'' I got placed in X division after placements, why ?'' ( guide inside )

Here's a little explanation for all you lost sheep who don't understand how the reset work.

First: it's a soft reset, not a hard reset, so you won't be reset too far off from your current rank

  • NOTE FOR HIGHER ELOs: Highest rank achievable via placements is Platinum I

Ok, so now, you got placed lower than your former rank ( maybe by a whole division ) & you don't understand why ( I assume that's why you're reading this post ) ? Here's why, in a simple, dumb down explanation !

So how riot reset rank is they bring your rank closer to 1200 MMR ( elo ) with a soft reset FORMULA USED IN s1 TAKE WITH A GRAIN OF SALT: (x+1200)/2 = y X being your S5 rating + 1200, divided by 2, which will show your previous rating.

Ok, so now let's take me for example. I was plat IV last season right ? Let's say plat IV is 1600. So the formula would be if rounded up: (1600+1200)/2=1400. So I would start my season slightly below my plat IV ranking ( maybe like gold III ? ). Now, you win a LOT & lose a LOT for your first 10 placement matches, like 30. So I would be back to around gold 1 to plat V with 10 wins, but even with a fairly good score of 6-4, I might even drop some ranking and be placed gold IV or something.

IMPORTANT NOTE: KDA doesn't matter, all that matter is W/L

Ok, so now you're thinking '' But why ? I was gold V but placed silver V in my placements while going 6/4 '' ... the problem is your MMR ( elo which is hidden behind your ''division ranking'' ) was most likely bad, how do you know ? If you were winning below 20-25, it mean you were either in the average, or had a very bad MMR ( winning below 15, or even losing more than winning ).

So how so you fix this ? Next season, make sure to have a good MMR, you can check on op.gg an estimate to know if you need to improve your play or if you're doing good or average for your division. Also, if you had a negative W/L ratio ... well you're pretty much 100% sure you had a bad MMR for your division, so it should come as no surprise you ranked lower after your 10 placements.

Thanks for the read & hopefully you understood better how the season transition works now !

I started my ranked placement, just did 6 games for now, Won all of them. Even if i lose all 4 i belive i should end up AT LEAST in gold from the plat 5 i reached last season (but i belive my MMR was higher then plat 5)

I was about to do a PSA like this myself.

Blame Riot for not re-releasing that article on ranked reset from 2014(Was it?).

Season 5 article.

As usual, you'll have ten placement games to fight through before settling in to your tier and division, ready for the climb. But this time, they work a little differently: in previous seasons, placement games were way more impactful than regular season games. Challenger players could lose all ten games and end up in Silver during the 2014 placements, while Bronze players could go on lucky winning sprees and end up in Plat before getting their butts kicked repeatedly until they fell a few tiers. Neither of these are good experiences, so while this year’s placements are still important, they won’t cause established players to swing as far up or down because of good or bad luck. Your placement will still be heavily influenced by where you ended up last season. If you’ve never played ranked, then your form in your placements will be all that matters!

Finally, with the pretty substantial changes that preseason brought, we figured that everyone should have a fresh opportunity to rise to the top. Because of that, we’re again running a soft reset to player position with the start of the ranked season, meaning you’ll likely place lower than where you ended the previous season.

See that part?

ALREADY INCORRECT, Diamond V is the highest you can Achieve in placements.

All i can say is i was plat 5 80+ lp in, and after placement games I ended up being silver 1. I went 7-3 and my first 5 games were 4-1. I don't think anyone knows how mmr truly works. But all you have to do is get good and climb. It wouldn't be climbing if you were put at the highest rank you could achieve last season.

ok smartguy, nice post but can you explain this, i read a post about a guy on the euw servers he won 10/10 of his placement matches and got bronze 5. :)

why not have the top rank as diamond 1 so that challengers are closer to their actual rank. some people put a lot of effort in it and its a really long way when you're vsing other challengers, not like its challenger v bronze

I was in gold4 and lost all ten of my placement matches, ending up in Silver 5.

Someone I was playing with was Plat5 and went 4-6 and was demoted to Bronze I.

mmr is a funny thing. I know how it works, but it's still so mysterious watching it happen.

If you were winning below 20-25, it mean you were either in the average, or had a very bad MMR ( winning below 15, or even losing more than winning ).

This is where i need some help I am currently 5-0 in my placements all very good games and i earned around 20-25 LP per game last season In silver 3. I myself have decided to wait until we have a challenger league filled up again. But my brother who just did his placements had the same LP gain in Bronze 2 and went 7-3 in placements now he is Bronze 5 I don't really think that should be happening then seeing as he both has a good LP gain and also did pretty good in his placements. now judging by the whole soft reset thing if we start calculating. And of course you told me to take it with a grain of salt but just for showing that something might actually be wrong.

X= 1000(It was somewhere around here)

(1000+1200)/2=1100 This is already higher than it should be so next his placements came up he would win and lose around 30 per match. 7x30=210 3x30=90 1100+210-90=1220

This is where things pretty much get twisted up because the soft reset might screw it up or something and it could be 200 lower but if we were to look at his current op.gg rating it says his mmr is 758 now i could believe that there is a difference from the 1220 but i don't think it should be almost 500 missing. On lolking he now has 800 LKS where he used to have around 1050 for some time. I am not complaining but the explanation given just doesn't add up for me. So either you made an error or Riot made it.

8-2, went from diamond 4 to plat 2. Could be worse I guess.
