FYI these visualizations are really neat (and a bit terrifying!) but remember they aren't representations of actual DDoS attacks. Rather, they're honeypots set up to detect this kind of activity and attempt to circumvent/mitigate it.

Source: internet, also former Microsoft trainer for Boeing.

(Edit: substituted the Wikipedia URL for a tinyurl version so it would actually link. Bug reported to the dudes who can fix it!)

OT, but I can't find anyone else to ask: Is there something wrong with the Riot API site? It's giving me a 500 err when I try to sign in :S

Lemme ask around!

Awesome thanks. I asked on reddit and there were others having the same issue.

You seemed to have unintentionally found a problem with linking URLs with parentheses in them.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honeypot_(computing) <-- doesn't like the right parentheses, so your link is broken.

I have failed to find a workaround for this.

You could use %29 in place of the ")" as in [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honeypot_(computing%29](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honeypot_(computing%29). I know it doesn't look great but it should work. :/

EDIT: imo this looks a bit better actually http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honeypot_%28computing%29

Nice workaround.

I was wondering how they were tracking all of this. I mean, the kind of permits required to do it correctly would be obscene, and probably wouldn't be granted to anyone outside of the government. Honeypots make alot of sense, as they don't need a wire tapping permit/whatever they are called around the globe, just watching the attack from the source.

Thanks for sharing that little tidbit. And of course for finding the bug in links! Double helpful post from red!

Well I just watched china rain hellfire down on the united states. Both terrifying and surprisingly pretty to watch, the first site does a pretty cool job with the visuals. Thanks for sharing!

116.10.191.164 Nanning , China It didn't last long but in 15 seconds they sent out 450 "attacks" on the united states.

that;s pretty crazy

Yeah, Can't wait till it's over so I can find out the peak traffic. Last one like this was around 1TB/s traffic at its height. It 1 shot an ISP before Riot even felt it.

Tahra2 votes

It took down Wow as well for anyone thinking it's because Riot is cheap -- I guarantee you Blizzard spends plenty to make sure they don't have to refund peoples money and they felt it just the same

so sad that every time a game becomes popular hackers and cheaters do everything to ruin it. I mean what's the point of getting diamond when all you did was cancelling games you would have lost?

So... they're doing multiple games? I noticed GW2 was having an issue last night/this morning and it was rumored to be a DDOS too.

Is there any affiliation? It seems odd that so many games are getting DDOS'd at similar times.

(Please, forgive my ignorance in the matter...)

EVE was DDOS yesterday as well.

So what happens when a DDOS gets so big it shuts down every online game?

You know it's bad when I posted this yesterday and it is still 100% relevent.

Brings me back to S1/2, when this happened all the time.

I may sound ignorant but wouldn't or couldn't those attack being sent from foreign countries be just like the middle man? One attack starts in the US and then to China then back to the designated target? Or is that a movie thing haha.

Pryotra1 votes

It's an interesting question. The answer is that while that could be the case, that sort of action would be tracked by the maps as well.

Honestly, these maps track raw traffic that appears malicious. It is most likely that these locations, when shown, are the locations of the machines involved in the attacks. The thing these maps don't show is ownership of these machines, or whether or not these machines have been compromised. It's likely that the machines are a part of a botnet.
