Riot Lore, PLEASE listen, just this once. Hear me out.

I think you're seriously misunderstanding people's hate.

This has never been a "mashup" game, like Tekken vs Street Fighter, Super Smash Brothers, Jump Superstars, etc.

If these had been established characters BEFORE, and LoL had come about as a "hey, see your favorite characters beat each other up!", THEN you would not need a reason and could do what you're doing.

But that's not the case. The fact is, this game IS, and should be tied to the characters. No Summoners? Fine. No Institute of War, AKA League of Legends, for which the game is named?... What? I don't even. Just make a new game if you guys are bored of making LoL, don't trash this one's history.

I don't give two shits about axe-wielding soldier man, I care about Darius, the supreme embodiment of Noxian Ideals, who joins the league as an outlet for warlike tendencies.

I don't give a fuck about some Darth Vader impersonator, I care about Kassadin, the man who has seen the void, who lost his daughter to it, who was warped by it and joins to the league to fight vigorously against it's impending invasion.

For starters, in a game called League of Legends the League of Legends is core

Second, nobody cares about these characters when they're just random people who do stuff in a world

Third, providing no explanation to the 5v5 game, I don't care how you justify it, ruins the game, kills immersion, devalues characters, and is a bad decision. No matter what "lore" you do unattached to the game, it will feel like a spinoff, because it will be a spinoff.

I understand if you feel the Summoners and Institute are restrictive, because they are, because that is the entire point of their existence in the world. If you want to tear down the League, then do that. Make it an event or something. Make the first faction battle you guys have done in years, and through it bring the downfall of the institute and the summoner system. Have the world begin crumbling to the magic that is now going rampant, that the Institute was designed to stop. Do whatever. BUT TIE IT INTO THE GAME. Without being a part of the game it's pointless, because the game is the "core" of League of Legends' lore.

Make the world into one at war, like it would be without the institute. Make Nexus' be insanely valuable wartime artifacts, allowing immortality to those who control them. Make the battles be about 10 champions fighting to gain control over each other's Nexus, destroying it as the only way to permanently kill the enemy champions.

Sure, it might be darker, but that will enrich every character. Ezreal's lighthearted, cocky nature (which, now that you've ruined the character described by making him "embarassed", his total removal from the game is all that can be taken away from him) would be far more meaningful in a world trapped in wartime.

The summation of what I'm saying is this: I'm glad to see real lore development, and I'm glad to see you guys willing to take big steps, and, frankly, I'm glad to see the summoners and institute gone, but you are not enhancing the lore by separating it from the game entirely, you are ruining it. There are a billion less constrictive ways to keep them tied together than the summoner's/institute, there is no justification for you guys saying "pshh, yeah, dunno why these 10 guys fight each other" instead of making a meaningful connection to the game that started the lore in the first place and the characters in the world.

Sorry if that hurts your dream of a League MMO or a League Movie or whatever (hint: it COMPLETELY DOES NOT, but w/e). That's the reality, however. You guys trying to disconnect the game and the narrative is lazy, and it is going to do nothing but cheapen both.

All that said, if you guys decide to take a better route, you have all the support I can provide you. Just keep in mind EVERY time you guys have ignored people like me telling you you're making a BAD decision with lore, you've never done anything except completely disappoint the fans of lore you change. Particularly with regards to champs. Several friends of mine outright quit at Karma, who had been playing since beta. Had to convince my GF to stay after she saw how you immensely cheapened Anivia's character, and had to do it again just now with Skarner's character. LISTEN TO US FOR ONCE, JUST ONCE.

It would be so simple, the League has failed, a new Rune War is dawning and the people of Runeterra turn to the many champions, heroes and horrors who've proven themselves on the Fields of Justice to defend them/abuse them as weapons to conquer their foes. Swain and J3 are on the warpath, the Void is coming and newcomers rise to turn back the dark tide, bring an end to everything, or simply line their pockets to prove themselves as a Champion. With your Institute in ruins, where do you stand Summoner?

too bad it ain't happening, neerner neener nah nah :P

DarkerGray9/5/2014, 12:15:04 AM30 votes

I personally think the new lore kills all the immersion you had with the game.

You are supposed to be a Summoner from the Institute of Justice, fighting for the political stability of Valoran and calling powerful champions who agreed to fight to your command. Now you're just a guy who likes to play Smash and has no actual voice in a fictional world.

With this, you're basically making the player feel further away from a world with already lackluster development. What the point of knowing Quinn's relationship with Talon if they don't mean anything to you?

The fact that the summoner is an actual character in the lore is what makes it special, not the amount of content it gets.

Jojoz9/5/2014, 1:49:12 AM21 votes

When the majority of the player base doesn't (and will never) care about the lore, why upset the dedicated minority that does? This is like if Magic the Gathering retconned planeswalkers.

You're pulling the rug out from under us, and I really loved that rug.item 3070

sp4419/5/2014, 3:29:17 AM21 votes

To Riot, I only have this to say.

You can do this.

You can retcon everything that you want.

You can completely and utterly strip players of any feeling of agency on the world.

But you need to do one thing in exchange for that.

DELIVER.

I expect constant updates to the lore, new stories constantly being told, characters developing and changing, intricate politics and cosmology, and basically make The Elder Scrolls look like shit by comparison.

This new direction is amazing because it frees you to do whatever you want? Fine, but don't you fucking sit on your hands doing nothing for eight months until the next regional event. Do NOT do anything until you do a Bilgewater event next year or some shit like that. You have your freedom, now use it, if you have any respect for your player base at all.

Athenes Lulu9/5/2014, 12:36:17 AM14 votes

If Rito mentioned that the newest Rune War destroyed the summoners, that would be great.

At least we have a reason to retcon that bullsh!t.

But no!! Not even something like that. It's too late... now how is Sona gonna address to the players now....?

Cynicatt9/5/2014, 12:34:11 AM12 votes

It is a well thought out and heartfelt post. Unfortunately it will probably fall on deaf ears... or blind eyes... since it's text.

333lom9/5/2014, 2:22:06 PM11 votes

Exactly. "Nobody cares about these characters when they're just random people who do stuff in a world." The new lore has no value, even if it's good, if it isn't connected to the game it's describing. The Institute of War was one of the core elements (I think it's the actual core), and taking it away destroys the essence of the game. This is no longer League of Legends. It's just some random MOBA game.

lorewise9/5/2014, 12:14:49 AM11 votes

There are elegant solutions to this "problem" and removing the Institute of War and Summoners is not one of them. For example:

It's called* League of Legends *right? Well then why not allow all of the lore and champion history serve as just that, a history, a telling of what was. Move the Institute and Fields of Justice to the future or make it the present but the champions themselves and the history of these champions could be Legends who no longer exist but are recreated within the Fields of Justice.

There's no reason that Champions have to be alive or present in "modern times". In fact this could lead to fascinating stories about the few "Legends" who are still alive.

There's just so much possibility being wasted by completely removing these concepts from cannon.

This discussion boils down to this:

How does Riot fund their game? Money from players.

What does the absolute lowest common denominator player like more than anything? Winning.

What does the absolute lowest common denominator player dislike more than anything? Losing.

What happens when only a very, very small segment of your playerbase actually gives a shit about the direction of your game enough to make a way-too-fucking-long post in the comment section of a thread with no likes, upvotes, bumps, whatever? That group has no power. Because group size is power. And power is money.

So, to sum up, you have a very, very large fanbase you're currently pandering to that wasn't around in the beginning of your game to watch the current lore be put in place and integrate into the community. You want their money, but they don't like that they don't understand what's going on: why is X champ Y blah-League-blah-Darius-blah-Swain? They're confused and reactionary, fickle and quick to spurn novel ideas or concepts. But you need to keep them; they're already here, correct? What's the easiest way to not stop the hype-train? Do absolutely nothing different. Welcome to the past 3 years of League.

You also have an intensely rabid, but small segment that puts in the effort and cares about your game, why people do what they do in it, why the design looks a certain way; basically, why you built the game in the first place. This group has a voice out of proportion with its size. However, your game is large. These people were your lifeblood for the early times, but you no longer need them to sustain growth. "I will not be cowed by faithful since-beta lore nerds!" you cry triumphantly. "I can do whatever I wish; I have the money. I have the power. I can make it so that this group will never leave, because they never have before. These faithful beta-nerds will still be here."

You press go, and the machine prints money. You used to remember that there was a reason outside of just making money that the game existed, but you shrug and conclude that you must have made the product to make a buck, there can be no other reason to make a game, right?

Right?

Riot please, I have NEVER been so desperate for a decision to not go through. A part of me died when you said that The league in LEAGUE OF LEGENDS does not exist. Please, please, please, look at the backlash!!!!! I beg of you guys, go back on this ill thought decision! You're destroying what makes League, LEAGUE!

Gorbache9/5/2014, 12:53:51 PM10 votes

I was wondering what the fuss was all about on the forums when I finally caught up on all the lore talk... And man this is disappointing! Personally I really liked the fact that we were summoners (and the voice action in-game about it). I really think reading all the comment that a very small minority likes the new direction. It's the second time I see a major fail from Riot recently (first one being when people complained about "Event Icons" not being available for IP). They need to listen to the majority when it's that overwhelming or they'll start losing customers.

Helmight9/5/2014, 2:00:10 AM9 votes

See, I think the primary problem I have with Riot's approach to storytelling is that they have failed to build on anything. Since I started playing League, all they've done is retcon things that they didn't like, despite the fact that it was rarely necessary. I guess now that the Lore's been reduced to rubble they can build all they want, but I do not have faith in their ability to do so given all that's happened already.

John Berserk9/4/2014, 11:55:58 PM8 votes

Expected another "RIP LORE FUKC U RIOT QQ" thread, and instead I got something that makes sense and something I agree with.

I think what Riot is doing, doing away with the old lore, is a good idea, because as both they AND you (OP) said, it is restrictive, and honestly kind of dumb.

However, while I was honestly perfectly content with them just...starting over, just like that, I do think this tying it into some kind of Runeterra-shattering event idea is much better, something that ties it into the current lore and basically sets the future up for a sort of "Part 2" to the ever-evolving story.

Some players will still be mad that you're doing away with the old lore, but oh well, cant please everyone I guess. However, I do think this would be the best way to go about it, with some kind of in-game/lore explanation, as opposed to just a logical from Riot explanation, outside of the game world.

mtman3189/5/2014, 2:35:51 AM8 votes

Welp, Riot has officially jumped the shark...

Voidzilla9/5/2014, 3:21:54 AM8 votes

My thoughts exactly on the matter.

Riot please, you once had a pretty great lore going for this game. It's such a shame to see that major parts of it seem to be getting thrown away.

AbiwonKenabi9/5/2014, 12:22:26 AM7 votes

This is coming from someone who whole-heartedly supported Riot's decision to change certain characters, like Karma, Trundle, etc. This is someone who actually enjoys the Sona rework. I'm Riot's support all the way.

Yet, I still COMPLETELY agree with the OP. Well-said.

Rito is in a cycle of self-destruction with this game making it as worse as they can at every possible turn

PsychoB0b9/5/2014, 8:43:16 AM6 votes

Why doesn't Riot do things like this? It's...ridiculous.

Baron von Jiggly9/4/2014, 10:48:54 PM6 votes

So many holes this lore update brought that won't be fixed if they go through with deleting the institute and the summoners

The Red Warden9/4/2014, 11:51:20 PM6 votes

If they take away the league it leaves me with one question.

WHO THE HELL IS JAX NOW????????

Hyrum Graff9/5/2014, 2:15:56 PM2 votes

I don't give two shits about axe-wielding soldier man, I care about Darius, the supreme embodiment of Noxian Ideals, who joins the league as an outlet for warlike tendencies.

What about Darius, the supreme embodiment of Noxian Ideals, who goes and wages war and kicks ass as an outlet for warlike tendencies?

I don't give a fuck about some Darth Vader impersonator, I care about Kassadin, the man who has seen the void, who lost his daughter to it, who was warped by it and joins to the league to fight vigorously against it's impending invasion.

What about Kassadin, the man who has seen the void, who lost his daughter to it, who was warped by it and actually goes and fights vigorously against it's impending invasion?

Second, nobody cares about these characters when they're just random people who do stuff in a world

Since we're making all the Super Smash Bros comparisons... so nobody cares about Mario and Luigi? About Bowser and Yoshi? About Princess

No matter what "lore" you do unattached to the game, it will feel like a spinoff, because it will be a spinoff.

the game is the "core" of League of Legends' lore.

I guess i just disagree with you here. Jinx has no explanation for being in the League, but I don't feel she's any less real or compelling or whatever.

There is no justification for you guys saying "pshh, yeah, dunno why these 10 guys fight each other"

This is something that people have been tossing around a lot. My question back to you is, has anybody actually established that we don't know why they fight?

What I see people saying is, "We need a reason why the Champions are fighting, even alongside their mortal enemies." They don't always realize that's what they're looking for, so they phrase it as "We need the League," but from their descriptions of what the League brings, I don't see any reason why it has to be the League.

How about we give Riot time to reveal the reason why champs are fighting in LoL, before we start assuming there isn't one?

Sorry if that hurts your dream of a League MMO or a League Movie or whatever (hint: it COMPLETELY DOES NOT, but w/e). That's the reality, however.

Why can't we have the best of both worlds? Find a reason for the champions fighting that also allows Riot to create another game with league characters, or a movie, or whatever.

Several friends of mine outright quit at Karma, who had been playing since beta.

But.. but... I love my new karma!

They said the same things when "Crisis on Infinite Earths" happened. But now it's totally cool and everyone hates "New 52"... Some people can be just so stubborn and unaccepting to change
