Should I have a main role and a main champion?
I usually just select fill every game and pick a random champion that fits whatever role I get. Am I doing it wrong?

There is no doing it wrong or right when it comes to your main role man do what you wanna do.
do what you enjoy. i've been lv30 for years and i still practically main free week. i get bored of a champ if i play them too often, so even my favorites are only played once or twice in a row.
If that works for you, then by all means continue.
I don't think anyone you queue against will object if you do not main the champion you play.
