The Do's and Dont's of trading stance

I've noticed a lot of people learning about the trading stance recently, and applying it in ways that actually put them at a disadvantage in the long run. Here are a few tips I've learned to make it more efficient

What it is: Walking up to get free harass or zone when YOUR minion is about to die. This will force the enemies to chose between taking damage or missing farm

Do: -Get in a free auto while they're in animation for their auto -Use a strong poke spell for guaranteed damage, they will not be able to dodge without missing cs -Transition into an all in if the enemies are low enough for you to completely kill them -Try to capitalize on them going for the cannon. They won't want to miss this one and you can usually get a ton of free damage

Don't: -Stay in minion range if you use an auto to harass. This will soak damage back to you and negate all the free damage you got on them so you're equal again. -Use spells to harass on every minion, if you do you won't have mana to all in them later. Use autos sometimes instead, it racks up. -Force the use of trading stance when you know minions you can cs are low. You will miss cs this way, and unless it transitions into a big zone or cs lead you not gain much out of it. -You don't have to all in every time, this is something I see a lot. It usually pushes the wave if you don't have all single target and then you are open to being ganked.

With all these things in mind, you should be able to use trading stance more efficiently.

How to counter this.

Walk up for a cs a little early, cancel your aa and sidestep. Then go back and kill the minion.

Works 80% of the time against Zeds trying to poke.

Not to derail the topic but this is also some pretty decent information: https://www.youtube.com/user/unswlolsoc

It's where I first heard of Trading Stance, however your bullet pointed list is really good!

Maybe this will help the people who like seeing things in videos or hearing more about this topic you covered really well...

"Don't: -Stay in minion range if you use an auto to harass."

This. I recently faced a Panth as first time Leona top lane, and until I overextended and got ganked, I was able to hold my own or better in trades just because I knew how to avoid drawing minion aggro and he didn't.

Honestly? I didn't know this had an actual name. I just literally did a lot of these things from my own practice as I played.

As a S4 support main, I knew some of this but not all of it. Thanks!

I didn't know there was a name for this.

A lot of it seems like common sense.

Something to be careful of, sometimes trading can cause you to inadvertently push the lane, because if you tank minions repeatedly due to aggro swap then the enemy minions focus you while your minions focus the enemy minions. It's just something to keep in mind because it's screwed me over multiple times when the enemy is able to set up a freeze where you can get ganked.

Yep. Good list.

This is one thing I learned as support is to look at my minions health and the drop harass when one is low. Normally that results in them getting CS for poke, getting poked and no CS, or them dodging poke and no CS. Especially helpful on a low health Soraka cause you know they want that cannon so you get free health on it. That and you can zone quite effectively by just waiting for one minion (cannon or melee prefered) to get low and go for poke then instead of just poking the minute your spell is up.

Nah fam, just play someone who also heals when doing damage so you don't need to bother not taking damage in the first place.
