Hextech Crafting/Event Suggestions!
So it's been almost a year since Hextech Crafting went live, and there seems to be a lot of discussion about it every so often, positive and negative. I've had a few thoughts about improvements that might be cool to see in the future. As with any other aspect of the game, I'm sure Riot will be making changes to Hextech as time goes on, and I'd like to add my two cents is all.
Now to start off, this isn't a hate thread, and I don't mean to whine about drop-rates or RNG. Free stuff is free stuff, and League is undoubtedly better off for having hextech, in any form. This is a thread where I'd hope to talk about what we like about Hextech, what we don't, and what can be done to improve it.
So, the good things:
- Opportunity for "free" cosmetics and champions
- Cost efficient way to unlock content if you don't care about what you are getting
- "Gambling" minigame can be engrossing on its own
- Opportunity for ultimate skins and legacy skins
- Integration with events like Snowdown/Lunar Revel (not so much how it turned out, but the fact that the crafting CAN be a part of the event)
The bad:
- Very inaccessible to free players, slower than IP gains.
- RNG can make it feel like a massive waste of time/money (champion shards/blue essence/skins we don't want)
- Some players have too many/not enough keys/chests due to limited ways of acquiring them
- Hextech events are almost completely inaccessible to free players, and seem to have taken the place of actual "fun" events
Suggestions for improvement:
- Allow more, different opportunities for earning loot.
- Reward loot for good behavior; would it be more effective than punishing bad behavior?
- Allow higher degree of control over what we can craft. Key+Box and Shard+Essence are a bit dull
- Opportunities to earn extra "chests available" credits. Currently you can only earn ~55 chests/season if being optimal. There are over 130 champions. Key availability would obviously have to change if box availability does.
- Event boxes (e.g. revel envelopes) should be earned in place of standard boxes, or allow new ways to earn, in addition to purchasing them.
Some specific Ideas/examples:
- Combine a box with orange or blue essence. Orange boxes guarantee cosmetics, blue boxes guarantee champions.
- Boxes can randomly be upgraded to "Epic" or crafted by combining boxes with other items for additional or guaranteed better loot.
- Give event boxes a small chance to drop when you are in a premade with champions that are using that event's skins. Higher chance for more skins.
- Winstreaks increase chance for a key drop. Longer winstreaks, higher chance. Earning a fragment resets the chance.
- Create a small chance for loot to drop when honored by a non friend, clubmate, or party member. Higher chance the more honors.
- Allow accounts to level past 30. Similar to Destiny, the account remains at 30, but each "level" earned could reward a box+key. Summoner EXP and boosts become useful again.
