votes

Because they hope to cheese bad Nasus players.

Fowus12/28/2015, 11:43:57 PM1 votes

Yeah I once picked nasus and was against riven and beat her even with sub par runes

MunchCrunchLunch12/29/2015, 12:49:37 AM1 votes

because she can just bother u and dash out. but its not really a counter after you build a hell of armor and get 500 stacks.

The Bearded Bard12/29/2015, 12:51:42 AM1 votes

I dunno, I don't understand why people pick anything into Nasus. I tend to just queue dodge because I don't feel like putting myself through the hellish boredom that is laning against Nasus.

LOL Spammer12/29/2015, 3:28:27 PM1 votes

True true.

KING ATTILA12/28/2015, 11:57:42 PM1 votes

Nasus is insane...

Mr Broken Wings12/29/2015, 12:17:01 AM1 votes

Deaths dance riven with 45% cdr and maxed e and lifesteal /qss ignores you ALL match till you get 700+ stacks. With the right build riven can even let you stack this season and win the lane~
