"We'll be rolling out a soft ranked reset at the start of the 2014 season and not the beginning of the preseason. With so much change being introduced in the preseason, we wanted to provide a competitive environment for players to adjust. While ranked games won’t have a huge impact on ranked placement during the 2014 season, they’ll still affect your skill level and where you begin ranked placement from, so keep playing hard! The League system itself will go through some changes over the course of the preseason as well, expect to hear more on that front sooner rather than later"

I understand that for this season, there will be a soft reset as well. I find this part confusing :

"they’ll still affect your skill level and where you begin ranked placement from, so keep playing hard"

So we're resetted and then based on how we do in the placement matches determines where you begin?

basically yes and your mmr also effects this.

If you have never played ranked before, then you enter placement matches with an initial MMR around Silver 4.

If you have played ranked before, then you enter placeent matches with an initial MMR somewhere between Silver 4 and your previous MMR.

Let's say you are Gold 5. If you stop playing now and never play again and you get reset for season 6, you will most likely place Bronze III-Silver III after playing your placements.

If you continue playing during preseason and reach Gold 1 and you get reset for season 6, you will most likely place Silver III - Gold V after playing your placements.
