Criticism of Riot often falls on deaf ears...lets talk about Mass Effect Andromeda
I'm sure many of you have seen the terribly facial animations, and the fact that while men are relatively handsome, every woman looks ugly--its like some kind of sad pandering to social justice warriors who think that making women pretty is sexist, and we as men who make up the majority of the customers for the game, should accept homely and goofy looking women...because, ya know, its who they are a person that matters. Also, supposedly the writing and voice acting are pretty bad as well.
You can blame Bioware, or EA, take your pick. Internet says that many Bioware employees left during the development and/or the team that worked on the game was not really the same as others. And also many left, supposedly, after EA acquired Bioware. Or perhaps Bioware hired people with little experience because of who they knew or because of their social agenda.
However, this falls right into my theorem of what often happens--people and companies rise to their own level of incompetence. There is no excuse for a sub par product from Bioware. They had a huge budget and like 6 years. Plenty of money and time. What went wrong?
It comes down to leadership and, I firmly believe, people trying to hard to be original and make a statement, instead of just being honest. This is reason I hate how complex many of the new champions are. Annie, stuns ever 4th ability. Nasus 10-20% lifesteal....new champions....paragraphs to explain their passive, and several for their abilities. Its like designers are insecure about their position in the company or with their own abilities and focus so much and trying to make something creative. I read Kled or Illaoi's passive and I already don't want to bother with it. Consequently, I hardly see them in ranked. I am sure others feel the same way.
Beyond the champion designers, this goes to the balance team and higher leadership always trying to cram some vision down our throats of what the game should be. Nerfing, buffing items back and forth and champions. Making changes that no one asked for or wanted, like plants or removing solo-que, or ignoring us for years when we asked for a sandbox mode because Riot thought they knew better. Or simply nerfing champions into the ground and they are surprised when their win rate plummets...and then they just ignore them. As a big fuck you to their customers that liked playing that champion.
Its almost like some game companies don't understand that what the customers think is THE MOST IMPORTANT THING. Even worse, its almost like some them are contemptuous of us, the stupid masses, who don't understand their brilliant vision.
Mark Merrill and the rest may have started this company with the best intentions. But people are corruptible and imperfect. When you shoot down criticism of Riot that suggests maybe they aren't that smart or creative, or maybe they have become totally greedy, you are shooting down the fact that this happens all the time in many industries and basically saying that somehow you know that that isn't the case with Riot.
Bioware, a successful company that has made great products, delivered a sub-par product in many respects with ME:A. They had tons of money and time. Yet something went wrong, DESPITE THEIR SUCCESS AND EXPERIENCE.
Riot, a successful company that has made a lot less products than Bioware, delivered a reasonably good product...sometimes. They have tons of money and have had a lot of time. Yet often we see questionable changes and decisions. Its not a given that they know what they are doing or that they have the right people in the right positions.
I suspect that there is some seriously messed up mindsets at Riot and many people who are not the right people for the job. I don't mean people who work on sound, animation and programming etc. I mean the people who are the creatives. I would be very curious to know what their hiring process is like and what they look for in designers.
IF you are going to down vote, at least tell me why.
