Irelia or Gangplank

So, I'm fairly happy with my current roster, except that I'm missing a solid melee bruiser. Riven didn't do it for me, nor did any of the recent free to plays. The two champions that I've singled out are Irelia and Gangplank. I haven't actually seen an Irelia at all in s5, so i have no idea how good she is. Gangplank is....... interesting to me. If he gets ahead he wrecks, behind he's useless. A ton of people say he's really weak, but from the boards his fans just love playing him. Anyone have any insights on these 2 champions that could help decide?

ok... They are both fun. I enjoy both of them. The difference, Irelia is actually a strong pick. That is the difference. Gangplank is a weak champion. Despite how fun he is, you don't do more damage or tank more damage by having more fun. I would highly suggest going Irelia over GP.

That's the general feel that I've gotten but i find it odd that in seeing like 5 or 6 gangplanks, I've never seen her played once.

Irelia's early game is really weak. She's got a very strong kit and her mid game is perhaps one of the best for a melee champ, but to compensate for that, Riot made it difficult for her to farm or trade safely in the early game.

That's why you don't see her much. If an Irelia player can survive her early game without feeding, she's a great champion, but its hard to avoid getting wrecked early if the other team understands that slowing/stopping Irelia from farming is vital to limiting her. Her biggest power spike comes when/if she can finish Triforce, so if you can make that happen very late, you can take her out of the game.

I'm a Gangplank main and I love the champ but, were I you, I'd go for Irelia. GP is fun to play but he doesn't bring to a team what teams need. Irelia has hard CC, tankyness, mobility (a healthy kind, I'd say). GP, instead, lacks a definite identity and has strong backdraws whatever he tries to do. I'm looking forward to his upcoming rework, though :Q___
