Brand is super strong right now
He has an amazing team fight ult, crazy AOE burst, and insane DOT damage. His only downside is lack of mobility which is less of an issue now than it was in S4.

While he has ok AoE damage, other champs do his job better (Ziggs, Syndra, Xerath, etc). His DoT isn't actually that bad. It's only 8% of your max health. His Ultimate in completely random unless the previous targets hit here ablaze. There's a reason he's not played very often. And his immobility is makes him really weak. It's still a problem today. I'm guessing you fought a Brand who got fed. Try playing the champion. Honestly, he's really lackluster in comparison to other mages.
He's also my main. I'm well aware of his strength and weaknesses. But his combos are easily predictable, his stun is easily avoidable, and you can stop his ult from doing more damage by simply moving away from other targets. Know the champion and know how to fight the champion.
