Just solved 99% of "toxicity" and a majority of the problems with ranked in 3 short threads.

The vaaaast majority of "toxicity" I see comes down to 3 things: trolls, afks, feeders. You attempt to fix those three things, you will see "toxicity" decrease. If you continue to try and fix "toxicity" by changing loading screen font colors, you will continue to have it. Obviously you will still have trolls and feeders, but this is a good start to automatically narrow that by a large large amount. You can then start to address the fewer individual cases one at a time (such as my Lulu running down mid lane over and over again building only Zz to "distract the enemy team". True story.). Then you will have a better game.

That didn't take too much thought, did it? Man, I should work for rito.

  2. rito will not enforce a meta also in a ranked game if two people go top then it's both of their fault if they both stay there irrespective of pick order
  3. Unranked mmr is different from ranked mmr, additionally people tend to go off-meta in unranked. Thus if I want to play a "new" champion with a minimal mastery score, I have to play vs people two leagues lower than me who are running lux/morgana bot in order to qualify for ranked? Nami was my season 3 main and her kit is the exact same, you saying that I can't play her in ranked?

Easy to come up with ideas that don't work.

The problem here is the damage such a thing would do to the validity of Ranked.

Say you average about 18 games out of 100 with an afk (pretty arbitrary, but it means easy math for me). Statistically speaking, 8 of those games will have the afk be on your team - you'll probably lose those. 10 of those games will have the afk be on the other team - you'll probably win those. If you have a 50/50 winrate in the other 82 matches, your total W/L will be 51/49 - meaning you'll tend to rise in rank.

Taking those same numbers and applying them to your system, we get 51/41 (where 8 are effectively ignored - no increase, no decrease). Which would warp the basic structure of Ranked - it would lead to a perpetual increase in LP/MMR for nearly every player. Which, in turn, would completely invalidate the very concept of matchmaking - and thus of ranking.

I think, however, that it might be interesting to see a system that ignores matches that have an AFK in promos - that is, if there's an afk in one of your promo games, it isn't counted towards your promo (though the MMR adjustment is still applied as normal). I think that might go a long way towards addressing the most valid concerns about them.

The biggest concern here is: how is it determined? This is the exact kind of behavior that's often difficult to recognize as toxic - which makes it a challenge to address.

So which situations does this apply in? How do we account for genuine confusion? What about poor (or nonexistant) communication from earlier flex picks? Also, should this only apply to the last-pick player?

I spoke on this in that thread, so I hope you don't mind if I quote myself:

I don't think it's necessarily a bad idea, but I do believe that the Mastery system is still too new to be a requirement for Ranked. That said, this may be interesting to see implemented during the preseason, to take full effect at the start of the 2016 season.

Additionally, I think it would be more appropriate to require only Mastery 2. I think it's a somewhat safer middle-ground, that keeps the barrier of entry low enough to not be daunting, but high enough to still be relevant.
